The morning sunlight shining through the window made William press his eyes shut tightly for a moment.
He hadn't slept at all last night.
Slowly opening his eyes again, he turned to look at Thalia, who was still sleeping quietly on the hospital bed.
Her face looked calmer now. But somehow, that only made the heaviness in his chest worse.
William slowly glanced around the room before his eyes stopped at the steak he had asked a chef from a top restaurant to prepare for her last night.
It was still left untouched on the table. Because in the end, Thalia had only cried in his embrace until she fell asleep.
"I don't want to die…" Her trembling sobs from last night echoed inside his head again, "I want to be with you in this life…"
"In this life…?" William's head tilted slightly after recalling those exact words.
Those words might not have sounded strange to anyone else.
But for William, it felt like there was something deeper hidden underneath them.
