Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: Obtaining the g-virus

Lightning streaked across the dim sky as rain relentlessly washed over the dying body of Raccoon City.

Power had long since been cut; the entire City was soaked in damp darkness, with only the occasional bolt of lightning tearing through the sky to momentarily illuminate the twisted streetscapes and wandering zombies.

At the police station, from a hidden exit of the sewer system, a metal grate was laboriously pushed open from the inside.

A blood-soaked figure stumbled out, rolling onto the cold, slick concrete of an abandoned parking lot.

He gasped for air, rain mixing with blood as it flowed from his forehead, but the eyes hidden behind his tactical goggles remained as sharp and calm as a hawk's.

Hunk, the sole survivor of U.S.S. Alpha Team.

He had just crawled out of the hell that had devoured all his teammates.

With few bullets remaining and his physical strength pushed to its limit, he had nonetheless completed his mission.

Hunk's right hand tightly gripped a silver metal sample case emblazoned with the Umbrella Corporation logo.

Inside was the only intact original sample of the g-virus.

Reaching the outside, he leaned against a cold support pillar to temporarily escape the torrential rain while staying alert for threats that could emerge from any direction.

After a brief respite, he fumbled for his encrypted radio; his fingers trembled slightly from the cold and blood loss, yet his movements remained steady.

He needed to call for the final extraction point—his only hope of leaving this City of death.

"Alpha calling Command Center, sample acquired."

His voice was hoarse, struggling to transmit through the sound of rain and static.

"Requesting extraction coordinates..."

*Crack—!*

A massive bolt of lightning suddenly struck, turning the entire street and the surrounding dilapidated buildings bone-white!

The radio slipped from Hunk's hand. Calls continued to come through from the other side, but Hunk did not answer; he stood frozen in place, his pupils dilated to their limit, his body beginning to tremble.

Directly ahead of him, as the lightning faded, a massive figure entered his sight.

It wasn't a Tyrant, nor any bio-weapon he knew of.

It was a living statue of slaughter.

Its massive, streamlined Torso was covered in pale bone armor, and rain gathered on its hideous, giant frame, flowing down to the ground.

Beneath that massive, terrifying crest, four crimson eyes had been so bright and horrifying in that brief instant.

And those four eyes were staring straight at him.

No! More accurately, they were locked onto the silver sample case gripped in his hand.

Time seemed to freeze. Hunk had undergone the most rigorous training, faced pursuits by Tyrants, and escaped from the claws of the g-virus; he thought he had seen the most extreme horrors outside of the human arsenal.

But at this moment, his blood ran cold, and every nerve was screaming with a high-level alarm!

It wasn't the wariness of facing a powerful enemy, but the absolute suppression and fear originating from deep within his genes—the reaction of a lower organism before an apex predator!

The combat skills and iron will he took pride in seemed so laughable and fragile under this gaze.

He wanted to move, to raise his gun, to find cover, but his body wouldn't obey, as stiff as if it were filled with lead.

His brain worked frantically, yet it couldn't find any tactical plan to deal with such an existence.

Because the answer his brain provided was that any resistance would be futile.

Lilith moved.

There was no deafening roar, no precursor of a lunging strike.

Only that long, segmented bone tail-whip, which had been hanging behind her, slowly rose and wrapped around to the front of Hunk.

The sharp bone spike at the end of the tail-whip didn't attack Hunk's body; instead, it hooked onto the handle of the silver sample case in his hand!

A massive force that Hunk couldn't resist surged through; he felt a sharp pain in the webbing of his right hand, and his fingers involuntarily let go.

His eyes widened as he watched the g-virus sample—the one he had risked everything and sacrificed all his teammates for—be easily swept away by that tail-whip.

Only now did Hunk's body seem to break free from the paralysis. He stumbled back a step, futilely trying to raise his muzzle.

But his gaze could only follow that behemoth in a daze.

Lilith's four crimson vertical pupils glanced at him indifferently. In the next moment, her folded giant wings suddenly snapped open!

"Boom—!"

A violent air current exploded outward with Lilith at the center!

The standing water on the ground was instantly blasted away, forming a ring of mist, while broken debris and rain were swept into the sky.

Hunk was blown away by the current and collapsed onto the ground.

As he struggled to lift his head and looked through the misty rain and the still-unsettled air...

That sky-blotting shadow had already soared into the air, tearing through the curtain of rain. With a few flaps of its wings, it vanished into the thick clouds and endless darkness, as if it had never existed.

Only the empty feeling in his hand proved that the brief and terrifying encounter was no hallucination.

The heavy rain continued to fall.

Hunk sat slumped in the freezing water, leaning against the rough concrete pillar, motionless.

His face, usually masked in determination and cold hardness, was now a complete blank as he stared vacantly in the direction where Lilith had disappeared.

"Just who... created such a terrifying creature..."

This was entirely a case of humanity playing with fire and getting burned... Atop a tall building, Lilith looked at the snatched suitcase, a flash of decisiveness crossing her four crimson vertical pupils.

She used her tail spike to pry open the suitcase; a brand-new virus sample lay quietly inside.

And this virus sample was precisely the g-virus.

The mission this time was to obtain the g-virus; after the dungeon ended, it would likely be reclaimed by the system.

But having tasted the enhancement brought by the t-virus, Lilith didn't want to give up the g-virus just like that.

Furthermore, unlike the t-virus, the g-virus was a complete sample that could be injected directly to gain endless evolutionary power.

"With my current physical strength, I should be able to suppress the g-virus's Mutation. Even if the worst-case scenario occurs, I still have one evolution left. As long as I return and activate the evolution, I can completely suppress or even merge with the g-virus."

Lilith weighed the threats and enhancements of injecting the g-virus, her four crimson vertical pupils flashing with a terrifying red light.

Having already become like this, Lilith didn't care about the changes to her body at all; for her, becoming stronger was enough.

Besides, with every Mutation, her body would change. Lilith herself didn't know what she would eventually evolve into.

The slender bone tail wrapped behind her and stabbed directly into her back, carving out a deep gash.

Corrosive blood slid down Lilith's bone armor and dripped onto the ground, sizzling.

The concrete ground was corroded into a hole almost instantly.
