Chapter 92 - 092: The Script of Fate

"Perimeter report."

The sudden buzz in the comms snapped Shorai back to the present. He blinked, the shifting colors of his warped perception fading as he centered himself. A series of status updates crackled through the wire before he finally clicked his mic.

"Fox. All clear."

He remained a statue atop the rooftop, his gaze drifting toward the stadium. Below, the air was thick with the suffocating anticipation of a crowd waiting for a show that had been stalled too long.

Shorai's vision shifted again, pushing his consciousness toward the horizon.

'They are preparing the spark,' he thought, watching the jagged chakra signatures of the hidden vanguards begin to pulse in unison.

A sudden eruption of noise thundered from the arena. Sasuke and Kakashi had arrived—late, flamboyant, and draped in the arrogance of those who believe they are the protagonists of the world. The match began, a blur of sand and speed that turned the stadium into a pressure cooker.

To the crowd, it was a spectacle. To Shorai, it was a countdown.

He watched Gaara retreat into his sphere of hardened minerals, and he saw Sasuke retreat to the stadium wall, fingers sparking with the first chirps of the Chidori. But Shorai didn't wait for the strike. He looked East.

A lonely pillar of black smoke rose above the treeline, oily and wrong against the summer sky. Simultaneously, his communication device vibrated with a primal urgency.

"Reporting. Unidentified smoke in the forest. Eastern Gate sector. Approximately twenty kilometers out."

Shorai clicked his reserved line. "Fox here. Confirming visual. Heavy smoke rising from the East."

"Stay ready," Ibiki's voice crackled back, cold as iron. "Keep the lines clean unless the situation shifts."

Shorai's eyes narrowed behind his mask. A thin smile tugged at his lips. "It's shifting now," he whispered.

A massive wave of chakra swept through the stadium like a physical wind. Translucent white feathers began to drift down from the sky—the Temple of Nirvana Genjutsu. Through the Aetheric tether, Shorai felt Ino's heartbeat smooth out into the heavy, rhythmic cadence of a deep sleep.

'She's safe. For now.'

A low tremor shook the ground, followed by a silence more terrifying than any explosion. Shorai turned his gaze back to the East. A giant, three-headed silhouette breached the village walls, the stone crumbling like dry bread under the weight of the summon.

'If I report the exact coordinates now, I reveal too much,' Shorai calculated, his knuckles whitening as he gripped his kunai. 'I need confirmation from the scouts before I move.'

Twenty minutes of agonizing silence passed before the comms finally screamed.

"A giant snake! Eastern Gate! They've breached—Agh!" "Sand shinobi! Multiple squads! They're everywhere!"

The emergency line turned into a cacophony of panicked reports and the the sound of steel meeting flesh.

"Confirming... Sand and Sound in coordination. The walls are down."

"Boar reporting! Contact in the stadium! The Hokage has been taken! A barrier is up—three ANBU are down!"

The village's peace didn't just break; it shattered.

"Fox." Ibiki's voice was strained, the sound of a man holding back a flood.

"Here."

"Protocol is live. Move."

Shorai dropped from the rooftop, a streak of shadow. He arrived at the high-security sector just as the heavy iron doors groaned open. Danzo Shimura stepped out, his posture upright, his single visible eye reflecting the chaos with an unsettling, clinical calm.

Two Jonin stood guard, their faces tight with a fear they couldn't quite mask.

"Protocol engaged," Shorai said, his voice a disciplined rasp. "Lord Danzo is to be relocated immediately."

"Change of plans, Fox," one guard replied. "The other Elders are being handled by a separate unit. The three of us are the primary escort."

"Lead the way," Danzo said. He gave Shorai a long, calculating look, his gaze lingering on the azure stripes of the mask.

They moved through the subterranean veins of the village. As they emerged near the cliffside, the scale of the disaster became visible. To the North, smoke choked the sky. At the stadium, a shimmering violet box—the Four Violet Flames Formation—had locked the Third Hokage in a duel with his past.

Shorai's perception pierced the barrier, seeing the hollow, orange-tinged undead souls of the First and Second Hokages being wielded like puppets by a laughing Orochimaru.

"Hiruzen is fighting him..." Danzo murmured, his voice sounding strangely metallic.

"All because of you!" one of the Jonin guards snapped, his nerves finally breaking. "This is the fallout of your secrets!"

"Mind your words," Danzo replied, his tone as sharp as a blade. "I played no part in this theater. We are all being played by the very man Hiruzen chose to spare. I take no pleasure in seeing my village burn."

"Keep telling yourself that," the Jonin spat. "Maybe one day the lie will stick."

As they reached the hillside, Shorai's ears pricked. Woosh.

"Ambush!" Shorai shouted.

A cascade of projectiles rained down from the rooftops. The two Jonin reacted instantly, their combined wind and fire jutsus incinerating the incoming volley in a roar of heat.

"Fox, stay with Danzo! We'll hold the line!"

"I'll assist," Shorai countered. He formed a hand sign. "Shadow Clone Jutsu."

With a silent puff of air, a second Fox appeared and vaulted over the railings, kunai drawn. The original Shorai stepped closer to Danzo, shielding him.

"Is the Hokage trying to keep me safe?" Danzo asked suddenly, his voice echoing off the stone walls as they continued toward the bunker. "Or is he simply positioning me where it is easiest to watch me die?"

Shorai didn't look back. "I am in no position to pass a verdict, Lord Danzo. My orders are for your safety."

"How foolish of him," Danzo mused. "To blame me for the darkness, only to use a creature like you to guard it." He stopped walking, forcing Shorai to turn. "I know who you are. No matter the mask you choose to wear, boy."

Shorai took a slow, measured breath. The Reality Stone hummed in his chest. "Then you know that I am more of a babysitter than a guard to someone as powerful as you."

Danzo's expression stiffened, then relaxed into something resembling respect. "You need to work on your bluntness. But you are correct. I despise being handled."

They reached the massive stone doors of the bunker. Shorai entered the secret sequence, the gears grinding with a heavy, industrial groan.

"There are very few youngsters like you," Danzo continued. "I can count them on one hand. That snake and his spy... they took two of my men to frame me. A clever way to paint a target on my back."

"Then this will prove your innocence," Shorai said, stepping back to let the Elder pass. "Whatever the politics, the village comes first. We are on the same side, after all."

"Practice what you preach, Fox," Danzo said, stepping into the darkness of the bunker. "The shadows grow longer, yet your part in this play has only just begun."

"Perhaps fate enjoys irony," Shorai said with a faint smirk as he waited for the stone door to grind shut. He turned to his comms.

"Ibiki-san. Fox reporting. Lord Danzo is secured. Repeat: the asset is in the bunker."

"Good job," Ibiki's voice came through, ragged. "What about your escort?"

"The Jonin are still engaged. My clone is assisting. I am securing the internal passages now."

Shorai leaned against the cold stone, a long sigh escaping his lips.

"Fox," Danzo's voice echoed from within the bunker. "Know this: I would never harm my friend's life. No matter our philosophies."

"I believe you, sir," Shorai replied, his voice calm. "After all... he is a necessity of the system."

"Tend to your orders, boy," Danzo's voice faded as he sat. "The world outside these walls is already changing."
