Chapter 175 - 175: The World Tree's Nectar

The silence in the Chamber of Stillness was so heavy it pressed against the eardrums, a silence broken by nothing but the faint, monotonous mechanical hum of the gray sustaining crystals slowly absorbing the life of Lord Marcus Williams. In the midst of this deadly quiet, Dex drew a deep and troubled breath.

When he drew his hand back, his fingers were coiled with extraordinary care around a small crystal vial no larger than his thumb. Yet to Dex, this small flask was heavier than all the mountains of the continent combined. It appeared as though he held the heart of a pulsing star between his palms. The liquid trapped within it was by no measure ordinary, it had no single fixed color, but rippled and danced in a ceaseless internal reaction, shifting between liquid gold that recalled the rays of a pure dawn sun, and gleaming silver resembling the light of a full moon reflected on a still lake.

This vial was the Sacred Nectar, the extract of the legendary World Tree. It was the fruit of their brutal and bloody ordeal in the depths of forbidden Falus Forest. In a swift flash, Dex recalled the tearing fangs, the ancient magical traps, and the nights he had nearly lost his mind and his soul. A price of much blood spilled and many lives extinguished, solely to obtain this liquid. The vial contained only a few drops, three drops, yet each one of them weighed, literally, the life of an emperor, and carried enough energy to revive an entire dead forest.

The moment Dex's fingers touched the magical cork wrapped in preservation runes, he hesitated for an instant. Was he truly ready to release this power? He resolved the matter, and with a light circular motion, removed the stopper.

There was no deafening explosion, no blinding light, yet the change was radical and immediate in a way that surpassed all physical description. The moment the vial opened, the atmospheric environment of the room changed completely in under a second. A sweet, penetrating, and incredibly deep fragrance spread through the cold, sterile, funereal vault. It resembled the scent of primeval forests after a heavy rainstorm on the first days of spring, the scent of moist fertile earth, and heavenly flowers that bloom once every thousand years.

The fragrance was saturated with raw life, a primal and pure vital energy of such intensity that the dead gray crystals hanging on the walls, which had been programmed to absorb energy, began to glow and pulse with a faint green light from within, as though inanimate matter itself was responding to Mother Nature's call and attempting to survive. The dry, dead air became saturated with a refreshing moisture, as though the wind of the outside world had pierced tons of rock to reach them.

"What absolute power..." Lumia whispered, stepping back a small pace, her silver eyes widening in a rare astonishment. Even she felt her own cosmic mana pathways revive and tremble the moment she inhaled this fragrance. "This is no magic, Dex... this is the First Principle of material existence."

Dex leaned down, oblivious to everything around him, his face very close to his father's pale and black-veined face. Their breaths mingled, his and his father's intermittent, dying gasps.

"This is not merely medicine, Father..." Dex whispered in a low voice laced with both pleading and hope simultaneously. "This is the beginning of your return. This is the declaration of war you have been waiting for."

With a hand trembling slightly, not from fear of failure, but from the intensity of his emotional state and the gravity of the moment, Dex tilted the glowing vial above Marcus's lips. The rippling liquid gathered at the edge of the glass and formed a single droplet. A golden droplet, heavy and dense as molten mercury from divine crafting. It appeared to resist falling, defying gravity for a second, before finally separating in a slow motion to fall with exquisite precision between Marcus's dry and cracked lips, disappearing into the darkness of his open mouth.

Dex and Lumia waited, time appearing to stop completely in that moment. Nothing happened in the first three seconds. The body did not shudder, and it did not gasp.

But the effect of the World Tree's Nectar was far more elevated and deep than the violent reactions of chemical medicines. The Nectar was not attacking the poison in a grinding battle, it was restoring order to chaos. With extreme slowness, and from the center outward, something astonishing began to unfold before their eyes, a medical miracle.

The first thing to react was the gloomy black color in the swollen veins on Marcus's neck and face. Their advance stopped immediately, as though an invisible wall had struck them. Then, as though an invisible army of light had arrived at the losing battlefield, the blackness began to withdraw and retreat. Millimeter by millimeter, the black veins began to fade and lose their darkness, gradually replaced by a pale blue, the natural color of exhausted human blood vessels.

Dex's Phoenix Sight was still active, and he saw what was happening within. The toxic black mana of Beelzebub's Tear, which had been strangling and compressing the SS-rank mana core, began to erode and dissolve. It was not burning in fire; it was dissipating because the new life energy that had entered the body was so pure, dense, and sacred that a demonic curse could not endure mere coexistence in the same spatial vessel with it. The Nectar was enveloping the dying core in a layer of golden light, repairing its cracks, and granting it the pure fuel it had been lacking throughout six months of self-immolation.

A barely visible flush, almost imperceptible, of pale pink appeared in Marcus's deathly pale cheeks. The muscles of his jaw, stiffened from the internal pain he had been enduring in silence, relaxed.

Suddenly, Marcus's broad chest moved. It was not the automatic, fitful movement of before. His entire chest rose, and he drew a long, deep, slightly faltering breath, like a drowning man who had just broken the water's surface after two minutes of sinking. He drew the clean air saturated with the Nectar's fragrance into the deepest point of his withered lungs, then exhaled it very slowly and with an audible sound.

"Haaaaaah..."

That exhalation was his first genuinely comfortable and real breath since he had fallen poisoned. It was not mere air leaving his body, it was the exhalation of a powerful man from whose chest a mountain had at last been lifted, a mountain that had been pressing against his ribs and grinding his bones. His thin eyelids moved with extreme slowness, and his dust-covered lashes trembled, as though he were trying to wake from a dark and cold nightmare that had lasted for long centuries. His features showed a slight discomfort from the attempt to return to consciousness, but he did not open his eyes fully. His will wanted to wake, but his body was crying for rest. He needed sleep now more than at any other time, the sleep of genuine and deep healing, not the coma of toxic death.

Dex reclosed the vial's stopper at lightning speed, sealing it tightly before the Nectar's fragrance could spread further and alter the vault's very atmospheric composition, which might draw the attention of any mage passing through the upper floors. He wiped the cold sweat gathered on his brow from the force of the tension with the back of his hand, and looked at his father with a long gaze carrying a silent and dark triumph.

"It worked..." Dex said in a rough voice, watching the steady rise and fall of his father's chest. "The body accepted the antidote. The core has actually begun absorbing the World Tree Nectar's energy and repairing its primary pathways. We have halted the system's collapse. Now, it is merely a matter of time before the foundation is fully built."
