Chapter 5 - Chapter 4: Petals of Starlight(Revised)

POV: Aether Lux

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting Beacon Academy in hues of amber and rose. The day's excitement had faded, leaving behind a tranquil stillness that settled gently over the campus.

Aether Lux leaned against the cool stone railing of Beacon's balcony, gazing out at the rolling hills of Vale. The wind brushed softly against his coat, carrying with it the faint scent of blooming flowers.

For the first time since his reincarnation, he allowed himself to breathe.

Today had gone well.

Team ALTR had proven their strength, and the future—though uncertain—remained intact.

For now.

"You know," a cheerful voice chimed, "most people come up here to relax, not brood dramatically like a mysterious hero."

Aether smiled faintly without turning.

"I had a feeling you might show up, Ruby."

Ruby Rose stepped onto the balcony, her crimson cloak fluttering gently behind her. She clasped her hands behind her back, rocking slightly on her heels.

"Am I that predictable?" she asked with a playful grin.

"Not predictable," he replied. "Just enthusiastic."

She laughed softly. "Okay, that's fair."

Ruby moved beside him, resting her arms on the railing. Below them, Beacon's courtyard glowed in the fading light.

"It's beautiful," she said quietly. "I still can't believe we're really here. It's only been a few days, but it feels like a dream."

Aether nodded. "I know what you mean. Everything's happened so fast."

For a moment, they stood together in comfortable silence.

Then Ruby glanced at him, her silver eyes shimmering in the twilight.

"You were amazing today," she said. "In class, during initiation—everything. You make it look so easy."

He shook his head gently. "It isn't easy. I'm still figuring things out… just like everyone else."

She smiled warmly. "Maybe. But you're doing a pretty great job."

Her sincerity caught him off guard.

"You think so?" he asked.

"Of course!" she replied. "You're kind, brave, and always thinking about others. That's what a true hero does."

Aether felt warmth spread through his chest.

"That means a lot," he said softly. "Especially coming from you."

Ruby blinked in surprise. "M-Me?"

"Yes," he said. "Your optimism and determination… they're inspiring. You remind me why I wanted to become a Huntsman in the first place."

A faint blush dusted her cheeks.

"T-Thanks," she murmured, fidgeting with the hem of her cloak. "I just want to protect people and make the world a better place."

Aether smiled gently. "Then Remnant is lucky to have you."

A breeze stirred, scattering a few rose petals into the air. One drifted between them before landing softly at Ruby's feet.

She picked it up, twirling it thoughtfully.

"You know," she said, "even though we've only known each other for a few days… I feel like meeting you was important. Like destiny gave me a little nudge."

Aether's heart skipped.

"I… feel the same way," he admitted.

Their eyes met.

For a moment, the world seemed to fade away—the sounds of Beacon, the distant hum of airships, even the weight of the future.

All that remained was the quiet warmth between them.

Ruby looked down shyly. "I'm really glad we became partners during initiation… even if it was just for a day."

"So am I," Aether said.

He hesitated, then gently extended his hand.

"May I?"

She placed her hand in his, her touch warm and tentative.

Their fingers intertwined awkwardly at first, then settled naturally.

They stood together as constellations emerged overhead.

"It's peaceful up here," Ruby whispered.

"Yes," he replied. "It is."

Above them, the night sky shimmered with countless stars.

Aether glanced at her, memorizing the moment—the way the moonlight illuminated her face, the way her smile glowed brighter than any constellation.

*I'll protect that smile,* he vowed silently. *No matter what the future holds.*

Ruby squeezed his hand gently.

"Aether?"

"Yes?"

She smiled, her voice soft but sincere.

"Let's both become the kind of heroes the world needs."

He returned her smile.

"Together."

As if in response, Ruby's Semblance stirred. A swirl of rose petals danced around them, glowing softly beneath the moonlight.

Aether's Aura flickered in gentle gold, illuminating the balcony in a warm, radiant glow.

Petals and light intertwined beneath the stars.

A promise—unspoken, yet understood.

Ruby laughed softly as the petals settled.

"We should head back before Yang starts teasing me again."

Aether chuckled. "A wise decision."

Reluctantly, they let go of each other's hands.

As they walked back toward the dormitories, their shoulders brushed lightly, neither pulling away.

They had only known each other for a few days.

But beneath Beacon's starlit sky, something beautiful had begun to bloom.
