Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: New Role

The city felt different that night.

Not quieter.

More organized.

Duke walked through the streets of Fes with a new awareness.

Not as an observer.

But as part of something.

That changed everything.

Every movement now had weight.

Every decision had consequence.

He wasn't outside anymore.

He was inside.

When he reached the usual place, the Mentor was already there.

Sitting.

Waiting.

Like always.

"You took longer," the Mentor said.

Duke replied calmly,

"I needed to understand."

The Mentor nodded slightly.

"Good."

A pause.

"Then tell me."

Duke stood still.

"They weren't testing strength," he said.

"They were testing reaction under pressure."

A pause.

"And decision speed."

The Mentor watched him carefully.

"Continue."

"They controlled space," Duke said.

A pause.

"I controlled timing."

Silence.

The Mentor smiled faintly.

"And what does that give you?"

Duke answered,

"Position."

That word stayed in the air.

Position.

Not power.

Not control.

Position.

The Mentor stood up slowly.

"You're starting to understand," he said.

A pause.

"But understanding is not enough."

Duke didn't react.

He already knew.

"You need function," the Mentor added.

Duke asked directly,

"What is my function?"

Silence.

Then the Mentor walked toward him.

Slow.

Measured.

"You observe," he said.

A pause.

"You analyze."

Another pause.

"But now…"

He looked directly at Duke.

"You act."

That changed the dynamic.

Action means risk.

Risk means exposure.

But also—

Progress.

The Mentor handed him a small envelope.

No explanation.

Duke took it.

Opened it.

Inside—

A name.

An address.

And a time.

"That's your first role," the Mentor said.

Duke looked at the paper again.

No details.

No instructions.

Just data.

"What do I do?" Duke asked.

The Mentor replied calmly,

"That's what you need to decide."

Silence.

Because this wasn't a task.

It was a test of function.

Duke folded the paper slowly.

Put it in his pocket.

"Why me?" he asked.

The Mentor answered without hesitation:

"Because you don't follow instructions."

A pause.

"You create them."

t was true.

And dangerous.

Duke left.

No more questions.

No hesitation.

Because now—

The system expected movement.

The location wasn't far.

A quiet street.

Normal buildings.

Nothing unusual.

Which made it important.

Duke arrived early.

Always early.

He observed.

Entrances.

Windows.

Movement.

Patterns.

A man entered the building.

Then another.

Same timing gap.

Same behavior.

Not random.

Duke stayed in shadow.

Watching.

Mapping.

He didn't rush.

Because rushing breaks observation.

Time passed.

Then—

The name appeared.

The person from the envelope.

Walking normally.

Unaware.

Duke focused.

This was the moment.

But the objective wasn't clear.

And that was intentional.

He followed.

Not close.

Not far.

Controlled distance.

The man entered a small café.

Sat alone.

Ordered nothing.

Waited.

That was a signal.

Waiting without purpose… is never random.

Duke entered after him.

Calm.

Invisible.

He sat two tables away.

No eye contact.

No interaction.

Just presence.

Minutes passed.

Then another man joined the target.

Conversation started.

Low voices.

Short sentences.

Exchange.

Small object.

Quick movement.

Hidden.

Duke saw it.

Confirmed it.

This wasn't a meeting.

It was transfer.

Now he understood.

His role wasn't to act randomly.

It was to interpret.

He stood up slowly.

Walked past them.

Close enough to confirm details.

Far enough to stay unnoticed.

Then he left.

No confrontation.

No interference.

Outside, he stopped.

Replaying everything.

Two men.

One exchange.

Hidden object.

Information.

That was the mission.

Duke returned to the Mentor.

Calm.

Focused.

"Well?" the Mentor asked.

Duke answered simply:

"Transfer confirmed."

A pause.

"Two individuals. Coordinated."

Another pause.

"Object unknown."

Silence.

Then the Mentor nodded.

"Good."

Duke looked at him.

"That was the test," he said.

The Mentor smiled slightly.

"No."

A pause.

"That was your introduction."

That changed everything.

Duke understood now.

This wasn't about one mission.

It was about becoming part of the flow.

"You didn't interfere," the Mentor said.

Duke replied,

"It wasn't required."

The Mentor nodded.

"Exactly."

Silence.

Then—

"Now you begin."

Duke stood still.

No emotion.

No doubt.

Because now…

He had a role.

And roles…

Define everything.
