Chapter 116 - CHAPTER 116 — ELISE

I got through half my morning without reading a single line right.

The Hargrove file was open on my laptop, and I'd read the same paragraph four times. Easement language and boundary descriptions were the kind of thing I could usually do in my sleep.

Not today.

My eyes kept sliding off the words and going somewhere else, and the somewhere else was always the same. The concrete room, the smoke, Reid's hand on my jaw.

I closed the laptop.

"That bad?" Nadia asked. She'd come in with tea and set it by my elbow.

"Just a slow morning."

She gave me a look that said she didn't buy it, but she didn't push. That was the thing about Nadia. She saw everything and only said about a third of it.

"Eat something later. You skipped breakfast."

"I'll eat."

"You say that and then you don't." She left before I could argue.

I drank the tea because it was there. Then I sat with the thing I'd been not-thinking about since we got back.

I hadn't told Rhys.
