Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: The Breathing World

Darkness was no longer dark.

It was alive.

Not metaphorically.

Not spiritually.

Not symbolically.

Alive in the most horrifying way imaginable.

---

When Lin Wan opened her eyes again, she realized something impossible.

The world… was breathing.

The walls of the Observation Layer pulsed slowly like enormous blood vessels beneath translucent flesh. Every corridor expanded and contracted in a wet, rhythmic motion, as though the entire structure were a colossal living organ hidden outside reality.

The air itself trembled with heartbeat-like vibrations.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

Each pulse shook the endless halls.

And with every beat, countless shadows along the walls twitched simultaneously.

---

Lin Wan stood motionless.

Or rather—

she forced herself not to move.

Because the moment she awakened, she understood a terrifying truth:

Something here had already noticed her return.

Not the System.

Something older.

Something hidden deeper beneath it.

---

Behind her, Zhang Team Leader's fragmented shadow flickered weakly.

He looked worse than before.

The edges of his form were disintegrating, dissolving into drifting black particles, as though his consciousness were being slowly erased by an invisible force.

Yet his voice remained steady.

Barely.

"We shouldn't be here…"

Lin Wan didn't answer immediately.

Her gaze was fixed ahead.

At the end of the corridor stood a door.

A real door.

Not a projection.

Not a data construct.

Not a simulation generated by the System.

It looked ancient.

Rotting black wood. Rusted iron handle. Countless scratch marks covering its surface, as if thousands of fingernails had desperately clawed at it from the inside.

And worst of all—

the door was breathing too.

---

A slow, wet sound came from behind it.

Something massive shifting in darkness.

Something sleeping.

Or pretending to sleep.

---

"Do you hear that?" Zhang whispered.

Lin Wan nodded slowly.

Children.

Very faint.

Very distant.

Crying.

---

The sound seeped through the cracks beneath the door.

Not ordinary crying.

It sounded layered—

as if countless children from different ages, different eras, different places were all crying together in overlapping echoes.

Some sobbed quietly.

Some screamed in terror.

Some laughed while crying.

And mixed among them was another sound.

Chewing.

Wet.

Slow.

Patient.

---

Lin Wan's scalp turned numb.

Because she suddenly recognized one of the voices.

It belonged to herself.

A much younger version.

A child.

---

The corridor lights flickered violently.

Instantly—

every shadow on the walls stopped moving.

The breathing stopped too.

Complete silence swallowed everything.

Then—

a voice emerged from behind the door.

Soft.

Gentle.

Terrifyingly familiar.

"Lin Wan…"

Her pupils shrank violently.

It sounded exactly like her mother.

---

"You finally came home."

---

The moment the sentence ended, Zhang's shadow exploded with violent distortion.

"DON'T OPEN IT!!"

His scream echoed through the corridor.

But it was already too late.

Because Lin Wan suddenly realized—

her hand was already touching the doorknob.

She had no memory of moving.

None at all.

---

Cold.

The handle felt horrifyingly cold.

Not the temperature of metal.

The temperature of a corpse left underwater for years.

---

Click.

The door slowly opened by itself.

Darkness leaked out.

Not black darkness.

A thick, crimson darkness.

Like flowing blood.

And inside the room—

hung thousands of shadows.

Suspended from the ceiling.

Like corpses on invisible strings.

Every shadow was shaped like a human.

Every shadow was struggling silently.

And every single one…

had Lin Wan's face.

---

Some were children.

Some were elderly.

Some wore hospital gowns.

Some had their throats ripped open.

Some were missing eyes.

Some had no skin.

But all of them were staring directly at her.

Smiling.

---

Lin Wan's breathing stopped completely.

Because she finally understood what the "Observation Layer" truly was.

The System never created replacements.

It harvested possibilities.

Every failed version of a person.

Every discarded timeline.

Every erased outcome.

Nothing was deleted.

Everything remained here.

Alive forever.

---

A wet sound suddenly echoed above her.

Drip.

Something warm landed on her shoulder.

Lin Wan froze.

Slowly—

very slowly—

she looked upward.

And saw it.

---

A gigantic human face was fused into the ceiling.

No—

not fused.

Growing from it.

Its skin stretched across the entire room like rotten biological wallpaper.

Countless human eyes embedded inside the flesh slowly rotated toward her simultaneously.

Some were crying blood.

Some had no pupils.

Some blinked independently.

And at the center of that enormous face—

was a mouth.

A massive vertical mouth extending from ceiling to floor.

Slowly opening.

---

Inside the mouth—

were people.

Still alive.

Packed tightly together inside endless layers of flesh.

Thousands of them.

Breathing.

Twitching.

Whispering.

Trying to crawl out.

---

Then all the eyes moved at once.

Locking onto Lin Wan.

---

The gigantic face smiled.

Its lips split open unnaturally wide.

And finally—

it spoke.

Not with sound.

But directly inside her skull.

---

"Do you know…"

"why the System fears you?"

---

The walls pulsed violently.

The suspended shadows began screaming silently.

And Zhang's fragmented shadow suddenly trembled in horror.

As if he already knew the answer.

---

The thing in the ceiling slowly lowered its face toward Lin Wan.

Closer.

Closer.

Close enough for her to smell the rotting sweetness of its breath.

Then it whispered:

---

"Because you were never human to begin with."
