Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Quiet Glances

The lecture hall was already filling when Kabir walked in.

He didn't rush. He never did.

There was a calmness in the way he placed his notes on the desk, in the way he adjusted his glasses, in the brief pause he took before looking at the room as a whole—like he was gathering it into order before beginning.

Students settled slowly, voices fading into small pockets of silence.

And then Dev arrived.

Not loud. Not late enough to draw attention. Just present in a way that felt… distinct, even in a crowd.

Kabir noticed him without meaning to.

He always did.

Dev took a seat a little off to the side, not in the front row where the most eager students sat, not at the back where attention could be avoided. Somewhere in between—quietly visible, quietly unreachable.

Kabir looked away first.

A professional habit.

At least, that's what he told himself.

He began the lecture.

His voice was steady, familiar in its rhythm. Concepts filled the room—structured, clear, controlled. He moved through them with ease, as he always did.

But somewhere beneath that order, there was a subtle disruption he didn't acknowledge.

Every so often, Kabir's eyes would sweep across the room.

And without fail, they would find Dev.

Dev wasn't doing anything unusual. He wasn't trying to be seen. He was just listening—sometimes writing, sometimes still, sometimes looking up at exactly the wrong moment.

Or the right one.

The first time their eyes met, it was brief.

Kabir paused half a second too long before continuing his sentence.

Dev looked down almost immediately.

But Kabir noticed the hesitation.

And that was the problem.

Because after that, Kabir became aware of it.

Aware of the timing.

Aware of when Dev looked up.

Aware of when he didn't.

Aware of his own attention shifting in ways it shouldn't.

He continued the lecture anyway.

As he always did.

But now there was a second layer running beneath his words—something unspoken, something carefully contained.

At one point, Kabir turned toward the board to write a formula. When he looked back, Dev was already watching him.

This time, neither of them reacted immediately.

A second stretched.

Then another.

Kabir turned away first.

Not abruptly.

But deliberately.

As if it meant nothing.

As if it should mean nothing.

The class moved on. Pens scratched paper. Chairs shifted. A few students whispered.

Normal life continued around them.

But Kabir felt it differently now.

Not louder.

Just closer.

When the lecture ended, students began to gather their things, the room slowly dissolving into noise again.

Kabir stayed at the front for a moment longer than necessary, reviewing his notes.

And when he finally looked up—

Dev was still there.

Not approaching.

Not leaving.

Just existing in that quiet space between departure and decision.

Kabir lowered his gaze again.

Not because he had to.

But because for a brief moment, looking felt heavier than not looking.

And neither of them said a word.

Not yet.
