Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 ~Snake~

At the entrance—a figure stood waiting in the center, dressed elegantly—far more deliberately than as occasion required. The Third Princess wore a layered silk ruqun of soft lilac and pale rose, the colors chosen not for restraint, but for attention. The fabric shimmered faintly under the light, woven with delicate silver-threaded patterns that caught the eye with every small movement.

Her outer robe was lighter, almost translucent, yet embroidered heavily along the sleeves and hem with blooming peonies—each stitch intricate, each detail meant to be noticed. Around her waist, a wide silk sash was tied perfectly, adorned with a carved jade ornament that rested at her side. It was not subtle. It was meant to be seen. Her hair was styled higher than customary for a simple visit, pinned up in an elaborate arrangement of loops and folds. Golden hairpins adorned with small dangling pearls framed her face, swaying softly whenever she shifted her weight. A single phoenix-shaped ornament rested near the crown of her head—

Not quite appropriate for her rank. But not openly forbidden either, just enough to suggest ambition, just enough to invite attention. Her face was carefully compose, her expression gentle at first glance—yet her eyes carried a faint sharpness, watching everything, measuring everything.

And still—she stood at the threshold, not stepping inside, not retreating either, her posture straight, her chin slightly raised, as if unwilling to lower herself—yet not bold enough to step forward. Wang Xinyi leaned slightly towards Yu Shayue as they approached the third princess. "…Look at her," she murmured softly. "Not inside. Not outside." Her gaze moved deliberately from the hair ornaments to the embroidered sleeves, then to the jade at her waist. A faint smile tugged at her lips. "…And dressed as if she's attending a spring banquet instead of paying a visit…She really chose a perfect place to stand…Did she come here to speak… or to be admired?"

Shayue said nothing. But her gaze moved once—slowly, calmly—taking in every detail, the silk, the ornaments, the deliberate excess. Her eyes stilled slightly. Because she understood clearly, this was not care carelessness. This was an intention, not a visit, but a display. It was a move, and beneath it—something quieter and more deliberate, a challenge.

As they approached, the Third Princess finally lifted her gaze fully, her expression softening into a gentle smile—carefully measured, perfectly timed. "Greeting Elder Sister," Yu Shiyi greeted, her voice light and pleasant, carrying just enough warmth to seem sincere. She inclined her head gracefully, her sleeves falling in delicate folds. "It has been some time since I last visited your mansion…" After a small pause, her eyes flickering briefly across Shayue's courtyard behind her, "I was worried I might be disturbing your peace." Her tone remained gentle, considerate, yet beneath it—something else lingered.

A faint smile touched her lips again. "I heard the news this morning," she continued, her gaze settling back onto Yu Shayue. "That Elder Sister will soon leave the palace…" Her voice softened slightly. "…to marry into the Longlin Empire." A brief pause followed—just enough to seem thoughtful. "…It must have come rather suddenly." Her eyes lowered, than lifted again, as if with quiet sympathy. "I could not help but feel… concerned for Elder Sister." The words sounded kind, but the meaning behind them was clear. 'sudden, unexpected and out of your control.'

Before the air could settle—Wang Xinyi shifted slightly, clearly catching the undertone. A brief moment, she simply looked at her, her smile remained. But something in her eyes shifted—faintly amused and faintly unimpressed. "…The news travels remarkably fast," she said lightly. She slightly tilted her head. "as expected of the inner palace." Her tone was polite, almost admiring. A brief pause, "…To reach concern so quickly," she added with a soft smile, "…it must have been really quite urgent."

The words lingered—sweet on the surface, sharp. Shiyi's expression did not change. But her fingers tightened slightly within her sleeve. Her gaze shifted slightly—then paused, as if just noticing someone beside Shayue. "Oh…" she said lightly, as though surprised. "I did not realize Lady Xinyi was also here." Her tone remained polite, but the implication was clear—'You were not worth noticing at first.'

Wang Xinyi smiled instantly, bright, pleasant and completely composed. "Third Princess is too kind," she replied smoothly, inclining her head just enough to remain proper. "It is only natural for Your Highness to notice first, what is… most important." Faint pause followed, but her smile did not fade. "I would not dare take offense at being overlooked." For a brief moment—the air shifted. Shiyi's smile was held, but her eyes sharpened just slightly. "I see," she said gently, "Lady Xinyi truly understands propriety." She said with an unnoticeable but noticeable enough for Shayue and Xinyi, little smirk on her face "…Though it is rare to see someone so… comfortable within another's residence." Xinyi's fingers tightened slightly with her sleeve, just for a moment, her smile, however remained flawless. "…Her Highness is generous, a place becomes comfortable when one is welcomed properly." She replied lightly but softly, a faint tilt of her head.

"…Some visit, however, seem to rely more on timing than invitation." The words had landed, Shiyi's lashes lowered slightly. Shayue stood between them, watching with silent and calm, Xinyi's gaze flicked towards Yu Shayue for a brief second—and in that moment—a conversation passed without words.

'Should I kill her? It would be good chance to remove a snake from your family, wouldn't it?'

Shayue's expression did not change, not even slightly, but her eyes shifted once—cool and unmoved.

'If you wish to be imprisoned for the rest of your life, you may proceed.' A faint pause

'Otherwise… leave it to me.'

Xinyi's lips pressed together just slightly—holding back a smile. She stepped back half a pace, as if conceding the stage. Shayue stood still, her expression unchanged and she did not respond immediately, she did not react, her gaze rested calmly on Shiyi, neither cold nor warm—simply steady, then Shayue finally spoke—"You came early." Her voice was even and unhurried. Shiyi blinked her eyes—just slightly. Shayue's gaze shifted once, briefly—taking in the elaborate attire, the ornaments, the deliberate care, then returned to her face.

"For something that concerns me so greatly," Shayue continued calmly, "…you seemed to have had enough time to prepare." A faint stillness entered the air. Xinyi lowered her head slightly, hiding the smile now clearly forming. Shiyi's expression held—but something beneath it flickered. "You need not trouble yourself over my guests," Shayue added, her tone still composed. "Those who are welcomed… need no introduction." Her gaze remained steady. "As for those who arrive unannounced… it is only natural they must first announce themselves." The words were light but precise. Xinyi's shoulders relaxed slightly, clearly satisfied.

But Shayue did not stop there, she said continuing with a calm and steady gaze. "You do not need to worry too much in this matter, third princess," she added, her tone unchanged, composed and clear, no relationship only title. "This matter was not decided in haste." a slight pause then she said without any hesitation, "I accepted it." The words fell simply, but heavily. Not was sent, not was arranged, but accepted.

Shiyi's fingers tightened within her sleeve, though her smile remained, she couldn't control her anger, the insult she just got, Shayue's gaze remained steady, she spoke again. "So your concern," she finished quietly, "…is unnecessary." Silence followed, not loud, not tense but with something undeniable.

Xinyi finally let out a soft breath, she glanced at Shayue—and for a brief moment, her expression softened. Not teasing, not playful, but something else. Almost…like a proud younger sister and as if watching someone who needed no defense—because she had already won the conversation. She spoke, her voice light again—"…Third Princess truly came all this way just to worry?" A small pause, "…How thoughtful." The sweetness in her tone—did not quiet reach her eyes.

After Xinyi's remarks, Yu Shiyi fell quiet for a brief seconds, her smile did not flicker, her posture remaining perfect. But something beneath it something shifted—subtly, almost imperceptibly, and yet—Yu Shayue noticed.
