Across the table, Alaric watched the exchange with a mixture of amusement and disbelief. His grandfather had just adopted Elena in less than thirty seconds.

Edward took another sip before looking at his grandson. "You have something to say?"
"No. I'm good."
"Good?"
Alaric frowned. "I didn't say anything."
"You were about to." The old man returned his attention to breakfast. "And I chose to save us both the trouble."
Elena nearly choked on her tea.
Edward pointed toward her without looking up. "You'll fit into this family just fine."
Alaric groaned. "Please don't encourage her."
"I encourage competence wherever I find it."
His eyes briefly shifted toward Elena. The compliment was subtle yet unmistakably evident that he wants to see how she feels about this.
