Chapter 22 - Stay Close or I Break

The villa felt quieter again.

Not empty.

Just controlled.

Like Shen Yichen had unconsciously made the entire space revolve around one rule—

don't create distance.

He stood near Lin Yue without even thinking about it anymore.

It wasn't a decision now.

It was habit forming into instinct.

Lu Han's patience was visibly thinning.

"You're reinforcing a dependency cycle," he said again.

Shen Yichen didn't even look at him this time.

"I'm maintaining stability," he replied.

Lin Yue glanced at him.

"You're calling dependence stability now?" she asked softly.

Shen Yichen turned his head slightly toward her.

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No shame.

Just acceptance.

Lin Yue exhaled slowly.

"That's dangerous thinking."

Shen Yichen nodded once.

"I know."

A pause.

"But it works."

Silence.

That answer wasn't emotional anymore.

It was practical.

Like he had evaluated every alternative and discarded them.

Lu Han stepped forward sharply.

"It only works because you're ignoring long-term damage."

Shen Yichen finally looked at him.

Slow.

Cold.

"I already lived the long-term damage," he said quietly.

A pause.

"It was called emptiness."

Silence dropped instantly.

Because that word—emptiness—had become his baseline fear.

Lin Yue studied him carefully.

"You're still not seeing me as a person," she said softly.

Shen Yichen turned to her immediately.

His gaze softened slightly.

"I see you," he said.

A pause.

"More clearly than anything else."

Lin Yue shook her head slightly.

"You see me as your anchor."

Shen Yichen didn't deny it.

"Yes."

Simple.

Honest.

Final.

"And I need that anchor."

Lu Han stepped forward again.

"You're emotionally outsourcing your entire identity onto her."

Shen Yichen didn't even look at him.

"I'm not outsourcing," he said.

A pause.

"I'm grounding."

Lin Yue's expression tightened slightly.

"And what happens when I move?"

Shen Yichen answered instantly.

"I won't let you go far."

That sentence was calm.

Not threatening.

But absolute in intent.

Lin Yue frowned slightly.

"That's not a healthy response."

Shen Yichen nodded once.

"I know."

A pause.

"But it's the only response that stops me from breaking."

Silence.

Lin Yue looked at him for a long moment.

"You're tying your survival to my presence," she said softly.

Shen Yichen didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

Lu Han's voice sharpened.

"This is exactly how obsession replaces personality."

Shen Yichen finally turned toward him fully.

And this time, his voice dropped lower.

"I don't have a personality worth keeping if she's not here."

Silence.

That wasn't self-hate.

It was reconstruction.

Lin Yue's breath slowed slightly.

"You're erasing yourself," she said quietly.

Shen Yichen shook his head once.

"No."

A pause.

"I'm choosing what keeps me whole."

Then he looked at her.

Their distance barely existed now.

And his voice softened slightly.

"If you stay close," he said quietly,

"I stay myself."

A pause.

"If you leave…"

His fingers tightened slightly—not forceful, just instinctive.

"…I don't know who I become."

Silence fell again.

And this time—

Lin Yue understood the truth fully.

He wasn't trying to love her.

He was using her presence as the only mirror that kept him recognizable to himself.

And without that mirror…

he didn't trust what remained.
