Chapter 1 - Chapter One: Welcome to Aurikon

OPTIMUM LAKE ESTATE

Mr. Anderson Woods, head of the Security and Defense Department, sat comfortably on a white leather chair, fingers moving swiftly across the keyboard as lines of coded data flashed across his customized PC screen.

The room was quiet except for the steady tapping of keys. So deeply absorbed in his work, he didn't notice when his daughter descended the staircase.

Kacy Woods, sixteen and full of life, made her way down with light steps. She was dressed in a crisp white blouse tucked neatly into a blue pleated skirt, her black knee-high socks completing the uniform of Aurikon High School. A soft smile spread across her face as her eyes fell on her father.

"I'm off to school, Daddy," she called, her voice bright as she moved toward the door.

Anderson paused, glancing up just long enough to meet her eyes. A faint smile tugged at his lips.

"Bye, dumpling."

No matter how demanding his work became, he always found a moment for Kacy.

Mom, I'll be fine. I promise."

The young boy stood in his neatly pressed uniform, trying to steady his voice as he faced the older woman seated on the edge of his bed.

Tears streamed down her face, her hands trembling slightly as she clutched a handkerchief.

"I know you will be, it's just…" she began, her voice breaking. "You're going back to that life… the one we left five years ago. I'm scared for you."

He stepped closer, his expression softening.

"Mom… I'll be alright. Besides, I'm not the only one. Ethan got the scholarship too. We'll be back before you even realize we're gone."

The words were barely out of his mouth when a familiar voice echoed from outside, calling his name.

" Kaiden!!

It was Ethan, his best friend.

Kaiden turned to his mother and smiled, "Love you mama, always", he declared as he embraced her and walked out.

"Hey Kai, I could barely sleep last night! we are officially student of Aurikon academy"

Kaiden smirked

" Yes...Yes we are"

"Easy for you to say," Colton muttered, eyes fixed ahead as they moved with the stream of students.

The corridor opened into a vast hall, its ceiling stretching high above them, light spilling in through tall windows and breaking across rows of seated students. Voices settled into a low hum as the newcomers were guided into place.

At the front, a man stood at the lectern, hands resting lightly on either side. His voice carried without effort.

"…I keep telling new students that Aurikon," he said, letting the word roll through the hall, "derived from Latin words symbolizing luxury, excellence, and nobility, stands as a standard of greatness. Here, we expect nothing short of distinction."

He paused, gaze sweeping across the room.

"Starting today, you are all ambassadors of Aurikon Academy. Carry its name with pride, and strive to become the very best version of yourselves."

A wave of applause rose and fell like a single breath.

Kaiden leaned back slightly in his seat, fingers adjusting the strap of his bag where it rested against his shoulder. Around him, students shifted, some straightening, others glancing sideways as lecturers stepped forward one after another.

Names began to echo through the hall. Papers were lifted. Groups broke and reformed in quiet motion.

"Fancy," Colton whispered, eyes tracking the movement across the stage, then the room. His hand tightened briefly on the edge of his seat before releasing. "I'm nervous."

Kaiden's gaze stayed forward as another list was read out.

"Do you really think we can do this?" Colton leaned just enough for the words to land between them.

Kaiden stood as their group was called, slipping the strap of his bag higher on his shoulder before stepping into the aisle.

"Of course," he said without looking back. His voice stayed even. "Just stay sharp. No drifting."

Colton pushed himself up a moment later, falling into step beside him as they moved with the group.

The noise of the hall faded behind them as they crossed into the corridor, the first signs of a schedule already forming ahead of them in scattered paper sheets and pointing hands.
