Chapter 12 - Choolwe's Choice

At sixteen, Choolwe had grown into a bright and confident young woman.

She inherited her father's patience and her mother's determination.

She also attracted attention.

One boy in particular, Brian, seemed interested in her. He was popular, athletic, and charming. Many girls admired him.

At first, Choolwe enjoyed the attention.

Then she noticed something.

Brian behaved differently depending on who was watching.

In public he was respectful.

In private he was demanding.

He became upset when she spent time with friends.

He wanted constant access to her phone.

He treated her boundaries as obstacles rather than decisions.

One evening, Choolwe sat with her mother and explained her confusion.

"He says he loves me," she said. "But sometimes he makes me feel guilty for saying no."

Chumuka listened carefully.

Then she asked, "Does his love bring peace or pressure?"

The question hung in the air.

Choolwe thought for a long time.

"Pressure," she admitted.

Chumuka smiled sadly.

"When someone truly values you, they do not punish you for having boundaries."

The words sounded familiar.

Because years earlier, another young woman had needed to hear exactly the same lesson.

The next week, Choolwe ended the relationship.

It hurt.

She cried.

She questioned herself.

But she also felt free.

And for the first time she understood why her mother had repeated the same wisdom throughout her life.

Some lessons must be learned personally before they become part of who we are.
