Chapter 3 - Don’t Stand So Close to Me

The villa felt different in the morning.

Not quieter.

Tighter.

Like the air itself had adjusted to something unspoken.

Lin Yue stood in the kitchen, pouring water into a glass she didn't really need.

She hadn't slept properly.

Footsteps came from behind.

Shen Yichen entered, already dressed in a black suit.

Perfect posture. Cold expression. Controlled everything.

Except—

his tie was slightly loose.

Lin Yue noticed immediately.

"You're awake early," he said.

Not a question.

Just acknowledgment.

"I didn't sleep," she replied.

Silence.

The coffee machine clicked softly.

Then—

"You should adjust," he said.

Lin Yue turned slightly.

"Adjust to what?"

"To living here."

Simple.

Like she had no history outside this place.

Like she had always been meant to fit inside it.

Lin Yue took a sip of water.

"You really don't feel anything when you see me?" she asked quietly.

Shen Yichen paused.

Just long enough.

Then:

"No."

Clean answer.

Too clean.

But his eyes didn't match it.

Lin Yue noticed that too.

She always did.

A knock came at the door.

Before either of them could react, it opened.

A woman stepped in.

Elegant. Confident. Familiar in the way people are when they don't feel like outsiders.

She smiled immediately when she saw Shen Yichen.

"Yichen," she said softly.

Too soft.

Too familiar.

Lin Yue didn't move.

The woman's gaze shifted to her.

A slow scan.

Then a smile that didn't reach her eyes.

"And who is she?"

Shen Yichen didn't answer immediately.

That pause again.

Lin Yue felt it.

The delay before truth.

"She's my wife," he said.

Silence dropped.

The woman blinked once.

Then laughed lightly.

"Yichen… don't joke."

But he didn't smile.

Didn't correct her.

Didn't soften it.

Lin Yue watched carefully.

The woman stepped closer to Shen Yichen and lightly touched his arm.

Too casual.

Too certain.

"You really scared me for a second," she said softly.

Then looked at Lin Yue again.

"Did he hire you?"

Lin Yue's expression didn't change.

Shen Yichen finally spoke.

"She's my wife."

Again.

Clearer.

Colder.

Final.

The woman's smile faded slightly.

Then returned.

But different now.

Sharper.

"You married him?" she asked Lin Yue.

"Yes," Lin Yue said.

A pause.

Then the woman smiled again.

"Oh…"

Soft.

Almost amused.

Then she leaned slightly.

"You should know something."

Silence tightened.

"He doesn't like women getting too close."

Her eyes flicked to Shen Yichen.

"Especially ones who misunderstand their place."

The room froze.

Shen Yichen didn't react.

Not outwardly.

But his hand tightened slightly.

Lin Yue saw it.

Of course she did.

The woman turned to leave.

Before stepping out, she smiled again.

"I'll see you later, Yichen."

And then she was gone.

Silence returned.

Lin Yue set her glass down slowly.

"She's close to you," she said.

No answer.

"Close enough to touch you," she added.

Shen Yichen finally looked at her.

Cold.

Controlled.

"Don't read too much into it."

Lin Yue tilted her head slightly.

"That's not denial."

A pause.

Then she stepped closer.

Not enough to touch.

But enough to change the air.

Shen Yichen's gaze sharpened instantly.

Warning.

"Don't stand so close," he said.

Lin Yue smiled faintly.

"Why?"

Silence.

Longer this time.

Then:

"Because you're my wife."

Flat.

But something behind it wasn't.

Lin Yue looked at him for a second.

Then softly:

"You say it like it's a rule."

His expression tightened slightly.

Then he turned away.

"Enough."

But Lin Yue didn't miss it.

The pause.

The restraint.

The way his eyes had lingered on her just a second too long.

Something in him was reacting.

Without permission.

And that was the problem.
