Chapter 66 - The Child Behind The Heart (Part - II)

The light exploded.

For one breathless moment, there was no Kaalvan.

No broken temple.

No collapsing stone.

No Arvind.

No Vaidehi.

There was only white light.

And inside that light—

A child's voice.

"Don't let me disappear."

Tez opened his eyes.

He was standing in a place he had never seen.

Or perhaps he had seen it once.

Long ago.

Before Suryanagari.

Before the fire.

Before he had learned what loss meant.

The ground beneath his feet was smooth black stone.

Above him hung a sky filled with stars.

But there was no moon.

No sun.

No wind.

Only thousands of stars moving slowly across a dark sky.

Vaidehi stood beside him.

She looked frightened.

"Tez?"

He turned.

"You're here."

"I don't know where we are."

A voice answered from behind them.

"You have been here before."

They turned.

The third child was standing there.

But he no longer looked like a child.

His face was changing.

For a moment he looked twelve.

Then fifteen.

Then twenty.

Then he looked exactly like Tez.

Then older.

Then younger.

His face could not settle into one age.

Vaidehi stepped backward.

"What are you?"

The boy looked at her.

"I am what remained."

"Of what?"

The boy's eyes moved toward Tez.

"Of him."

Tez felt cold.

"Stop speaking in riddles."

The boy smiled sadly.

"You always hated riddles."

A strange pain passed through Tez's chest.

"You knew me."

"I knew you before you knew yourself."

Tez stepped closer.

"Then tell me my name."

The boy's expression changed.

"Your name?"

"Yes."

The boy looked toward the stars.

"You want the name they gave you."

He pointed toward Tez.

"But I remember the name you had before they gave you one."

The stars suddenly began moving faster.

One by one, they formed symbols.

Three circles.

The same symbol Maitreyi had called forbidden.

Tez stared at it.

"Who made that symbol?"

The boy answered:

"We did."

"Who are we?"

The boy looked at Vaidehi.

"Three children."

Vaidehi's eyes filled with confusion.

"Three?"

The boy nodded.

"You, Tez... and me."

A memory struck her.

A garden.

Three children.

A stone.

Her own small hand touching Tez's.

Another hand touching hers.

A boy laughing.

She heard herself as a child.

"We will never leave each other."

Then another voice.

A voice belonging to the boy.

"Never."

Vaidehi covered her mouth.

"I remember."

Tez looked at her.

"What?"

She whispered:

"We made a promise."

The boy smiled.

"Yes."

Tez looked at him.

"What promise?"

The boy's smile disappeared.

"To come back."

The world went silent.

Then the stars vanished.

---

Tez opened his eyes again.

He was lying on the stone floor of Kaalvan.

Vaidehi was beside him.

Arvind was kneeling nearby.

Devadatta stood with his sword drawn.

Maitreyi was staring at the ceiling.

Aarav and Bhaskar were trying to clear fallen stones from the passage.

The third child stood near the broken Heart.

But something was different.

He was no longer glowing.

He looked ordinary.

Almost human.

Tez slowly stood.

"Who is he?"

Arvind looked at him.

Tez's voice became harder.

"I asked you a question."

Arvind lowered his eyes.

"I know who he is."

"Then tell me."

"I cannot."

Tez stepped toward him.

"Why?"

"Because you are not ready."

Tez laughed bitterly.

"Not ready?"

He pointed toward the collapsing city.

"My village was destroyed. My memories were stolen. I was hunted by Vardhan. I crossed ancient cities. I watched people die. I learned that my father was alive after believing him dead."

His voice broke.

"And every time I ask the truth, someone tells me I am not ready."

Arvind's eyes filled with pain.

"I was trying to protect you."

"You have been protecting me from the truth for my entire life."

"No," Arvind said quietly.

"I have been protecting the truth from you."

Tez froze.

Arvind looked at him.

"There is a difference."

Before Tez could answer, the ground shook.

A huge crack opened across the chamber.

The broken Heart tilted.

Its crystal surface began falling apart.

Maitreyi shouted:

"Everyone move!"

They ran.

A section of the ceiling collapsed behind them.

The passage ahead filled with dust.

Arvind grabbed Tez's arm.

"This way!"

Tez pulled free.

"I am not leaving him."

He pointed toward the third child.

The child was still standing beside the Heart.

"Leave me," the child said.

Tez stared.

"Why?"

"Because if I leave, it follows."

"What follows?"

The boy looked behind him.

The darkness had returned.

A black mist was spreading from the broken Heart.

Slowly.

Silently.

It moved like fingers searching through water.

Arvind's face changed.

"Run."

The mist stopped.

Then a voice came from inside it.

"Arvind."

Everyone froze.

The voice was deep.

Old.

It carried no anger.

Only certainty.

"You still hide him."

Arvind stepped forward.

"Leave them."

The Shadow laughed softly.

"You have spent years saying that."

Black mist climbed the walls.

"And every time, you failed."

Arvind raised his sword.

"You will not touch him."

The Shadow answered:

"I already did."

Tez's blood went cold.

Arvind's sword lowered slightly.

The Shadow continued.

"You know what he was before you called him Tez."

Tez turned toward his father.

"Tell me."

Arvind said nothing.

"Tell me!"

The third child spoke.

"He was dying."

Tez looked at him.

The boy continued.

"The night the Shadow came, you were not chosen."

"What happened?"

"You were already dead."

Silence.

Vaidehi stared at the child.

Arvind closed his eyes.

Tez felt the world tilt.

"No."

The child nodded.

"You died."

"No."

"You were a child."

"No!"

"You stopped breathing."

Tez stepped backward.

He suddenly remembered cold hands.

His mother's face.

Devadatta crying.

Vaidehi's mother shouting.

A black shape standing over him.

And a little girl crying:

"Please save him."

Vaidehi gasped.

She remembered it too.

"No..."

The child looked at her.

"You asked."

Vaidehi shook her head.

"I was a child."

"You loved him."

Tears ran down her face.

"I didn't know what I was asking."

"You asked the Shadow to bring him back."

Tez looked at Vaidehi.

She could barely meet his eyes.

"I remember," she whispered.

Her voice broke.

"I remember holding your hand."

She stepped toward him.

"You were not moving."

Tez said nothing.

"I thought you were gone."

She began crying.

"I didn't understand death. I only knew I didn't want you to leave."

The Shadow whispered:

"And I answered."

The black mist moved closer.

Tez felt a terrible pressure in his chest.

His mind filled with flashes.

His small body lying on stone.

His mother's hands shaking.

Arvind screaming.

Devadatta praying.

Vaidehi crying.

And the Shadow bending over him.

A dark finger touching his forehead.

Then—

A heartbeat.

Dhum.

Tez opened his eyes.

He was alive.

But something had changed.

A black mark appeared over his heart.

And the Shadow whispered:

"Come back."

Tez fell to his knees.

Vaidehi rushed toward him.

"Tez!"

He pushed both hands against his chest.

"My heart..."

Arvind knelt beside him.

"I am sorry."

Tez looked at him with tears in his eyes.

"You knew."

Arvind nodded.

"You knew I died."

"Yes."

"You knew she asked the Shadow to save me."

"Yes."

"And you erased my memory."

Arvind could barely speak.

"We had no other choice."

Tez stood.

"You always say that."

He looked toward the broken Heart.

"What happened after I came back?"

Arvind looked at the third child.

The boy answered.

"The Shadow stayed inside you."

Tez's breath stopped.

"No."

"It was weak."

"No."

"It slept."

"No."

"It waited."

The black mark on Tez's palm began burning.

The Shadow whispered from the darkness:

"For you."

Tez suddenly understood why the Shadow had always spoken to him differently.

Why it had called him returned.

Why it knew things no one else could know.

Why the ancient cities reacted to him.

Why the Heart had never truly treated him as a stranger.

He had not been walking toward the Shadow.

The Shadow had been waiting for him.

All his life.

---

A sound came from the far end of the chamber.

Metal against stone.

Everyone turned.

A figure appeared through the dust.

His clothes were torn.

His face was pale.

His eyes were bloodshot.

A dark mark ran from his neck toward his cheek.

Vardhan.

Bhaskar raised his weapon.

"You!"

Vardhan ignored him.

His eyes were fixed on the broken Heart.

"No..."

Maitreyi stepped forward.

"You look afraid."

Vardhan laughed.

It was a broken laugh.

"I am."

He looked at Arvind.

"You knew."

Arvind said nothing.

Vardhan's eyes moved to Tez.

"You never told him."

"Told me what?" Tez demanded.

Vardhan walked closer.

Arvind stepped between them.

"Enough."

Vardhan smiled bitterly.

"You still think you can protect him."

He pointed toward Tez.

"You have no idea what he is."

Tez's anger rose.

"Then tell me."

Vardhan looked at him.

"You think the Shadow wants to destroy the world."

"Yes."

"No."

Vardhan's voice became almost a whisper.

"It wants to remember the world."

Tez frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Vardhan looked toward the broken Heart.

"The Shadow was not born evil."

Maitreyi stared at him.

"Do not lie."

"I am not."

Vardhan's face hardened.

"It was the first memory."

Everyone fell silent.

"The first memory?"

Vardhan nodded.

"Before the Guardians. Before the seven cities. Before the Heart was sealed... there was nothing but darkness."

He looked at Tez.

"Then something remembered that it existed."

His eyes became distant.

"That first memory became the Shadow."

Tez listened.

"The Guardians feared it because memory can create identity. Identity creates desire. Desire creates fear. Fear creates the wish to survive."

Vardhan's voice shook.

"And the Shadow learned the greatest fear of all."

"Death," Tez whispered.

Vardhan nodded.

"That is why I followed it."

Tez looked at him.

"You wanted immortality."

"I wanted my brother back."

For the first time, Vardhan did not sound like an enemy.

He sounded like a broken man.

"I thought if I could preserve his memory, I could preserve him."

He laughed softly.

"But I was wrong."

The black mark on his face pulsed.

"The Shadow showed me what I had become."

Vardhan looked at Tez.

"It doesn't bring people back."

"What does it do?"

"It replaces what is lost."

Tez stared.

Vardhan continued.

"It takes your memories and fills the empty places with itself."

Tez looked at his hands.

"No..."

"That is why your memories were erased."

Arvind closed his eyes.

"If the Shadow could not remember you," he said, "it could not find its way back into you."

Tez's voice was barely audible.

"But it did."

"Yes."

"Then why am I still myself?"

Nobody answered.

The third child did.

"Because she remembered you."

He looked at Vaidehi.

"She called you back."

Vaidehi stared at him.

The child continued:

"The Shadow could give Tez a heartbeat."

"But it could not give him a soul."

Vaidehi's tears fell.

"So what kept him alive?"

The child looked at her.

"You did."

Silence.

Then the Heart gave one final pulse.

Dhum.

A line of white light appeared across its broken surface.

Then another.

Then another.

The seven chains that had snapped moments earlier began reforming.

But they were not chains anymore.

They were lines of light.

They moved toward Tez.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Five.

Six.

Seven.

Each line stopped just before touching him.

The seventh line became a symbol.

A name.

Tez stared at it.

He could not read the ancient letters.

Yet somehow—

He understood them.

His breathing stopped.

Vaidehi looked at him.

"What does it say?"

Tez whispered:

"It is my name."

Arvind's face turned pale.

"No."

Tez looked at him.

"You know it."

Arvind did not answer.

Tez stepped closer.

"What was my name?"

The ancient letters changed.

The symbol became clearer.

Tez read it.

And suddenly—

He remembered.

A woman holding him as an infant.

A man standing beside her.

A little girl holding his finger.

And another boy standing behind them.

His mother was crying.

His father was afraid.

Vaidehi's mother was praying.

And the third child was smiling.

Then his mother whispered:

"If he survives, he cannot remain here."

Arvind answered:

"What will we call him?"

She looked at the infant.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then she touched his forehead.

And spoke a name.

The name before Tez.

The name that had been erased.

Tez gasped.

The memory vanished.

He staggered.

Vaidehi caught him.

"What did you hear?"

Tez looked at her.

His lips trembled.

"I remember my mother saying it."

"What?"

"My name."

Arvind closed his eyes.

Vardhan stepped backward.

Even the third child looked afraid.

Tez whispered the forgotten name.

The moment he said it—

Every lamp in Kaalvan went out.

The black mist stopped moving.

The broken Heart became completely silent.

Then the darkness spoke.

Not from the walls.

Not from the Heart.

Not from the child.

From inside Tez.

"At last."

Tez froze.

The voice continued.

"You remembered."

His eyes widened.

Vaidehi grabbed his hand.

"Tez?"

He could not answer.

The voice spoke again.

"You were never my prisoner."

A cold breath passed through the chamber.

"You were my promise."

The third child looked at Tez.

His face was filled with sorrow.

And then he whispered:

"Brother... now you remember why you came back."

Tez stared at him.

"Why?"

The boy slowly pointed toward the broken Heart.

Behind it, something began to rise.

Not a creature.

Not a man.

Something far older.

A shape made of darkness and light.

A face began forming inside it.

A face that looked exactly like Tez.

But this face was ancient.

Its eyes opened.

And the entire underground city heard the same whisper:

"The First Guardian was not the beginning."

A pause.

Then—

"Tez was."

The ground beneath Kaalvan split open.

Far below them, something answered.

One heartbeat.

Then another.

Then thousands.

And from the darkness beneath the broken Heart came a sound that none of them had heard before.

A child's laughter.

The same laughter Tez remembered from his forgotten childhood.

The third child smiled.

And said:

"He has awakened."

Tez looked into the darkness.

"Who?"

The boy's smile disappeared.

"The one who gave you back your life."

The darkness opened.

And Tez finally understood the true horror.

The First Shadow had never been trying to enter his world.

It had been waiting for Tez to open the door from the inside.
