The atmosphere the next morning seemed to glow with tension.
The usually lively campus felt different. Footsteps echoed across the polished tile floors as students moved through the hallways in pairs and groups. Conversations drifted through the air like invisible currents, merging into a single topic that had completely taken over the school.
The ranking system.
Students from different departments walked together like flocks of birds, exchanging theories, predictions, and worries.
"This ranking system has practically turned the whole school upside down," one student said as she leaned against a locker beside a large wall clock.
Her friend glanced up at the clock.
"What time will the rankings be revealed?"
"I don't know. Why?"
The girl shrugged.
"I just can't wait to find out."
"Don't get your hopes up."
"Why not?"
"The top rankers will probably take the first position again."
The girl sighed.
"Yeah... you're probably right."
The discussion continued as students headed toward their classes and dormitories. Everywhere Adrian looked, people were talking about the same thing.
Who would rise?
Who would fall?
Who would remain at the top?
The excitement was impossible to ignore.
Then suddenly, the corridor grew quieter.
Not completely silent.
Just quieter.
Heads turned.
Conversations lowered.
Footsteps slowed.
Kai Morrison and Damon had entered the hallway.
The silence wasn't born from fear.
At least, not entirely.
It was something else.
Kai's presence carried a strange weight.
For many students, he represented everything the ranking system stood for.
Success.
Recognition.
Victory.
The whispers soon returned.
"Why does he always come first?"
"I know he's smart, but he's not the only smart person in this school."
"Maybe we're missing something."
"Or maybe he's just that good."
The opinions were always divided.
Some admired him.
Some envied him.
Some simply couldn't understand him.
Kai paid no attention to any of it.
He walked forward as though the entire corridor belonged to him.
Damon followed closely behind.
Neither of them said a word.
Yet somehow, they still became the center of attention.
---
Lucas was already inside the dormitory when Adrian returned.
His roommate was sitting on his bed, scrolling through his phone with the expression of someone desperately searching for entertainment.
The moment he noticed Adrian entering, he sat upright.
"What's up, man?"
"Nothing much," Adrian replied.
Lucas narrowed his eyes.
"You look tired."
"Do I?"
"Yeah."
Adrian placed his bag on a chair.
"You slept before I came back last night."
"Of course I did."
Lucas stretched lazily.
"Unlike some people, I actually enjoy sleeping."
Adrian laughed.
"You slept because you ran out of data."
"You must be insane."
Lucas threw a pillow at him.
Adrian dodged it easily.
"Seriously though," Lucas continued, "where were you?"
"I was busy."
"With?"
"Something important."
"Hmmm."
Lucas stared at him suspiciously.
Adrian stared back.
Neither moved.
Finally, Lucas sighed.
"Fine. Let's talk about the real issue."
"What issue?"
"The rankings."
Adrian immediately groaned.
"Oh no."
"Oh yes."
"Please, Mister Lucas."
"Don't start."
"Can we talk about literally anything else?"
"I knew you would say that."
Lucas grinned.
"But let's be honest. You've got a pretty good partner."
Adrian shook his head.
"You're impossible."
"Thank you."
"That wasn't a compliment."
Lucas laughed loudly.
"Anyway, forget the rankings."
"Good."
"Tell me what kept you out so late."
Adrian hesitated.
Then he walked over to his cupboard and pulled out a sheet of paper.
"I was in the art studio."
Lucas grabbed the paper immediately.
His eyes widened.
"Whoa."
"What?"
"This is actually good."
"Actually?"
"Okay, very good."
A smile appeared on Adrian's face.
"Not bad."
"Not bad?" Lucas repeated dramatically. "You're ridiculously talented."
Adrian simply shrugged.
The compliment felt nice.
But for some reason, his thoughts drifted elsewhere.
Toward the rankings.
Toward the partnership.
Toward Selene.
---
Selene was lying on her bed with a novel resting against her knees when Clara entered the room.
The door clicked shut behind her.
"What are you reading?"
"A novel."
Clara raised an eyebrow.
"With no title?"
Selene rolled her eyes.
"Love Beneath the Silent Water."
"Interesting."
Clara placed a few books on her desk.
"Nice title."
Selene glanced at her.
"Why are you looking at me like that?"
"Because I didn't know you liked romance."
"It's not about the romance."
"Of course it isn't."
"It's about the action."
Clara laughed softly.
"Whatever helps you sleep at night."
Selene shook her head.
"You're annoying."
"Thank you."
A brief silence followed.
Then Clara sat down.
"I'm surprised."
"About what?"
"You don't seem worried about the rankings."
Selene immediately closed her book.
"Why does everyone keep talking about them?"
"Because they're important."
"I don't think so."
Clara tilted her head.
"No?"
"I didn't come to this university because of rankings."
"Then why did you come?"
"To study Business Administration."
"Exactly."
Selene frowned.
Clara smiled.
"You need to learn the difference between a task and a purpose."
Selene remained silent.
The words lingered.
Eventually she changed the topic.
"So where have you been?"
"The library."
"Of course."
Clara laughed.
"What does that mean?"
"It means you probably found another interesting book."
"I did."
"Thought so."
"I'll lend it to you when I'm done."
Selene smiled.
"I don't think I need more books."
"No?"
"I need more practical experience."
"Then today's your lucky day."
Selene looked out the window.
Somewhere deep down, she knew Clara was right.
Whether she liked it or not...
Today's rankings mattered.
The classroom was unusually quiet that morning.
Normally, conversations would fill the room before a lecture began, but today was different. The students sat in their seats, their minds occupied by a single thought.
The rankings.
Some tapped their pens against their desks.
Others stared blankly at their notebooks.
A few whispered among themselves, but even those conversations died quickly.
The anticipation was impossible to ignore.
A few minutes later, Mrs. Elena entered the classroom.
She wasn't rushing, despite being slightly later than usual.
As always, she carried herself with calm confidence.
Her bright smile immediately caught the students' attention.
"Good morning, students."
The class replied in unison.
"Good morning, ma."
Mrs. Elena placed her lesson book on the desk.
"I hope everyone is prepared for today's ranking revelation."
A few nervous chuckles spread across the room.
"Because I can assure you that today will be very interesting."
She paused.
"At least for those who worked hard."
A few students exchanged uneasy glances.
"As for the rest..." she continued with a playful smile. "Well, they should prepare themselves for whatever results they receive."
The room became silent once more.
Mrs. Elena walked toward the whiteboard and picked up a marker.
"Many of you have been discussing the ranking system, but I wonder how many of you actually understand it."
She turned and wrote three words on the board:
Analysis
Teamwork
Field Performance
The marker clicked as she placed it down.
"These are the three pillars of the Westbridge Performance Index."
The students immediately paid attention.
"Your rank is not determined by intelligence alone."
She pointed toward the first word.
"Analysis measures how well you understand and evaluate problems."
Then she pointed toward the second.
"Teamwork measures how effectively you cooperate with your assigned partner."
Finally, she pointed toward the third.
"And Field Performance measures how well you apply your knowledge in practical situations."
She folded her arms.
"Many students believe academic brilliance alone guarantees success."
Her gaze swept across the classroom.
"They are wrong."
The room remained silent.
"At Westbridge, individual talent matters."
She paused.
"But partnership matters even more."
Those words seemed to linger in the air.
"Your partner can influence your success..."
She looked around the room.
"...or your failure."
This time nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Even Selene found herself paying closer attention.
"Any questions?" Mrs. Elena asked.
The room remained quiet.
Then Selene slowly stood up.
"Excuse me, ma."
"Yes, Selene?"
"Is the ranking system really necessary?"
Several students immediately turned toward her.
Mrs. Elena smiled.
"An interesting question."
She began walking slowly across the room.
"The ranking system exists because the real world measures performance."
Nobody interrupted her.
"Businesses are measured."
"Employees are measured."
"Leaders are measured."
"Results are measured."
She stopped.
"And so are you."
Selene remained standing.
"Rankings are not designed to discourage you."
"They are designed to reveal where you stand."
Before she could continue, a loud electronic tone echoed through the building.
The Ranking Announcement Signal.
The entire class immediately reacted.
Mrs. Elena smiled.
"Looks like your answer will have to wait."
A few students laughed nervously.
She picked up her lesson book.
"Meet me in my office later if you'd like to discuss it further."
Then she headed toward the door.
"Now go."
"Your rankings are waiting."
Within minutes, students were flooding toward the Grand Atrium.
The atmosphere felt completely different from earlier.
Excitement.
Curiosity.
Anxiety.
The emotions mixed together into something powerful.
Groups of students walked side by side toward the university's central hall.
Adrian watched them carefully.
Everyone looked nervous.
Everyone except Kai.
Kai walked through the crowd as though nothing important was happening.
As though the rankings already belonged to him.
Adrian sighed quietly.
Then another voice interrupted his thoughts.
"Hello."
He turned.
Selene stood beside him.
For a brief second, he looked surprised.
"Oops. Selene."
A faint smile appeared on her face.
"Did I startle you?"
"No."
"You almost stammered."
"I did not."
"You did."
Adrian shook his head.
"Let's just go."
Together, they joined the crowd heading toward the Grand Atrium.
The Grand Atrium was packed.
Hundreds of students filled the massive hall.
Above them hung the gigantic digital board that controlled every student's attention.
Nobody was interested in talking anymore.
Every eye was fixed upward.
Waiting.
The board suddenly flickered.
The lights flashed once.
Twice.
Then words appeared across the screen.
WELCOME TO THIS WEEK'S WESTBRIDGE PERFORMANCE INDEX UPDATE
A ripple of excitement spread through the crowd.
The rankings began loading.
Names appeared one after another.
Students watched anxiously as partnerships filled the screen.
Some celebrated.
Some groaned.
Others simply stared.
The numbers continued changing.
The tension increased.
Then the fifth position appeared.
A collective murmur spread through the atrium.
RANK 5
ADRIAN VALE & SELENE HART
For a moment, neither of them reacted.
Then applause broke out from nearby students.
Some were impressed.
Others looked surprised.
Moving from twelfth place to fifth place in a single evaluation was no small achievement.
Adrian smiled.
To him, it felt like progress.
Real progress.
Selene stared at the board.
She wasn't angry.
She wasn't disappointed.
But she wasn't satisfied either.
Fifth place.
Better than twelfth.
Yet still far from first.
She folded her arms quietly.
Adrian noticed.
"We improved."
She nodded.
"We did."
The rankings continued.
One by one, the remaining names appeared.
Finally, the number everyone expected arrived.
RANK 1
KAI MORRISON & ISABELLE CLARK
No one looked surprised.
The crowd erupted into whispers.
Kai remained calm.
Almost bored.
As though first place was simply where he belonged.
Isabelle smiled proudly beside him.
Adrian looked toward Kai briefly.
Kai seemed completely unfazed by the announcement.
For a second, their eyes met.
Then Kai looked away.
The students eventually returned to their classrooms.
The excitement of the rankings still buzzed through the air.
Mrs. Elena entered shortly afterward.
"Now that the rankings have been revealed, it is time for your next evaluation."
The room immediately became attentive.
"This time, observation alone will not be enough."
She wrote a new heading on the board.
BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT CHALLENGE
A few students exchanged curious looks.
Mrs. Elena continued.
"Each team must select a struggling business."
She wrote:
Identify weaknesses
Propose solutions
Present findings
"You are no longer observers."
She turned toward the class.
"You are problem-solvers."
The room became serious.
"Your recommendations must be practical."
"They must be realistic."
"And most importantly..."
Her voice hardened slightly.
"They must work."
The challenge suddenly felt much bigger than anyone expected.
"Do I make myself clear?"
"Yes, ma!" the class answered.
Mrs. Elena nodded.
"Good."
Then she left the room.
The classroom immediately exploded into discussion.
Some students looked excited.
Others looked terrified.
"This task is impossible."
"No, it isn't."
"What if the business owner rejects us?"
"What if our solutions fail?"
The complaints continued.
Then another voice interrupted them.
Kai.
The room instantly quieted.
He stood near the doorway.
His expression remained calm.
"Interesting."
Nobody spoke.
Kai glanced around the room.
"The rankings don't lie."
His eyes briefly settled on Selene.
Then he walked away.
Damon followed behind him.
The message was clear.
Kai still believed they weren't good enough.
A short while later, Selene left the building and entered the courtyard.
She found Adrian sitting beneath a tree.
Sketchbook in hand.
"Hello."
Adrian looked up.
"Oh."
A smile appeared on his face.
"Hey."
"You seem busy."
"Not really."
Selene sat nearby.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Adrian finally broke the silence.
"You're frustrated."
Selene sighed.
"Is it that obvious?"
"A little."
She looked away.
"We worked hard."
"We did."
"And we're still not first."
Adrian chuckled softly.
"Selene."
"What?"
"We moved from twelfth to fifth."
She remained silent.
"That's progress."
"I know."
"Then why are you acting like we failed?"
She didn't answer immediately.
Eventually she spoke.
"I just think we should be doing better."
Adrian nodded.
"Maybe."
She looked at him.
"Maybe?"
"Or maybe we're exactly where we're supposed to be."
Selene frowned.
"I don't believe in that."
"I know."
A small smile appeared on Adrian's face.
"But I do believe we'll keep improving."
The tension in Selene's expression softened.
Only slightly.
"We'll need to work harder."
"Definitely."
"We'll need better planning."
"Probably."
"And more effort."
"Absolutely."
Adrian closed his sketchbook.
"But the right kind of effort."
For the first time, they weren't arguing.
They weren't competing.
They weren't trying to prove each other wrong.
For the first time, they were thinking like a team.
Not perfectly.
But genuinely.
As they walked back toward their dormitories, neither spoke.
The ranking board had judged them.
Now it was their turn to answer.
