Chapter 22 - CHAPTER 22

Kanae Kocho did not immediately accept Kokushibo's offer.

For all her conviction, there were still bonds she could not sever so easily. Her thoughts drifted to Shinobu Kocho, to the quiet halls of the Butterfly Mansion, and to the girls who depended on her gentle presence. These were not attachments one could discard with a single decision, no matter how resolute one's ideals might be.

Sensing her hesitation, Kokushibo allowed a faint, knowing smile to surface. His six eyes studied her as though peering straight into her convictions.

"You claim to believe that humans and demons can coexist," he said evenly. "Then why hesitate now? Or was that belief never as absolute as you thought?"

The words struck deeper than any blade. Kanae's expression faltered for only a moment before she let out a soft, self-aware laugh, tinged with bitterness.

"…You're cruel," she admitted quietly. "But perhaps you're right."

Then, with a calm that belied the gravity of her choice, she lifted her gaze.

"Very well. I will believe in that future… and I will become a demon."

Kokushibo wasted no time. He extended his hand, allowing his blood thick with the power granted by Muzan Kibutsuji to flow. Kanae accepted it.

The transformation began instantly.

Her body trembled as the foreign blood rewrote her very existence. Her beauty deepened into something almost ethereal, yet tinged with an unsettling allure. Her eyes turned a vivid crimson, but unlike Kokushibo, she did not manifest additional eyes her form remained closer to her human self, a reflection of her still-fragile transition.

Then came the hunger.

It surged through her like a tidal wave.

Not pain, not merely discomfort but an instinct, raw and undeniable.

Humans.

Kanae staggered slightly, her breath uneven as she clutched at her chest. Even before true starvation set in, the craving clawed at her mind, whispering, urging, demanding.

Kokushibo placed a hand on her shoulder, his voice calm, almost instructive.

"This is the reality of what you have chosen. A demon's strength is sustained through human flesh. No matter your resolve, denial alone will not sustain you."

Kanae said nothing. She had believed she could endure it, that her will would be enough but now, faced with the truth, even she could feel the limits of that belief.

And then

"Sister…!"

The voice shattered the moment.

A small figure stumbled into view, breath ragged, eyes wide with disbelief. Shinobu Kocho froze as the scene unfolded before her her beloved sister, now unmistakably a demon.

Kanae's expression wavered. "Shinobu… why are you here?"

But Shinobu did not answer. Her trembling hands tightened around her Nichirin Blade as grief twisted instantly into fury.

"You…!" she cried, her voice breaking as she glared at Kokushibo. "You did this to her! I'll kill you!"

She lunged forward without hesitation.

To Kokushibo, her speed and strength were negligible. She was not yet a Hashira, her techniques still unrefined compared to the masters of the Corps. He did not even bother to shift his stance.

Yet before her blade could reach him, Kanae moved.

Steel met steel as Kanae intercepted the strike, her sword halting Shinobu's with perfect precision.

Kokushibo's eyes narrowed slightly in surprise, though he made no move to interfere.

"Sister… why?" Shinobu's voice cracked, tears spilling freely now. "Why would you protect a demon?"

Kanae's grip tightened. Her thoughts were in turmoil regret, resolve, confusion all clashing within her. But one thing remained unshaken.

"Go back, Shinobu," she said softly. "Please."

But Shinobu could not accept it. The image before her was unbearable the sister she admired now standing between her and the enemy.

Kokushibo exhaled faintly, stepping forward at last. With a single motion, he pulled Kanae behind him and drew his blade.

"Enough."

The air split.

Moon Breathing, First Form: Dark Moon Evening Palace.

The slash struck the ground just before Shinobu, carving a deep scar into the earth without touching her. The sheer force of it sent her collapsing backward, terror overwhelming her body before she could even process what had happened.

"I spared her," Kokushibo said coldly. "Do not mistake that for mercy without limits."

Kanae instinctively moved to help Shinobu, but Kokushibo's presence halted her.

Still, Shinobu did not retreat.

Instead, she broke completely, sobbing as she reached out.

"Please… don't go… Sister, come back…!"

Her voice, small and desperate, echoed in the night like that of a lost child.

For a moment, even Kokushibo hesitated. Then, with a faint sigh, he turned his gaze away.

"…Go," he said. "Say your farewell. Then we leave."

Kanae nodded.

She knelt beside Shinobu, just as she had done countless times in the past, gently brushing the dust from her clothes. Her touch remained warm, familiar yet now unbearably distant.

"I chose this path," Kanae said quietly. "Because I still believe… that humans and demons can understand one another."

Her voice softened further.

"But I may fail. If that day comes… Shinobu, you must be the one to stop me."

Shinobu shook her head desperately, refusing to accept even the possibility.

Before she could respond, another presence cut through the night.

Without warning, a blade surged forward in a torrent of water-like strikes.

Giyu Tomioka had arrived.

Water Breathing, Fourth Form: Striking Tide.

The flowing slashes crashed toward Kokushibo, swift and unyielding but they were effortlessly deflected. In the next instant, Kokushibo's counterattack unleashed a storm of crescent blades, tearing through the air and striking Giyu with overwhelming force.

Giyu staggered, blood scattering as he barely remained standing. The gap between them was absolute.

The fragile calm shattered completely.

Kokushibo clicked his tongue softly. This was precisely the complication he wished to avoid. If more Hashira arrived, even unnecessary deaths could spiral into consequences he did not desire.

"We are leaving," he said, turning to Kanae.

She hesitated only a moment before stepping to his side.

Behind her, Shinobu's cries continued, raw and unrestrained.

Kanae removed her haori and gently placed it before her sister a silent keepsake, a fragment of what remained.

"Live well, Shinobu," she whispered.

Then she turned away.

Giyu, still struggling to comprehend what he had witnessed, could do nothing but watch as Kokushibo and the former Flower Hashira disappeared into the night together.

Silence fell.

At last, Giyu forced himself upright and approached Shinobu, placing a hesitant hand on her shoulder.

"…What happened?"

The question, simple as it was, shattered what little composure Shinobu had left. Her grief spilled over once more, leaving Giyu utterly at a loss.

The news spread swiftly through the Demon Slayer Corps.

The fall of Kanae Kocho a Hashira turned demon sent shockwaves through every rank.

Gyomei Himejima bowed his head, tears streaming freely as he clasped his hands in prayer. "Even she has been claimed… may her soul find peace."

Sanemi Shinazugawa reacted with fury, his voice laced with killing intent. "If she's a demon now, then she's no different from the rest. I'll cut her down myself."

Tengen Uzui sighed, arms crossed. "How unflashy… even a Hashira falling like that."

Giyu Tomioka remained silent, his thoughts unreadable.

And the Flame Hashira seat remained empty.

Kyojuro Rengoku had yet to inherit the title, while Makijuro Rengoku had withdrawn from the Corps under questionable circumstances, citing a loss of will.

At the head of it all, Kagaya Ubuyashiki closed his eyes briefly, his expression gentle yet heavy with sorrow.

"That is enough," he said softly. "We will not condemn her without understanding. Right now, Shinobu needs support."

His gaze shifted.

"Tomioka… stay with her."

Giyu stiffened slightly, caught off guard but he nodded nonetheless.

"Yes… my lord."

As the meeting dispersed, Kagaya remained behind, his thoughts distant.

"Gyomei," he said quietly, "walk with me."

His illness had worsened in recent years, and though his time was uncertain, his resolve had not wavered. Whether seeking hope… or simply wishing to see the world a little longer, even he could not say.

But one truth lingered above all others

The balance between humans and demons had begun to shift.

And Kokushibo stood at its center.
