Chapter 14 - CHAPTER 14:The king’s burden

The king stood frozen, unable to comprehend what was unfolding before him. Confusion clouded his mind, and for a brief moment, he did not know what to do.

Then suddenly—his instincts took over.

With a swift motion, he drew his sword and leapt down into the chaos. His blade flashed like lightning, cutting through the enemy ranks. One after another, warriors fell before him. The sharpness of his strikes and the ferocity in his eyes made even the bravest soldiers hesitate to approach him.

Only then did the truth reveal itself—

Badra had united the minor kingdoms and launched a devastating assault.

At that critical moment, Parthiban charged forward, shielding the king and striking down enemies who came too close. Around them, innocent civilians were mercilessly slaughtered. The sight ignited an uncontrollable rage within the king.

And then… Badra appeared.

A fierce clash erupted between Badra and the king. Steel collided with steel as the battlefield trembled under their might. The king attacked relentlessly, his blows overwhelming Badra, leaving him struggling to defend himself.

But then—something changed.

The king suddenly coughed out blood.

Badra's lips curled into a sinister smile.

"You never realized it, did you?" he said coldly. "The food you consumed… was poisoned. Your end is near. Soon, you will join your people in death."

With those words, Badra raised his sword, aiming for the king's neck—

But before the strike could land, a blade flashed through the air.

Badra's head fell to the ground.

Standing behind him was none other than Paarivendhan.

Without wasting a moment, he carried the wounded king away to a chamber. The king, now weak and fading, spoke with urgency.

"I cannot live any longer… If they find you here, danger will follow you and your land. This is no ordinary war. Killing Badra alone will not end it…"

His words carried a deeper meaning—one Paarivendhan could not ignore.

"Take care of the smaller kingdoms," Paarivendhan replied.

"Parthiban is holding them off," the king said.

Understanding the gravity of the situation, Paarivendhan made a difficult decision. He took the king's child—along with a mysterious sword and a sacred egg—and carried them to the riverbank. There, he placed them in a small boat and sent them away with a boatman.

But the boatman was no ordinary man—it was the chief minister himself.

Even he had unknowingly consumed poisoned food.

Halfway through the journey, he began vomiting blood and collapsed into the river, dying silently as the boat drifted away into the unknown…

Meanwhile, Paarivendhan and Parthiban returned to the battlefield. They crushed the remaining enemies, sending the heads of the rival kings rolling.

Yet a question lingered—

Why had the king sent his own child away… even after Badra's death?

Before they could find an answer, the king's final words echoed—

"Leave this place… both of you…"

And with that, he collapsed, drawing his last breath.

Veerendirar was no more.

Grief consumed them both. Though Badra and the enemy kings were dead, the war did not cease. The enemy forces continued fighting relentlessly.

That was when they realized—

A far greater evil had entered the land.

A monstrous being, wielding dark and mysterious powers.

Sensing the danger, Paarivendhan and Parthiban took the king's body and left for Zimbar. There, they performed his final rites with heavy hearts.

Days passed in sorrow. They were unaware of what was happening in the kingdom.

Then one day, as they ventured into the forest, a mysterious sage appeared before them.

"Where are you headed?" he asked. "To uncover the truth in the royal court?"

Before they could answer, he continued—

"First, find the king's child. The heir lies in the southern direction."

And just as suddenly as he appeared, he vanished.

Realizing the importance of his words, they made a decision—

Their first task was to find the lost heir.

And so, they journeyed south.

To this day, no one knows what became of them. Their disappearance remains a mystery.

Meanwhile, a new ruler rose to power—

Keechakan.

The son of Badra.

Raised in secrecy by an unknown figure, he ascended the throne and took control of the land.

But who raised him…?

Even Veerendirar had known the truth before his death.

"The empire will fall…" the sage Rudran had once warned.

Those words haunted Rudran endlessly.

Sleep abandoned him as questions consumed his mind.

Who was behind all this?

Ponni noticed his restless state.

"Why do you stay awake like this?" she asked gently. "Do not let your thoughts trouble you. Time will answer every question."

She rested his head on her lap, gently stroking his hair until he fell asleep.

The next day, Rudran wandered into the forest and found a beautiful, enchanting flower. Its fragrance was mesmerizing, its colors almost magical. Thinking it would make Ponni happy, he brought it back to her.

But her reaction surprised him.

She smiled—but not at the flower.

Seeing his confusion, she said softly,

"No gift can match the joy I feel now… because a new prince is about to be born in this kingdom."

Rudran's eyes lit up with overwhelming happiness.

The entire kingdom rejoiced.

Yet that night, as he gazed at the moon, unease returned.

"No queen in this kingdom has survived childbirth for the past two generations…" he confessed, his voice trembling. "I can live without a child… but not without you."

Tears filled his eyes.

Ponni held him close and whispered,

"Nothing will happen to me. We will live together—with our child—under this very moon."

Her words comforted him, and he finally found peace.

Time passed, and Rudran cared for her with unmatched devotion.

Then, one fateful day—

Her labor began.

Fear gripped Rudran as he waited outside.

Moments felt like eternity.

And then—

A cry echoed through the palace.

"A princess is born!"

Relief and joy overwhelmed him.

"And the queen?" he asked anxiously.

"She is safe."

The kingdom erupted in celebration.

Holding his daughter for the first time, Rudran felt a happiness beyond words.

But even in that joy… a shadow lingered.

A mystery yet to unfold.

And a darkness… waiting in the distance.
