Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: Animal Law

A month had passed since the Krusty Krab's grand opening.

Business was thriving. The restaurant had gained steady popularity, especially after Kevin introduced Bacon Pancakes and Spinach Puffs. To keep up with demand, he had hired two additional cooks and two new waitresses.

With the expanded team, the Krusty Krab now operated with two shifts and stayed open longer from 10 AM until 8 PM. The atmosphere was lively, and the staff was slowly becoming a tight-knit group.

Kevin had also settled into his new house.

Holli had officially moved in, turning the once-empty two-story home into a warm, lived-in space filled with sex and romance. The backyard pool had become one of their favorite spots to relax.

That afternoon, Kevin stood by the poolside, watching his jellyfish. The twelve eggs had grown into healthy adults, their translucent bells gently pulsing as they floated in the large custom tanks he had set up. He fed them small portions of mashed seaweed and plankton, smiling as they responded to the food.

His mind, however, was elsewhere. The past few days had brought new problems.

One afternoon, while checking inventory in his office, Kevin noticed something worrying. The supply of fresh eggs for the restaurant was becoming inconsistent. He called his usual supplier and was met with bad news.

"Sorry, Mr. Harlan," the voice on the line said. "The farm we sourced from, Tweedy Farm, has been shut down by the authorities. The owner's husband is in jail, and the farm is going bankrupt. We're scrambling to find a new source."

Kevin frowned. "What happened?"

The supplier sighed. "The chickens there became sentient. Turns out the owners were using them without consent for mass egg production. Once the chickens gained sentience, they reported the whole operation to the police. It's a big scandal now. In this world, once an animal reaches sentience, they're treated as full beings, same rights as toons or humans. You can't just farm them like that anymore. The wife, Melisha Tweedy, is trying to sell the farm, but no one wants it because of the bad reputation."

Kevin leaned back in his chair, processing the information. He had known this world had toon animals, but the idea that eating meat or using sentient creatures for farming was heavily regulated was new to him.

Kevin had looked up the official law behind it: The Sentience Protection Act of 1987. Passed by the Nexus Collective after several high-profile cases, the law stated that any animal demonstrating clear sentience speech, reasoning, or self-awareness was granted full legal personhood.

Exploiting sentient beings for labor, food, or products without consent was now strictly illegal and punishable by heavy fines or imprisonment.

It made sense in a world where toon animals could talk and think, but it also created real supply chain issues for restaurants like his.

He also did some quick research on his computer about the farm and sure enough the Tweedy Farm was indeed up for sale, a large plot of land with barns, coops, and fields, but heavily stigmatized. Melisha Tweedy was practically begging online for buyers, offering it at a steep discount.

Another problem appeared the same day.

His honey supplier called, sounding stressed. "Mr. Harlan, we're having major delays. There's a huge lawsuit going on in court right now, the bees are suing the honey industry for unfair labor practices and exploitation. Production has been halted across half the federation while the courts sort it out. We don't know when we'll be able to deliver again."

Kevin pinched the bridge of his nose. "Any alternatives?"

"We're looking, but everything's backed up. Honey is suddenly harder to get than gold."

First eggs, now honey. Two key ingredients were becoming problematic at the worst possible time.

On top of that, there was growing unrest in the country after the chaotic events in Metro City. The public broadcast of Syndrome's gruesome death and the Incredibles' battle had sparked heated debates about the Superhero Registration Act. Some supported the heroes, others feared the chaos they brought. The tension was palpable even in Toontownsville.

Kevin sighed, staring at the graceful jellyfish. "Things are getting complicated…"

He fed the last portion, then walked back into the house. He sat down at the living room table, opened his System panel, and checked his progress.
