Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: Reckoning at the Castle

(Liam's POV)

The week leading up to the wedding felt like a whirlwind, every moment steeped in anticipation, excitement, and an undercurrent of confusion. As the day approached, I found myself grappling with the weight of my emotions, torn between the life I was planning with Linna and the magnetic pull I felt toward Aaron. The tension between duty and desire was palpable, and a decision loomed larger every day. I realized I had to confront my feelings, not just for the sake of my own clarity but for Linna and Aaron as well.

On a particularly heavy afternoon, feeling the stress of the upcoming wedding settle like a weight on my shoulders, I made an impulsive decision. I needed space to think, and the old castle—the site of so many pivotal moments—beckoned me, almost as if it were an old friend offering solace amidst the storm.

Driving through the winding roads toward the castle felt both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. Each turn unraveled memories, echoes of laughter, and stifled emotions. When I finally parked and stepped out, the familiar cool breeze felt like a balm against my troubled heart. I walked toward the castle, the wooden walls standing tall against the blue sky, a reminder of how much had changed since my last visit.

Once inside, I followed the dimly lit halls until I reached the grand room where our almost-kiss had transpired—a place filled with echoes of everything left unsaid. And there he was. Aaron sat on the very spot where our worlds had briefly intertwined, a look of contentment gracing his face.

He looked up as I entered, his expression shifting from surprise to a warm smile, and for a moment, everything else faded away. I expected avoidance, perhaps even coldness, but instead, there he sat, radiating an unexpected joy that sparked something deep within me.

"Liam!" he exclaimed, his voice bright with genuine delight. I paused, my breath catching in my throat at the sight of him. It was exhilarating to see him happy, but a wave of guilt crashed over me as memories of our complicated past flooded my mind.

"What are you doing here?" he asked, rising to his feet, the exuberance in his tone contrasting sharply with the turmoil stirring inside me.

"I—" The knot in my throat tightened as I stepped closer. Without thinking, I closed the distance between us and wrapped him in a tight embrace. The familiar warmth of his body pulsated against mine, and for a fleeting moment, I allowed myself to feel what I had been suppressing for far too long—a deep sense of relief, yet mixed with a fresh wave of uncertainty.

"I thought you'd want to avoid me… after everything," I confessed, my voice barely above a whisper. "I didn't expect to see you smiling like this."

Aaron's chuckle rumbled softly through his chest, and he pulled back slightly to look me in the eye. "Avoid you? Never. I mean, things were… complicated, sure, but I was never mad at you. I was just trying to understand everything—just like you."

His words struck me hard, resonating with the truth I'd been dancing around for so long. It was comforting and disconcerting at the same time. "I've missed you," I admitted, heart racing. The weight of those words felt both liberating and terrifying.

"I missed you too," he replied, his smile softening as we shared a brief moment of silence, the air around us thickening with unspoken thoughts. As the quiet lingered, a realization knocked against my heart, loud and insistent—I needed to settle everything before I could move forward. I would confront my feelings, but first, I owed it to both Aaron and Linna to be honest with myself.

"I don't know how to say this, but… before the wedding, I want to settle things for good. I've been thinking a lot about everything that happened between us," I began, feeling a mix of nerves and determination. "Before I can move forward, I need to confront my own feelings. It's not about you leaving or getting lost in the past. It's about finally being honest with myself."

Aaron nodded, listening intently, and for a moment, I hesitated, the words I needed to say hanging in the air between us. I thought of Linna—her laughter, her aspirations, her dreams—and the beautiful life we were supposed to build together. But I also thought of the undeniable connection I shared with Aaron, the unresolved emotions that lingered like the scent of rain on dry earth.

"I need to talk to Linna before I can really embrace what I feel. It's complicated," I confessed, my heart racing. I didn't mention the engagement directly; I didn't want to complicate things further for us. "But after I make things right, I promise I'll come back to you. There's something I've needed to say—and I know it's been a long time coming."

A flicker of understanding passed through Aaron's eyes. "You're being brave," he said softly. "I know that must be hard."

"It is," I admitted, feeling the vulnerability wash over me. "I've spent so long putting everything off, trapped between two lives I want so desperately to make work." I felt breathless, the weight of my confession illuminating the tangled emotions within me.

"I believe in you, Liam," Aaron said, his voice steady and reassuring. "Whatever you decide to do, whatever it takes—just know that I'll be here."

As he spoke, the walls I had built around my emotions began to erode, piece by piece. I realized that Aaron wasn't just a specter of my past; he was a living, breathing part of my present—I felt him pulling me back into his orbit, the gravitational pull of our shared history strong and inviting.

"I promise I'll come back," I said, the urgency in my words echoing through the quiet room. "And when I do, I'll be ready to finally express everything I haven't. What I've been feeling all this time."

Aaron smiled warmly, and I felt a flicker of hope ignite within me. It was almost as if the mist of uncertainty that had clouded my thoughts was clearing, making way for a sense of purpose.

"I hope to see you soon, then," he said, his tone filled with a mix of anticipation and longing.

"I promise," I affirmed, knowing that whatever awaited me ahead, finding clarity would require both courage and honesty. Walking away from the castle, I felt lighter somehow, as though the burden of my choices had shifted.

As I drove away, glancing back at the fortress that had borne witness to so many pivotal moments, I felt the weight of my decisions pressing lighter on my shoulders. I still had mountains to climb—conversations to navigate, feelings to confront—but a newfound determination bolstered my spirit.

The journey ahead wouldn't be easy; it would require reckoning with emotions and embracing truths left unsaid. But as I steered down the winding road, I felt a sense of hope radiating within me. The sun peeked through the clouds, casting warm rays on my path, and I knew that I was finally on the way to confronting my own heart and, hopefully, discovering a future filled with unrestrained honesty and love, wherever it might lead.
