Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 -The Illusion of Freedom

Navi didn't sit for long.

She had tried to—forcing herself into stillness, into patience, into the fragile belief that waiting would eventually give her clarity.

But the silence in the room no longer felt safe.

It felt like absence.

The moment kept replaying in her mind.

Him reading her words.

Understanding them.

And then—

choosing not to respond.

Not confusion. Not hesitation.

A decision.

Her fingers tightened slowly around the edge of her notepad.

This wasn't about language anymore.

They understood enough.

They were simply choosing what to reveal—and what to withhold.

And she was not part of that decision.

If I stay... I stop being in control of my own story.

Her gaze drifted to the door.

Closed. Guarded.

She didn't move immediately.

Because leaving wasn't just physical.

It was irreversible.

If she left, she would be stepping into something she didn't understand.

If she stayed, she would remain inside something she would never understand.

Both choices felt like risk.

Only one felt like movement.

Her jaw tightened slightly.

That was enough.

She stood.

Across the palace, Yi Hyun had not returned to rest.

The corridors were still, but not naturally so. It felt like the kind of silence that existed only when decisions had already been made elsewhere—decisions he had not been included in.

The order had come without delay.

Transfer. By morning. To the Main Palace.

No report. No inquiry.

Only instruction.

Someone had already informed them.

Which meant whatever she was, whatever she represented, it was no longer contained within his authority alone.

His fingers rested briefly against the edge of the table.

The number still refused to behave like something real.

And yet it kept returning whenever she did.

If she was taken—

The thought stopped there.

Because beyond that point, nothing about this remained controllable.

His gaze lowered.

Then stilled.

Outside Navi's room, Bongu leaned slightly closer to the door, watching through the narrow gap.

"She's moving again," he said quietly.

Seo Jinhwan didn't look up. "How?"

"Not pacing," Bongu replied after a moment. "She's choosing things. Gathering them."

A pause.

"...Packing."

Jinhwan's eyes shifted slightly.

"With intent?"

Bongu nodded. "Like she's preparing to leave."

The air in the corridor subtly changed.

Footsteps approached.

Measured. Unhurried.

Yi Hyun stopped beside them.

"Say it."

Bongu hesitated—but this time, he answered more fully.

"My lord... she is preparing to escape."

Silence followed.

Then—

"Reduce the watch."

Bongu blinked. "My lord?"

"Quietly."

A beat.

"Leave the east passage unguarded."

Bongu frowned, uncertainty tightening his expression, but he did not interrupt further.

Inside the room, Navi moved with purpose now. Not rushed, not frantic—focused. She dropped beside her suitcase and opened it, but her movements were selective. She didn't reach for everything—only what mattered.

Her small bag was emptied, then refilled with care. Notepad. Pen. Phrasebook. Her phone—after a brief hesitation. A source of light. A small mirror. A folded scarf.

She paused once more, glancing at the rest of her belongings as if weighing them, then added a simple hair tie.

That was it.

The suitcase closed.

And she stood.

The hallway outside was empty.

Too empty.

She noticed immediately.

Her steps slowed.

Her pulse tightened.

This isn't right.

Her hand hovered near the doorway.

If this was a trap—

then staying inside was also a trap.

Just a different kind.

She exhaled once.

Then stepped out.

And did not look back.

From the shadows, Yi Hyun watched her leave.

His expression did not change.

A moment passed.

Then—

"Follow."

The forest received her like something already in motion.

The air shifted immediately—cooler, heavier, unfamiliar in a way that made orientation feel unreliable.

Navi slowed as soon as she crossed into it.

Everything felt wrong.

Not dangerous in an obvious way.

Just... unstable.

She turned once.

Then again.

The path behind her was already less distinct than it should have been.

No markers.

No certainty.

Only trees repeating in unfamiliar rhythm.

She chose a direction and walked.

At first, it felt correct.

Then it didn't.

The ground subtly changed beneath her steps, forcing her attention to adjust constantly. What felt like forward movement slowly became uncertain, as if the forest itself refused to confirm direction.

Still, she continued.

Minutes passed.

Maybe longer.

Then she stopped.

The stream appeared again.

Same curve. Same leaning tree. Same quiet water.

Her breath caught.

No.

That wasn't possible.

Her mind tried to reject it before her body understood it.

She turned sharply, choosing another direction with more urgency this time.

The forest responded by becoming denser.

Quieter.

Less readable.

Her breathing grew slightly uneven.

Don't stop.

Keep moving.

From a distance, they followed her without closing in.

Never visible.

Never absent.

Bongu's voice lowered after a long stretch of silence.

"She's circling."

Yi Hyun did not respond.

Bongu glanced toward him, then back at the forest.

"She's been moving for hours without real distance," he added quietly.

Still nothing.

Only observation.

Only patience.

By the time Navi slowed again, her body had begun to signal what her mind had been ignoring.

Her throat was dry.

Her legs heavier than before.

And only now did she fully realize—

She hadn't eaten.

The food earlier... she had ignored it.

At the time, it had felt like control.

Now it felt like a mistake.

Her stomach tightened sharply, pulling her attention inward.

She pressed her hand briefly against her side.

Think.

Water. Food. Direction.

Something stable.

That's when she saw them.

Clusters of dark fruit hanging low along a thin vine.

Her steps slowed.

Something about them felt familiar enough to lower her guard.

Not grapes.

But close enough that her mind immediately tried to classify them as safe.

She crouched slowly.

The fruit looked almost like something she had seen before—wild, imperfect versions of something she knew.

Her fingers brushed one lightly.

Soft.

Slightly too soft.

She hesitated.

Something felt off.

But hunger pressed harder than caution.

Her stomach tightened again, sharper this time.

Wild fruit, maybe. Local variant. People adapted to worse.

Her fingers closed around one.

She held it for a moment longer than necessary.

Then—

she bit.

Sweet.

Immediate relief softened her shoulders.

Not just edible—comforting in its familiarity.

She swallowed.

Waited.

Nothing immediate.

Another.

Still fine.

The hesitation began to dissolve.

One more.

Then another.

Her pace subtly increased.

From the trees, Bongu stiffened.

His eyes locked onto the vine.

"...My lord."

His voice lowered.

"That is Moonvine fruit."

Yi Hyun's gaze remained fixed on Navi.

Bongu took a step forward without thinking.

"She's eating too much," he said quickly. "We should stop her before—"

He stopped mid-sentence.

Because nothing moved.

No command.

No reaction.

Only observation.

Something in Bongu tightened.

But he did not act.

Navi exhaled slowly.

The tension in her body eased slightly.

Okay.

She was fine.

She reached for another—

Then stopped.

"...Wait..."

Something shifted low in her stomach.

Not sharp.

Not immediate.

Wrong.

She pushed herself up—but the ground beneath her feet felt unstable, as if her balance no longer fully matched reality.

Her vision blurred at the edges.

No.

Her hand pressed instinctively against her abdomen as the sensation spread.

This isn't—

Her thought fractured.

Yi Hyun moved.

Not rushed.

Not hesitant.

Certain.

She reached the stream and collapsed beside it, trying to drink.

It didn't help.

Her breathing became uneven.

Her movements less controlled.

She forced herself up again.

One step.

Then—

everything gave out.

She collapsed.

This time, he did not wait.

Yi Hyun closed the distance and lifted her without effort. Her body was warm, her pulse unstable beneath his hand.

His gaze flicked once toward the vine.

Then back to her.

He had already seen this outcome.

And still, he had allowed it.

Behind him, Bongu finally spoke again.

"...My lord."

A pause.

Urgency surfaced now.

"We should go back immediately."

Yi Hyun looked at her again, but something had shifted now. Not urgency. Not yet.

Something deeper.

Something that didn't align.

He mounted his horse, still holding her, his attention no longer passive. No longer detached.

Then he turned.

Not toward the palace.

"My lord... we should return—"

"Not yet."

Jinhwan lowered his head after a beat.

"Yes, my lord."

Bongu hesitated.

His eyes flicked once toward the safe path behind them.

Clear. Known. Expected.

Then back to Yi Hyun.

Something in him resisted.

But the order held.

And slowly—

they turned away from the palace.

The forest closed behind them like it had never been an option.

And in Yi Hyun's arms—

the only answer he had—

no longer behaved like something that belonged to any known logic.
