Minutes after Dex and Lumia left the site of the massacre, and after the last remaining ember of the phoenix fire that consumed Commander Garrick's armor had finally died out, the Falus Forest stood in a state of temporary stupor. The air in that spot was still densely saturated with the stench of burning flesh, molten steel, and ionized ozone resulting from the violent mana discharge. Dex walked in the lead, carving a path through the dense shrubs, believing he was the sole victor in a small, enclosed execution ground.
His mind was still processing the events of the battle, and he expected, as is customary in the laws of nature, that the usual sounds of the forest would gradually return to fill the void once the immediate threat had passed. He waited to hear the chirping of the giant nocturnal insects that lived among the trunks, the cawing of the fierce three-eyed crows that always gathered around the scent of corpses, or even the rustling of the cold wind toying with the branches of the tall trees.
But what happened was the exact opposite of life.
Suddenly, simultaneously, and terrifyingly, lacking any logical progression, every sound in the forest ceased.
It wasn't a normal stillness, like the one preceding a storm or rainfall. Rather, it was a heavy, absolute "acoustic void," as if a thick, invisible, insulating layer of lead or dense magic had suddenly been draped over the entire area from the sky to swallow every sound vibration. Even the sound of Dex's boots stepping on dry leaves seemed muffled, as if he were walking underwater.
Then came the physical change. The air, which moments ago had been hot, dry, and suffocating from the core's energy and the battle, experienced a sudden and sharp drop in temperature, twenty degrees Celsius all at once. It wasn't a cool breeze; it was a thermal plunge that forcibly sapped the warmth from bodies. This violent shift caused the sweat dripping from Dex's forehead and neck to turn in seconds into a cold, clammy, icy layer resembling the touch of death. Even the specks of dust and ash still suspended and dancing in the air seemed to freeze in place, refusing to fall or move, suspended in this unnatural void.
Dex stopped abruptly, instinctively raising his hand to the hilt of his unused dagger. The stench of human death and burning blood that filled the place vanished completely, as if a giant fan had blown it away, replaced by a different odor... a suffocating, pungent, and terrifying scent that struck the deepest primal instincts in the human brain. It was a very ancient smell, resembling rusty metal and spoiled blood, mixed with the stench of fur soaked in stagnant swamp water, and freshly dug damp earth meant for burying corpses.
It wasn't the scent of an ordinary monster. Dex realized this instantly. It was the absolute scent of an "apex predator"; the entity that sits at the very top of the food chain, fearing nothing, yet feared by everything.
Dex quickly turned toward Lumia, expecting either a sarcastic remark, perhaps an admiring glance at his recent victory, or even a logical question about this climate shift. But the words dried in his throat and the blood froze in his veins when he saw her.
Lumia stood completely rigid in her place, like a statue carved from transparent ice. Her already pale skin lost every remaining speck of color, turning as white as dead paper. But the true horror lay in her eyes. Her pupils, which had been silver and clear as a mirror minutes prior, began to undergo a grotesque transformation. The pupils dilated frantically until the whites of her eyes almost completely vanished, and a crimson red, the color of pure, saturated blood, invaded her irises, turning her eyes into two pools of glowing, pure blood in the dark. She was shivering with a slight, rapid tremor, not from the biting cold that struck the area, but rather in response to the frequencies and ripples of cosmic energy that only beings deeply connected to the essence of the world and the fabric of the void could hear and feel.
"Dex..." Lumia whispered. Her voice was strangled, raspy, and entirely unfamiliar, as if a massive, invisible hand was wrapping around her throat and squeezing her vocal cords. "The earth... the earth is crying."
"What are you saying, Lumia?" Dex asked with extreme caution, taking a single step toward her and placing his broad hand on her slender shoulder to gently shake her and bring her back to her senses. The moment he touched her, he felt an unnatural coldness, a harsh chill radiating from her body as if she were a block of ice from a dead continent.
"It's screaming... The roots below are trembling in terror... The free mana in the air is fleeing and unraveling..." Lumia muttered in disjointed words, her lips trembling, and her red eyes fixed on a dark, unknown point deep in the dense forest ahead of them, a point where Dex saw nothing but darkness. "Something is coming... Something that doesn't belong to the natural cycle of life... It's swallowing the light... It's a 'hole' moving through the fabric of the forest."
Before Dex could analyze her cryptic words or grasp the magnitude of the disaster she was speaking of, he felt the vibration.
It wasn't a geological earthquake, nor a tremor caused by tectonic plate movement. They were rhythmic, heavy, and measured pulsations.
Bam...
The solid ground beneath his feet shook violently, as if a mountain-sized steel hammer had struck the planet's crust directly. Small pebbles and dead branches began bouncing off the ground, dancing to the shockwave.
Bam...
The second strike was much closer, and the time interval between it and the first was agonizingly long, indicating the sheer size of a single stride. The giant trees surrounding them, iron oak trees towering hundreds of meters high, which had stood resilient for thousands of years, looking like eternal pillars holding up the sky, visibly began to lean and groan with the sound of splintering wood under the weight of atmospheric pressure and invisible mana preceding this creature.
Dex looked up, only to see a sight that made his heart stop. The forest's large birds of prey, which had been sheltering in their high nests among the dense leaves, began plummeting like dead stones. They fell by the dozens, hitting the ground around them with a muffled thud. They weren't wounded, nor were they struck by magic; they died in mid-air before touching the ground, their hearts simply stopping from absolute terror, their nervous systems failing to endure the pressure of the approaching aura.
In that decisive moment, clarity struck Dex's mind, and he grasped the full, horrifying truth. This noise, this spiritual pressure crushing the will to live, was not emitted by an imperial army, nor by a herd of high-ranking magical beasts.
These were the footsteps of a "single entity."
An entity possessing such colossal physical mass and mana pressure that merely its casual walking altered the geography of the place, killed weaker creatures just by being present, and forced nature itself into submission.
The instinct of the "prisoner" awakened in the depths of Dex's soul. That raw, animalistic instinct honed by blood, the instinct that had warned him of every danger, enabling him to survive serial killers and bullies for fifteen years in the darkest of prisons. This instinct, which had never failed him, was now offering no escape plan, no battle strategy, nor was it searching for a weak point. It was screaming in his mind with a deafening voice, a voice full of despair and absolute surrender:
"Do not fight... for a sword will not even scratch its shadow. Do not hide... for its scent detects the soul. Just kneel... and pray to a god you've never worshipped that its phantom passes without noticing your wretched existence."
