Chapter 26 - Investigations (1)

We were sitting together, observing the scenery from the balcony of Chloe's room while partaking in breakfast. She wore a simple, elegant one-piece dress, and since my jeans had been completely torn off during our vigorous activities the previous night, she had lent me a comfortable pair of simple black trousers that I was currently wearing. As I enjoyed my eggs, she began giving me a thorough rundown of the unsettling series of murders plaguing the municipality.

"It started a few months ago," Chloe began, her voice carrying a tone of deep, analytical concern as she gazed out over the gothic estate. "Random murders with no obvious patterns. The local clan wasn't really alerted until the incidents started happening much more frequently and the overall casualty count began to rise sharply. At first, local law enforcement simply assumed it was the work of a deranged human serial killer, but after the medical examiners' reports and forensic results came in, things started smelling fishy."

She paused, taking a delicate sip of her morning drink before continuing.

"The victims didn't show any classic death-inducing traumas—no massive internal bleeding, no fatal bludgeoning, no poison. There were only some defensive wounds which naturally occurred as they desperately tried to struggle against their aggressors. It was then that the local underground contacts reached out directly to my father, and he deployed me here to take command of the investigation."

"So, to get a solid idea of what I was actually up against," she sighed, "I snuck into one of the municipal police forensic facilities accompanied by a hired elite mage to search for any hidden traces of supernatural foul play. But the integrity of the bodies hadn't been compromised in any visible way. Everything appeared completely orderly, down to not a single hair missing. That in itself was deeply weird, because supernatural predators only ever attack humans for physical sustenance, draining blood or consuming flesh. Yet these bodies were entirely intact, so we dug much deeper into the magical signatures and came up with absolute zilch. Finding no concrete proof or magical residue to help deduce the overarching agenda of this group, I decided our best bet was to try and catch them directly in the act."

"I deployed surveillance vampires all over the city, strategically positioning them in dark corners, abandoned warehouses, and deserted alleys," Chloe explained, her crimson eyes narrowing slightly. "And eventually, it worked. I managed to reach an active crime scene just as it was unfolding and stopped the culprits in their tracks. It turned out to be a coordinated cell consisting of a lycan and a mage. After a short, intense skirmish, I beat them into submission. But right before I could interrogate them about their ultimate agenda, the lycan brutally sacrificed himself, creating enough of a distraction to allow the mage to escape into the night. Unfortunately, as reports quickly flooded in, I realized that wasn't the only location hit across the city simultaneously."

"It was then that I truly understood this case was vastly bigger than I had initially calculated," she stated grimly. "The members of this group are not only diversified across different supernatural races, but they operate as an exceptionally tight, disciplined unit. The proof of that is their terrifying readiness to sacrifice their lives for one another—well, either that, or they are completely, fanatically brainwashed."

"I feel as if I am missing a fundamentally important clue, but I just can't quite get my finger on it," Chloe admitted, running a slender hand through her dark locks. "That's why I desperately needed you to come here. I thought that maybe, with your unique perspective and unshakeable resilience, you might be able to spot whatever obvious detail I'm overlooking. The total casualties are now climbing into the hundreds."

"I see," I said after thoroughly digesting the dense, troubling information she had just laid out. "I will do absolutely anything I can to help you crack this wide open. Where do we start?"

"Well, I could start by showing you the preserved bodies firsthand, and then we can inspect the primary crime scenes," she replied decisively.

"Alright, it's a plan."

After finishing our breakfast, we dressed and stepped out of the room. As we walked through the dimly lit, sprawling corridors of the mansion, I could distinctly feel numerous powerful presences lurking throughout the estate. I even caught fleeting glimpses of shadows darting past in the periphery of my vision. Noticing my observant gaze scanning the gloomy architecture, Chloe offered a brief explanation.

"Yeah, I know it's not exactly a warm, cozy suburban home," she acknowledged softly. "That's mostly because the majority of the permanent inhabitants here are ancient vampires who have lived for hundreds and hundreds of years. You could say they are old-school traditionalists."

"Yeah, you don't say," I muttered, offering a slight grin. "Though to be fair, it fits the exact original aesthetic I imagined for a massive estate inhabited by creatures of the night."

"Well, not all vampires live reclusively in spooky, gothic houses," she countered with a light chuckle. "In fact, most vampires living integrated within modern human society are thoroughly contemporary. They flow seamlessly with the times."

She led me down deep into the reinforced concrete basement, where the corpses of a few select victims were securely stored in specialized containment bags. The underground chamber was kept at a freezing, sub-zero temperature thanks to a permanent stasis spell cast by a resident mage. A neat row of plastic body bags rested on metal tables, forming a grim, chilling picture. We stopped in front of one of the central tables.

"This one is among the very first documented victims," Chloe said quietly. "She died in a quiet local park, found seated upright on a public bench. Because there were no obvious external wounds, the initial human responders didn't even realize she had been maliciously attacked."

With practiced care, she unzipped the plastic barrier, and the pale corpse of a woman was revealed before my eyes.

She appeared to have been in her early thirties. If it had been during my old, miserable life back in the Coldstone district before my initial murder, I would have panicked, dry-heaved, or been utterly paralyzed by the grotesque sight of multiple dead bodies. But since my first death and the cascading series of reality-breaking transformations that followed, I wasn't remotely anything like the fragile person I used to be. I had slaughtered packs of hostile supernaturals with my bare hands without batting an eye; viewing a sterile forensic corpse no longer triggered any visceral terror.

Shaking those brief, detached thoughts away, I focused entirely on the corpse before me, searching for any hidden traces of supernatural foul play. I channeled the formless Willpower gathered deep within my consciousness, directing it toward my eyes and causing them to glow with a brilliant, swirling energy. My enhanced vision seemed to effortlessly pass right through her skin, diving deep into her internal organs and subtle energetic pathways. As I probed deeper and deeper, everything around me turned pitch black, until my consciousness reached a very specific internal location: a massive, unnatural gulf. It looked as though a vital piece of her spiritual or physical essence had been violently ripped out, leaving behind a completely abyssal, gaping hole. This profound void radiated an immediate, deeply disturbing feeling of extreme wrongness.

I snapped back to reality, blinking away the glowing light, and looked over at Chloe, who had been waiting for me with infinite patience.

"I found something," I reported, frowning deeply. "I don't yet know how to properly explain or interpret it, though." I proceeded to give her a detailed, blow-by-blow description of the abyssal void I had witnessed inside the victim's chest cavity.

She fell entirely silent, absorbing my words with intense, calculated focus. After a heavy moment of reflection, she asked, "Can you check the rest of the preserved bodies and verify if that exact same anomaly is present everywhere?"

"Yeah, of course, no problem."

I systematically moved down the line, and true to my initial finding, every single one of the victims possessed the exact same hollow, ripped-out gulf within them.

"As expected, they all share it," Chloe stated sternly, crossing her arms. "Whatever underlying reason these monsters have for hunting down hundreds of innocent people, it is unequivocally tied to this mysterious gulf."

Suddenly, the tense atmosphere was broken by the sharp ringing of a mobile phone. It was Chloe's. She flicked her thumb across the screen and brought it to her ear. I could only hear her side of the brief, concise conversation.

"Hello."

"I see. Don't engage them directly; just maintain a safe distance and continue watching their movements. I'll be there shortly."

She terminated the call, turned her intense gaze back to me, and declared, "My intelligence operatives are actively tailing a highly suspicious bunch of individuals right now. Let's move."

We rushed down to an underground subterranean garage filled to the brim with opulent, pristine vehicles spanning various historical eras, some so exquisitely preserved they could easily be classified as priceless museum antiques. Choosing a stunning, high-performance blue sports car, we zoomed out of the estate and merged directly into the dense evening traffic.

Thanks to Chloe's exceptional, boundary-pushing driving skills, we arrived at our designated destination in record time. It was a sprawling industrial zone teeming with massive storage warehouses and automated production lines. We parked the car discreetly in the shadows and walked toward a narrow alleyway where two of her operatives dressed in pitch-black tactical gear were lurking. As we approached, they offered crisp, respectful bows to Chloe before delivering their report.

"The suspects consist of a high-tier mage, an aggressive werewolf, a rogue vampire, and an unidentified shapeshifter," one of them whispered urgently, gesturing toward a large manufacturing building fifty meters away. A small group of late-shift workers had just congregated near the main entrance, standing casually just outside.

"Good work. Maintain standby positions and immediately call for encrypted backup if the situation escalates," Chloe instructed with authoritative precision before signaling for me to shadow her closely.

As we crept closer to the facility, we got a much clearer visual on our targets. The mage was tall, lanky, and gaunt, clad in an intimidating long black coat and dark jeans. The werewolf displayed a remarkably robust, heavily muscled physique beneath his casual t-shirt and denim, practically radiating brute force. The vampire looked like a hardened gothic punk covered in intricate underworld tattoos and facial piercings, while the shapeshifter was an absolute mountain of a creature, completely hairless and unnaturally broad. They weren't even bothering to maintain a low profile as they aggressively forced their way through the heavy security doors of the production plant.

I exchanged a knowing glance with Chloe, fully aware we were both arriving at the same terrifying conclusion—these were our primary targets. But a nagging question echoed in my mind: why were they brazenly attacking a heavily populated industrial facility in the dead of night? Their established modus operandi thus far had been targeting isolated, stray individuals in quiet areas; this sudden, public display of brute force was completely out of character.

We followed them inside, stepping onto the massive warehouse floor where numerous employees were still operating heavy manufacturing machinery. The four intruders marched purposefully toward a cluster of workers. One alert employee noticed the sheer abnormality of their menacing presence and cautiously stepped forward, attempting to challenge their unauthorized entry.

Before the poor man could even utter a syllable, the gothic vampire darted forward with terrifying, blinding speed and clamped a heavy hand around his throat. He immediately raised a strange, glowing medallion and pressed it directly against the worker's forehead. A brilliant, blinding flash of luminescence erupted from the metal. Something ethereal and pulsing appeared to be forcibly ripped out of the man's physical body and instantly swallowed by the ravenous medallion. The employee's eyes rolled backward into his head, and he collapsed heavily onto the concrete floor, completely lifeless. Before the remaining workers could even begin to process the horrific reality of what had just transpired, the tall, skinny mage flicked his wrists toward them, sending a rolling wave of pulsing blue light rippling across the room. Every single worker instantly froze in place, locked rigidly and unable to move a muscle.

Chloe and I observed the entire brutal spectacle from behind a stack of shipping crates, realizing with crystal clarity that these individuals were not only immensely powerful, but they were harvesting some vital component from their victims and storing it directly within the mage's artifact.

As we silently prepared to spring our ambush and intervene, a sudden, primal wave of danger washed over my senses. Chloe must have felt the exact same psychic shift, because she violently shoved me out of the line of fire just as a massive, car-crushing fist slammed into the concrete floor where I had been standing a fraction of a second prior, leaving a deep, spiderweb-like crater in the stone.

It was the hairless shapeshifter. How on earth could a creature of such massive, bulky proportions move with such terrifying speed and absolute silence?

"Well, well, it looks like we have uninvited guests!" the giant bellowed mockingly to his cohorts, who instantly pivoted toward our position at the deafening sound.

"Exterminate them immediately!" the mage ordered the strike team with cold, merciless authority.

"Gladly," the gothic vampire hissed, licking his lips with a wild, crazed look in his eyes as he broke into a savage sprint straight toward me.
