Chapter 2 - RULES

The first thing I realized after signing my life away…

Was that Kael Draven didn't waste time.

"Pack your things."

The command came the moment I stepped out of his office.

No softness. No pause. No room to breathe.

I turned slowly. "What?"

Kael didn't even look at me as he adjusted the cuff of his watch, already moving past me like I was expected to follow.

"You're moving in tonight."

My heart skipped.

"Tonight?" I repeated, my voice sharper than I intended. "That's not part of the agreement. I need time to—"

"To what?" he cut in smoothly, finally glancing at me. "Say goodbye to a life that no longer exists?"

The words hit harder than they should have.

Because they were true.

Still—

"My family—"

"Will be taken care of."

He stopped walking.

So suddenly that I almost ran into him.

"You signed the contract," he continued, his voice low, controlled. "I keep my end. You keep yours."

My chest tightened.

"And my end starts now."

The drive to his mansion was silent.

Painfully silent.

I sat in the back seat of a sleek black car that smelled like money and power, my fingers clenched in my lap as the city blurred past the tinted windows.

Everything felt distant.

Unreal.

Like I had stepped out of my life and into someone else's nightmare.

Across from me, Kael sat with effortless dominance, scrolling through something on his phone as if marrying a stranger was just another item on his schedule.

No tension.

No hesitation.

Nothing.

I studied him carefully when he wasn't looking.

Sharp jaw. Dark hair. Eyes that looked like they had never known mercy.

He was too calm.

Too in control.

And that scared me more than anything.

"Stop staring."

My breath caught.

I looked away instantly, heat rising to my cheeks.

"I wasn't—"

"You were."

His voice was flat.

Unbothered.

"I don't like it."

My head snapped back toward him. "Excuse me?"

He finally looked up, his gaze locking onto mine with unsettling intensity.

"I don't like being watched," he said. "Unless I allow it."

Something in my chest flared.

Anger.

Good.

At least I still felt something.

"Well," I shot back, "you should get used to it. I'm your wife now, remember?"

The moment the words left my mouth—

I knew I had pushed too far.

The air in the car shifted instantly.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Kael's gaze darkened, slow and deliberate.

Then he smiled.

And God—

That smile was worse than his silence.

"Careful, Aurelia."

My name rolled off his tongue like a warning.

"Don't confuse a contract with equality."

My stomach dropped.

Before I could respond, the car slowed.

Then stopped.

The door opened.

And just like that—

We had arrived.

His mansion wasn't just big.

It was intimidating.

Massive gates. Marble steps. Floor-to-ceiling glass that reflected the night like a mirror.

It didn't feel like a home.

It felt like territory.

Owned. Controlled. Untouchable.

"This is insane," I muttered under my breath as I stepped out.

Kael heard me.

Of course he did.

"Get used to it."

I clenched my jaw but said nothing as we walked inside.

The moment the doors opened, a wave of silence greeted us.

Not peaceful silence.

Structured silence.

Like everyone inside knew better than to make noise.

Staff lined subtly along the sides—maids, guards, assistants—all lowering their heads the moment Kael entered.

No one greeted him.

No one spoke.

They just… acknowledged.

Fearfully.

I felt it instantly.

This wasn't just respect.

This was control.

My fingers curled slightly.

"Follow me."

I did.

Because what else could I do?

His bedroom—

No.

Our bedroom.

The thought alone made my stomach twist.

It was larger than my entire apartment.

Dark tones. Clean lines. Everything perfectly arranged.

Nothing personal.

Nothing soft.

Nothing human.

It felt like him.

Cold.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

I stopped near the entrance.

"I'm not sleeping here."

The words came out before I could stop them.

Kael didn't react immediately.

He walked in slowly, placing his watch on the dresser before turning to face me.

"Yes," he said simply. "You are."

"No."

I shook my head, standing my ground.

"This wasn't discussed. We agreed to a public marriage. That doesn't mean—"

"It means exactly what I decide it means."

My breath caught.

"That's not how contracts work."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

Then—

He moved.

Fast.

One second he was across the room.

The next—

He was right in front of me.

Too close.

Way too close.

My back hit the door before I even realized I had stepped back.

My pulse spiked.

"Let's make something very clear," Kael said quietly, his voice dropping into something dangerously calm.

"I don't repeat myself."

My breath came faster now.

"You don't get to control every part of this," I snapped, even though my voice wavered slightly. "I'm not your property."

His hand lifted.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

And for a split second—

I thought he might touch me.

But instead—

His palm pressed flat against the door beside my head.

Trapping me.

Not touching.

But close enough to feel.

"Everything about this arrangement," he murmured, leaning in just enough to make my heart stutter, "is control."

My throat went dry.

"You signed away your choices the moment you put your name on that paper."

"I didn't sign away my dignity."

Something flashed in his eyes.

Dark.

Sharp.

Interested.

"Good," he said softly.

"Because I'd be very disappointed if you broke too easily."

The words sent a shiver down my spine.

This—

This wasn't normal.

This wasn't just a marriage.

It was something else.

Something far more dangerous.

Before I could respond, he stepped back.

Just like that.

The space between us returned.

But the tension didn't.

"Get settled," he said, turning away like nothing had happened. "You'll need to learn fast."

"Learn what?" I demanded.

He paused at the door.

Then glanced back.

His gaze locking onto mine with unsettling intensity.

"My rules."

The door closed behind him.

And just like that—

I was alone.

Alone in a room that didn't feel like mine.

In a life that definitely wasn't mine.

My chest rose and fell rapidly as I tried to steady myself.

This wasn't what I expected.

It was worse.

Way worse.

Because deep down…

I was starting to realize something terrifying.

Kael Draven didn't just want a wife.

He wanted control.

Total.

Absolute.

And I had just handed it to him.

An hour later, I was still standing in the same spot.

Still trying to process everything.

Still trying to breathe.

A soft knock broke the silence.

I stiffened.

"Come in," I said cautiously.

A woman entered—mid-thirties, composed, professional.

"Miss Vance," she greeted politely. "I'm Elira. I'll be assisting you."

I blinked. "Assisting me?"

"Yes," she said. "With your schedule, wardrobe, and… adjustments."

Adjustments.

That didn't sound good.

"I don't need assistance," I replied, trying to regain some control.

Her expression didn't change.

"That's not optional."

Of course it wasn't.

I exhaled slowly.

"What exactly am I adjusting to?"

Elira hesitated.

Just slightly.

Then—

"To him."

A chill ran down my spine.

Before I could ask more—

The door opened again.

And Kael walked in.

My breath caught.

His gaze moved between us briefly before settling on me.

"Good," he said. "You're still here."

Something about the way he said it—

Like he had expected me to run—

Made my chest tighten.

"I signed a contract," I said stiffly. "Not my freedom to leave whenever I want."

His lips curved faintly.

"You'll learn."

My stomach dropped.

"Learn what?"

He stepped closer.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Terrifying.

"That leaving…" he said quietly, stopping just inches away from me again, "…isn't as simple as walking out."

My pulse slammed against my ribs.

"What does that mean?"

He held my gaze.

Unblinking.

Unreadable.

Then—

He reached into his pocket and pulled something out.

A phone.

My phone.

My breath caught.

"I believe this belongs to you."

I stared at it.

Confused.

"I—how did you—"

"I replaced it," he said calmly. "Yours is gone."

My heart skipped.

"What?"

"This one is monitored."

The words hit like ice.

"Every call. Every message."

My chest tightened.

"You can't do that."

"I already did."

Panic started to rise.

"That's invasion of privacy!"

"No," he corrected softly.

"It's protection."

"From what?"

His gaze darkened slightly.

"From making mistakes."

My stomach twisted.

This wasn't just control anymore.

This was something deeper.

Something darker.

I took a step back.

"Kael… what exactly did I sign myself into?"

For the first time—

Something flickered in his expression.

Not softness.

Not kindness.

Something worse.

Something that made my blood run cold.

Because when he spoke—

His voice dropped into something low… dangerous… final.

"You signed into a life," he said slowly, "where everything about you…"

He stepped closer.

Closing the distance again.

"…belongs to me."

My breath caught sharply.

"And Aurelia?"

His voice softened just enough to send a chill through me.

"If you think this is just about saving your family…"

He paused.

His eyes locking onto mine with something dark and knowing.

"Then you're already in more trouble than you realize."

Cliffhanger Line:

Because the way he looked at me in that moment—

Wasn't like a man who had just gained a wife.

It was like a man…

who had finally claimed something he had been hunting for a long time.
