Chapter 27 - CHAPTER 26: THE GALA OF SHADOWS

The "Gala of the Silver Fox" was the social event of the decade. Every billionaire, politician, and predator in the city was gathered under the crystal chandeliers of the Grand Opera House. The air was thick with the scent of lilies and expensive perfume, but to me, it felt like the smell of a funeral.

Kai stood behind me in our private suite at the venue, his fingers steady as they fastened the clasp of a diamond choker around my neck. It was tight—just a fraction of an inch from choking me—a reminder that even in a gown of shimmering violet silk, I was still on a leash.

The gold tether was gone, replaced by something far more invisible and far more dangerous.

"The countdown is at twenty minutes, Amara," Kai whispered into my ear, his breath a warm contrast to the ice of the diamonds. "Lucian is here. My mother-in-law is here. And every man in that ballroom wants to see the Fox fall."

I looked at my reflection. The violet in my eyes was glowing with a fierce, unnatural light, mirrored by the silk of my dress. I didn't look like a victim. I looked like a goddess of war.

"What do we do?" I asked, my voice steady despite the shaking of my heart.

"We dance," Kai said, his eyes darkening. "We show them the perfect couple. We let Lucian think he has the upper hand until I find the room where he's holding your mother. But Rule Number One is still in effect. You stay by my side. If you wander, the guards have orders to shoot Lucian—and your mother—on sight."

He grabbed my hand, his grip possessive, and led me out toward the grand staircase.

THE BALLROOM (9:00 PM)

The music was a haunting violin concerto that seemed to pulse in time with the ticking in my blood. As we descended the stairs, the room fell silent. Hundreds of faces turned toward us, their eyes greedy and sharp.

"Smile, Little Fox," Kai murmured through gritted teeth as he nodded to a senator.

I smiled, but my eyes were scanning the crowd. And then I saw him.

Lucian was standing by the champagne fountain, wearing a white tuxedo that made him look like a fallen angel. He held a glass up to me, a smirk playing on his lips. He wasn't afraid. He was enjoying the chaos.

"Kai," Lucian said as we approached, his voice smooth and dangerous. "You brought the Queen. She looks... radiant. Almost ready to explode."

"Where is she, Lucian?" Kai's voice was a low vibration of pure murder.

"All in good time, big brother," Lucian said, stepping closer. He reached out to touch my arm, but Kai's hand snapped out, catching Lucian's wrist in a grip that would have crushed bone.

"Don't touch what you can't afford," Kai hissed.

"Oh, I can afford her," Lucian laughed, leaning in to whisper so only we could hear. "Because while you're here playing 'husband,' the countdown just hit the fifteen-minute mark. If she doesn't get the second half of the 'Cure'—the one only I have—the violet fire will consume her from the inside out."

I felt a sharp, searing pain in my chest. The bioluminescence in my veins flared so bright it was visible through the silk of my dress. People began to whisper, pointing at the "glowing" woman.

"Dance with her, Kai," Lucian mocked. "Let everyone see the Fox's bride burn."

AMARA'S POV

Kai pulled me onto the dance floor. He didn't have a choice. If we fled, Lucian would disappear, and my mother with him.

He pulled me flush against his chest, his hand on the small of my back, guiding me through a frantic, high-speed waltz. The friction of our bodies, the heat of the crowd, and the ticking in my blood created a sensory overload.

"Kai... it's happening," I gasped, my head dropping onto his shoulder. "The heat... I can't breathe."

"Look at me, Amara! Stay with me!" Kai commanded.

He didn't care who was watching. He stopped in the middle of the dance floor, his hands framing my face. He kissed me—not the cold, calculated kiss of the boardroom, but a desperate, lung-crushing embrace. He was trying to use his own DNA, his own "anchor" status, to dampen the surge.

The crowd gasped as the "perfect couple" shared a moment of raw, unhinged passion in the middle of the gala. But under the kiss, Kai whispered: "The service elevator behind the red curtain. Go. My team is in position. I'll handle Lucian."

He pulled back, his eyes searching mine. "I love you," he whispered—three words I never thought I'd hear from the monster.

He shoved me toward the curtain and turned toward Lucian with his gun drawn.

THE ESCAPE (ESCAPE ATTEMPT #2: THE BETRAYAL)

I ran. I didn't look back. I burst through the red curtain and into the cold, industrial hallway of the Opera House.

I hit the button for the service elevator, my hands shaking. 00:08:12.

The doors opened, but Kai's team wasn't there.

Standing in the elevator was my father.

"Dad?" I cried, moving toward him. "We have to go! My mother is alive! Kai is fighting Lucian—"

My father didn't move. He didn't hug me. He reached out and pushed me back, his face a mask of cold, pathetic greed.

"I know she's alive, Amara," he said, his voice trembling. "Lucian told me. But he offered me more than Kai ever did. He offered me a seat in the new world order. A world without the Foxes."

"Dad, what are you saying?"

" Stay right there, Amara," he whispered, pressing the button to close the elevator doors. "You were the price of my peace. You are a Fox now. And the Foxes have to die for me to live."

The doors slammed shut.

I was alone in the dark hallway. My father had betrayed me. My mother was a prisoner. My husband was in a gunfight. And I had seven minutes before my blood turned into a bomb.

I fell to my knees, a scream of pure, violet agony ripping from my throat. The "Golden Cage" was gone. The world was gone. There was only the countdown.
