CHAPTER 56 — THE MEMORY THAT DID NOT BELONG TO HER
Keira stopped mid-step.
Not because something blocked her path.
But because something inside her mind had opened without permission.
Keira
"…I saw it again," she whispered.
Kelvin turned immediately.
"What did you see?"
Keira blinked slowly.
"…a place I've never been."
Nancy stepped closer instantly.
"…Describe it."
Keira hesitated.
Then spoke carefully:
"A white room… but not empty."
A pause.
"Two versions of someone standing inside it."
Kelvin felt his chest tighten.
"…Two versions of who?"
Keira looked at him.
And for the first time—
her answer was certain.
"You."
Silence dropped hard.
Kelvin
"…That's not possible," Kelvin said quickly.
But his voice didn't sound confident anymore.
Because something inside him reacted.
Like recognition.
Not memory.
Instinct.
Kael presence strengthens
The air shifted.
Kael appeared more clearly now at the corridor edge.
Not fully solid.
But no longer shadow.
"She is accessing pre-fragmentation memory layers."
Kelvin frowned.
"…Pre-what?"
Kael answered calmly:
"Before your identity was divided into functional outputs."
Nancy realization
Nancy stepped forward slightly.
"…So she's accessing root memory?"
Kael nodded once.
"Yes."
Keira suddenly held her head.
"…It hurts," she whispered.
Not pain like injury.
Pain like truth overload.
Laura steps in
Laura moved closer to Keira.
"Don't push too fast," she said softly.
Keira looked at her.
"…You're not afraid of this?"
Laura paused.
"…I stopped being afraid when reality stopped behaving normally."
System reaction
Kelvin's phone lit up violently again:
ROOT MEMORY ACCESS DETECTED
WARNING: ORIGINAL SOURCE LAYER COMPROMISED
Kelvin stepped back.
"…Original source?"
Nancy didn't answer immediately.
Because even she looked unsure now.
Keira vision deepens
Keira's breathing slowed.
Her eyes unfocused.
"…There was someone else there," she whispered.
Kelvin went still.
"What do you mean?"
Keira continued:
"Before the two versions of you… there was someone watching."
Silence.
Even Kael paused.
Kelvin shock
"…Watching?"
Keira nodded faintly.
"He looked like both of you… but neither."
Nancy whispered:
"…That shouldn't be accessible."
Kael turned slightly toward Nancy.
"It is accessible when the system begins full deconstruction."
Reality flicker
The corridor shifted slightly.
Not visually.
Structurally.
For a second—
Kelvin saw the white room Keira described.
And inside it—
two Kelvins.
Standing still.
Watching each other.
Kelvin panic rising
"…No," Kelvin muttered.
"I've never been there."
Kael responded immediately:
"That is exactly the problem."
Kelvin turned sharply.
"What is that supposed to mean?"
Kael stepped forward slightly.
"Your certainty is not proof of origin."
Keira emotional fracture
Keira looked at Kelvin again.
"…Why does part of me feel like I miss something I don't understand?"
Kelvin froze.
"…Miss what?"
She shook her head slightly.
"I don't know."
A pause.
"But it feels like you were different before I met you."
Nancy system warning
Nancy's expression tightened.
"…This is accelerating faster than expected."
Laura looked at Kelvin.
"…He's not just splitting anymore," she said quietly.
"…he's being reconstructed."
Kael final statement
Kael looked at all of them.
Calm.
Certain.
Unmoving.
"The system is not creating new identities."
A pause.
"It is restoring what was separated incorrectly."
Kelvin whispered:
"…Restoring what?"
Kael answered:
"The original structure."
Final moment
Keira stepped slightly closer to Kelvin again.
Not afraid.
Not stable.
Just drawn.
"…If I was part of you," she whispered,
"…why do I feel like I'm only starting to exist now?"
Kelvin didn't answer.
Because for the first time—
he didn't trust his own silence.
