Kamar-Taj, Medical Wing
Kaecilius looked like he'd been through a wood chipper.
Bandages wrapped his chest from collarbone to waist. His left arm was immobilized in a sling. A bruise the color of a thundercloud spread from his jawline to his temple. Despite all of it, he was sitting upright on the edge of a medical cot, his expression carrying the particular stubbornness of a man who refused to acknowledge that he was hurt.
Abel pulled up a chair. "What happened?"
"A demon that turns into wind." Kaecilius's voice was flat, clinical. He reported injuries the way other people reported weather. "My attacks passed through it. Shields were useless because wind doesn't collide, it flows around obstacles. Incredibly fast, unpredictable, and nearly impossible to target." He paused. "I wasn't strong enough."
The admission cost him. Abel could see it in the way his jaw tightened.
"A wind demon. On Earth."
"They are fallen angels." The Ancient One's voice came from behind Abel. He turned. She stood in the doorway, hands clasped, her expression carrying the gravity of someone about to deliver a briefing she'd been assembling for days. "Not native-born hellspawn. Former celestial beings who chose to fall. Each retained a fragment of their original power and converted it to a demonic form. The wind demon Aerokon is one of three: wind, earth, and water. All three have pledged allegiance to Blackheart."
"Fallen angels serving Mephisto's son, how ironic," Abel said. "What does Blackheart actually want? He didn't cross into our dimension for sightseeing."
"We believe he's searching for an artifact. Something Mephisto left on Earth, hidden, possibly centuries ago. The intelligence Kaecilius and Mordo gathered suggests Blackheart doesn't know its exact location, only that it exists."
Abel filed that away. An artifact of Mephisto's, hidden on Earth, powerful enough that the heir to Hell's throne would personally cross dimensions to retrieve it.
What kind of artifact would the King of Hell hide on Earth? And why would his own son need to come find it personally?
"Blackheart's power level?" Abel asked.
"Considerable." The Ancient One's voice dropped half a register. "He is Mephisto's creation. In Hell, he is second only to Mephisto himself. He appears to have manifested his true form on Earth through some unique method. Fortunately, like a lot of higher existences, Mephisto will be unable to cross into our dimension due to his considerable power. But even without his father, removing Blackheart will not be simple."
Abel absorbed that. Then: "What do you need from me?"
The Ancient One turned to face him directly.
"Kamar-Taj will handle the demons. Kaecilius and Mordo will continue containment operations worldwide. Your task is different." She paused, choosing her words. "We need to know what Blackheart is searching for. If we can identify the artifact before he finds it, we gain leverage. Perhaps enough to force him off Earth without a direct confrontation."
"That's intelligence work, not combat. I'll need leads."
"You'll have one." The Ancient One's eyes held something Abel couldn't quite read. "This matter is connected to another individual. Blackheart's arrival on Earth has triggered an awakening. There is a man bound by an ancient contract to Mephisto, carrying the power of hellfire within his body. He has been dormant for years, but Blackheart's presence will have roused him."
She paused.
"Follow the knight whose body burns with flame. He will lead you to the answers."
A knight whose body burns with flame.
The image detonated in Abel's memory like a flashbang. A skeleton, wreathed in fire, riding a motorcycle that trailed hellfire across the asphalt. Chains whipping through the air, each link burning white-hot. Eyes like furnaces. A laugh that sounded like the screaming of the damned.
Ghost Rider.
Of course. The Ghost Rider.
The pieces snapped together. Mephisto had created Blackheart. Mephisto had also bound Johnny Blaze, or possibly someone else in this timeline, to the Spirit of Vengeance. Blackheart was searching for his father's secret weapon, an artifact that could give him power to overthrow Mephisto's rule. The Ghost Rider was Mephisto's fail-safe, the guard dog sent to stop exactly this kind of rebellion.
An unfilial son hunting for daddy's secret weapon, only to get put down by daddy's enforcer. Classic family drama, hell-style.
The problem was that the Ghost Rider was wildly dangerous. The Penance Stare didn't discriminate between demons and bystanders. Anyone with sin in their past, which was everyone, was a potential target. Following the Ghost Rider meant staying close enough to track him but far enough to avoid being judged.
Good thing I just learned Apparition. Between that and the Sling Ring, I can keep pace without getting within staring distance.
"I understand," Abel said. "I'll handle the intelligence side. I can't promise results on a specific timeline, but I'll find out what Blackheart is looking for."
"Thank you, Master Abel."
"After this is done, I'll need your help with something of my own."
"Of course. When the Blackheart matter is resolved, we'll discuss it properly."
Abel nodded and opened a portal. Before he stepped through, he glanced back at Kaecilius.
"Heal up. I'll need you sharp when I get back."
Kaecilius's bruised face managed something close to a smile. "I'll be ready."
Abel stepped through. The portal closed.
Silence settled over the medical wing. Kaecilius stared at the space where the portal had been, then looked at the Ancient One.
"Can he really handle this alone?"
"You and Abel have become friends." The Ancient One said it as observation, not question. "I'm glad. But you underestimate him, Kaecilius. Abel is considerably stronger now than when he first came to Kamar-Taj. Against most demons, he has the ability to protect himself or fight outright. And he works better alone."
"Why alone?"
The Ancient One paused. When she spoke again, her voice carried a weight that made Kaecilius straighten.
"Abel's magical tradition contains white magic, which is what he typically uses in our presence. But it also contains significant black magic. Powerful, dangerous, and effective. When he's with allies, he restrains himself. He limits his arsenal to what won't alarm the people around him." She met Kaecilius's eyes. "Alone, he can fight without restraint. He can use everything."
Kaecilius absorbed that in silence. "Black magic."
"The term carries stigma, and deservedly so. Black magic erodes the user's mental state over time. Sorcerers with weaker wills can be consumed by it, twisted into something they never intended to become." The Ancient One's gaze was steady and deliberate. "But the power itself is not inherently evil. It is a tool. The morality lies in the hand that wields it."
She let that settle. Then:
"Among Kamar-Taj's sorcerers, you for exemple have the mental fortitude to study black magic safely. Mordo's temperament is too rigid, too absolute. He sees the world in binaries, and black magic would break him." Her expression softened. "But you, Kaecilius. You have the balance. The nuance. The ability to hold darkness in one hand and light in the other without letting either consume you."
Kaecilius felt something shift in his chest. He'd spent years as one of many at Kamar-Taj. Skilled, respected, but never singled out. Never told he was exceptional. And now the Sorcerer Supreme herself was telling him he had something that even Mordo lacked.
"After the Blackheart crisis is resolved," the Ancient One said, "I will begin teaching you. I hope that between now and then, you will fortify your mind. Black magic is not something to approach carelessly."
Kaecilius bowed his head. "I won't disappoint you, Ancient One."
She studied him for a long, quiet moment. Something flickered across her face, too fast to identify.
Then she turned and left the medical wing without another word.
In the corridor, alone, the Ancient One walked slowly. Her footsteps echoed against stone. Her expression, unseen by anyone, carried the particular sadness of a woman who had just planted a seed and already knew what kind of tree it would become.
Black magic. Erosion. Vulnerability.
I'm giving him a weapon that could save him or destroy him. And I won't be here to see which one it is.
She walked on.
