Chapter 7 - "Control in Motion"

Elias Voss stepped out of his office with the same precision as always—but something about him had changed.

Subtle.

Sharp.

His expression was set in a deep, controlled frown, the kind that didn't need anger to be felt. His jaw was tight, the line of it more defined than usual, his lips pressed into a thin, unreadable line.

But his eyes—

his eyes were different.

They moved.

Constantly.

Scanning.

Searching.

The moment he stepped onto the floor, the atmosphere shifted. Conversations lowered. Movements slowed. Employees straightened instinctively as he passed.

Elias gave a slight nod—nothing more—and stepped inside without breaking stride.

The door closed behind him with a soft, muted sound.

Silence.

That was the first thing he restored.

Elias adjusted his cufflink the moment he sat, a small, precise habit—straightening what was already straight. Then his hand moved to his watch, aligning it perfectly against his wrist.

Order.

Everything had its place.

"residence, sir?" the driver asked.

"Drive."

A pause.

"…Yes, sir."

Elias leaned back slightly, his posture still perfect, his gaze shifting to the tinted window beside him. The city moved outside—busy, loud, unpredictable.

None of it reached him.

Inside the car—

everything obeyed.

His phone vibrated once in his hand. He glanced at the screen, scanned the message in seconds, and replied just as quickly.

Short.

Direct.

Final.

He didn't waste words.

Didn't repeat himself.

Didn't explain.

People adjusted to him.

Not the other way around.

"Move the Tokyo meeting to tomorrow," he said without looking up.

"I'll inform them, sir."

"And cancel anything unnecessary."

"…Define unnecessary, sir?"

Elias's gaze lifted slightly.

Cold.

Sharp.

"You'll know."

The driver didn't speak again.

He never did after that tone.

Silence returned.

Elias's fingers tapped once against his knee—just once—before stilling again. Another small habit. A release of something contained.

He didn't fidget.

He recalibrated.

His gaze returned to the window, watching the reflection of himself faintly against the dark glass.

Perfect composure.

Perfect control.

That was who he was.

That was what he built.

Nothing entered his world without permission.

Nothing stayed without purpose.

Nothing—

disrupted him.

His jaw tightened slightly.

Because something had.

Uninvited.

Uncontrolled.

Unacceptable.

Elias shifted slightly in his seat, his hand moving again—this time adjusting his sleeve, smoothing a line that didn't need smoothing.

Another reset.

Another attempt to restore order.

But it didn't settle.

It stayed.

A thought.

Unwanted.

Persistent.

Red.

His eyes darkened slightly.

No.

Not the color.

Her.

Catherine.

The name surfaced sharper than it should have.

Catherine Vale.

The way she sat.

The way she spoke.

The way she looked at him—

like none of it mattered.

Elias's expression hardened instantly.

His fingers stilled.

The calm inside the car didn't reach him anymore.

Because she had.

A stranger.

Walking into his office like she belonged.

Ignoring his authority.

Ignoring his rules.

And then leaving—

like he was the one dismissed.

His jaw tightened again, sharper this time.

"How," he muttered under his breath.

Not a question.

A demand.

His gaze dropped slightly, unfocused for just a second—not on the city, not on the car, but somewhere else entirely.

Replaying.

Analyzing.

Breaking it down.

She had to be something.

Someone.

No one walked into his world like that.

No one.

Elias leaned forward slightly, his tone shifting again—colder now.

"Get me a full internal review," he said.

"Yes, sir."

"I want every employee cleared. Every system checked."

"Immediately."

A pause.

"…Yes, Mr. Voss."

Elias leaned back again.

But this time—

there was no calm.

Only tension.

Only control being forced back into place.

Because for the first time in a long time—

something had stepped into his world…

and walked out of it—

without asking.

And Elias Voss—

hated that more than anything.
