Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: The City Beneath the City

Rain continued falling outside the warehouse.

The cold drops slid down shattered glass and rusted steel while the city above slept in complete ignorance.

But inside the ruined building, Arjun stood motionless.

Kael's words still echoed inside his mind.

"They finally know your name."

Arjun looked at the blue system screen still floating before him.

Title Acquired: The One Who Returned

Effects:

Hidden world recognition increased Shadow affinity increased Danger increased

Arjun stared at the last line.

Danger increased.

He gave a dry laugh.

"Of course it did."

Kael remained near the entrance, arms folded.

"That title hasn't appeared in centuries."

Arjun looked up.

"You keep saying things like that as if they're supposed to comfort me."

Kael's expression didn't change.

"They aren't."

Arjun dismissed the system window with a flick of his hand.

The blue light vanished, but the uneasy pressure in the room remained.

He could still feel it.

The city itself seemed different now.

As if invisible eyes had turned toward him.

Watching.

Waiting.

Judging.

Arjun clenched his hand.

The black mark beneath his skin pulsed once.

Not painfully.

Almost like it was awake.

And listening.

No More Hiding

Kael pushed away from the wall.

"You can't stay here anymore."

Arjun raised an eyebrow.

"In my own apartment?"

Kael looked around the warehouse.

"No."

Then he looked at Arjun.

"In your old life."

Silence filled the room.

Arjun didn't answer immediately.

Because deep down—

he already knew Kael was right.

The moment the hunters found him, everything had changed.

There was no going back to normal.

No pretending he could still live as the man he had been before.

That man was already dead.

The city just hadn't noticed yet.

Arjun exhaled slowly.

"And where exactly am I supposed to go?"

Kael's golden eyes met his.

"Below."

Arjun frowned.

"The subway?"

Kael shook his head.

"No."

He pointed downward.

"Deeper."

The shadows around Arjun moved again.

A cold sensation crawled across his spine.

"You mean the hidden world."

Kael nodded.

"The place where the awakened live."

"The place where the factions rule."

"The place where your enemies are already waiting."

Arjun gave him a long look.

"That sounds inviting."

Kael almost smiled.

"It's not."

Then his face turned serious again.

"But if you stay up here…"

He glanced toward the city.

"…they'll use everyone around you."

Arjun thought of Rohan.

Of Nisha.

Of ordinary people walking home without knowing monsters were already standing beside them.

And for the first time—

he understood.

The hidden world wouldn't just attack him.

It would destroy everything near him first.

Because that was easier.

That thought made his expression colder.

"When do we leave?"

Kael answered instantly.

"Now."

The Descent

Kael led him to an old service tunnel beneath the industrial district.

The entrance was hidden behind a rusted maintenance gate that looked abandoned for decades.

No lights.

No signs.

Just darkness.

Arjun stared at it.

"This is the way in?"

Kael pulled a small black coin from his pocket.

Ancient symbols were carved into its surface.

He pressed it against the metal door.

The gate shuddered.

Then slowly opened on its own.

A wave of cold air rushed out.

Arjun frowned.

"That's convenient."

Kael stepped inside.

"That's not convenience."

He glanced back.

"It's permission."

Arjun followed.

The gate closed behind them.

The darkness swallowed the sound of the city instantly.

The tunnel stretched downward in a spiral.

Stone walls.

Ancient carvings.

Black lanterns burning with pale blue fire.

The deeper they walked—

the less it felt like Earth.

Arjun ran his fingers along the wall.

The stone wasn't concrete.

It was older.

Far older.

"Who built this?"

Kael answered without turning.

"No one knows."

Arjun kept walking.

The mark in his hand grew warmer with every step.

Almost like it recognized the place.

That feeling bothered him.

Because it felt less like entering somewhere new—

and more like returning somewhere old.

The Hidden City

After nearly twenty minutes, the tunnel opened.

Arjun stepped forward—

and stopped.

Because beneath Mumbai—

there was another city.

A massive underground world spread before him.

Stone bridges crossed over deep black water.

Ancient towers rose toward a cavern ceiling covered in glowing crystal veins.

Markets lined narrow streets.

Dark cloaked figures moved through crowded alleys.

Some looked human.

Some did not.

Red eyes.

Silver skin.

Horns.

Shadows moving like living creatures around their owners.

And none of them looked surprised to exist.

Arjun stared in silence.

"…What the hell."

Kael stood beside him.

"Welcome to Noctis."

Arjun slowly looked around.

The place was alive.

Shops sold glowing weapons.

Strange creatures whispered from cages.

Merchants traded objects that seemed to breathe.

The entire underground city pulsed with hidden power.

And worst of all—

the moment Arjun stepped onto the stone platform—

people noticed.

One by one, heads turned.

A woman with black eyes stopped walking.

A masked child froze mid-step.

A merchant dropped a glass vial.

Then whispers began spreading through the crowd.

Fast.

Like fire.

Kael's expression darkened.

"…Too late."

Arjun frowned.

"What?"

Kael looked at him.

"They can feel your mark."

The whispers spread.

Arjun could hear fragments.

"Is it true?"

"The shadow…"

"The king…"

"No…"

"It can't be…"

Arjun's jaw tightened.

"Subtle."

Kael muttered,

"You lost subtle three fights ago."

Then the crowd suddenly split.

Silence spread.

Someone important was approaching.

A tall woman in crimson armor walked forward.

Long white hair.

A sword at her side.

Golden eyes.

And authority in every step.

She stopped a few feet away.

Her gaze went straight to Arjun's hand.

Then to Kael.

"You brought him here."

Kael's voice remained calm.

"He was already coming."

The woman ignored him.

Her eyes stayed on Arjun.

Then she smiled faintly.

Not warm.

Not friendly.

Interested.

"So."

She said softly.

"The rumors were true."

Arjun folded his arms.

"People keep saying that."

The woman's smile widened slightly.

"And you keep surviving."

Kael sighed.

"Arjun—this is Lyra."

The woman bowed her head just enough.

Commander of the eastern ward.

One of the strongest awakened in Noctis.

Arjun looked unimpressed.

"Should I be concerned?"

Lyra's golden eyes flashed.

"Yes."

Arjun almost smiled.

Finally.

Someone honest.

The Offer

Lyra stepped closer.

"You've caused chaos in less than forty-eight hours."

Arjun shrugged.

"I've had a busy week."

For the first time—

Lyra laughed.

A short quiet sound.

Then she became serious.

"The factions already know."

Arjun asked,

"And?"

Lyra's voice turned cold.

"And half of them want your loyalty."

She paused.

"The other half want your corpse."

Arjun nodded.

"That sounds familiar too."

Lyra looked directly into his eyes.

"I came to give you a choice."

Kael's expression changed slightly.

Arjun noticed.

"What choice?"

Lyra answered simply.

"Join us."

Silence.

Kael looked at her.

"You came fast."

Lyra didn't look away from Arjun.

"We don't get second chances when legends wake up."

Arjun studied her.

"And if I say no?"

Lyra's answer came without hesitation.

"Then someone else will ask."

She leaned closer.

"And they won't ask politely."

The crowd remained silent around them.

Everyone watching.

Waiting.

Arjun could feel it.

This was bigger than him now.

Much bigger.

He had stepped into a world already preparing for war.

And somehow—

he was standing in the center of it.

Lyra extended her hand.

"Come with me."

Arjun stared at it.

Then at Kael.

Then at the endless city beneath the city.

A world of monsters.

Power.

Secrets.

And enemies.

The old Arjun would have run.

The new Arjun smiled.

Because for the first time—

he wasn't afraid of the darkness.

He wanted to see how deep it went.

And somewhere inside him—

the voice whispered again.

Soft.

Almost pleased.

"Good."

Arjun slowly lifted his hand.

And took hers.
