Chapter 25 - The Gift? 25

I did not spend the fourteen days building a trap.

I spent them walking into Victor's salon on a night he still thought was a toast week and saying the sentence I had been refusing since Tess sat on a windowsill.

"Do it," I said. "The Gift. Now. Before the roof comes down."

Victor looked at me like a rumor that had finally picked a language.

"You spent a year saying no."

"Yeah. I'm done saying no to the part that might let me stand up."

Tess was there. Coat perfect. Eyes gold at the rim. She did not smile.

"Darling. If he turns you, you will be awake. That was my standard. It remains mine."

"I'm awake," I said. "That's the problem."

Victor did not ask about loops. I did not offer them. He heard useful. He heard mine. He heard a warm asset choosing the dark on his schedule.

"Very well," Victor said. "Do not embarrass the blood."

It was not a bite in an alley.

It was a room without windows, a chair I was told to sit in, and Victor's wrist opened like a signature. Cold iron on the tongue. Then his mouth at my throat, not hungry, ceremonial, old. The body I had built to nineteen and eighteen and twenty-five on paper tried to reject it. Vitality fought. The Trait fought. Will 25 held my name in place while the rest of me came apart.

Cinematic was the wrong word until it wasn't.

Heat first. Not fever. Forge. Every vein lit like someone had poured daylight into wiring that was never meant for it. The pulse I had been so proud of stumbled, caught, stumbled again. Returning Tide ran the wrong direction and then both directions. I heard my own heart miss, find a second beat that did not belong to hospitals, miss again.

Bones argued. Shoulders I had earned in a spare room and a London basement unknit and settled wider. Teeth ached, split, became a problem my tongue had to learn. The square of light from no window still burned behind my eyes. Hearing opened until the house next door was a conversation and the street was a map of pulses. Smell arrived like a second language: Tess's perfume and iron, Victor's age, my own blood turning over.

I blacked out without dying.

That was new.

I came back on the floor with a mouth full of copper and a chest that was not doing the old job. No breath unless I remembered it. Vein Map did not drum. It sang. Every warm body in a block was a lamp. Dying Gaze washed the salon in stacked endings and I could sort them without Deep Ledger breaking a sweat.

Then the System tore itself in half.

Not a level-up.

A rewrite.

[Host condition: Embrace complete]

[Race: Human (Transitional) → Vampire (Fledgling — Victor's line)]

[Base attributes ×5]

[Class retained: Refusal Pulse]

[System evolution: Blood-Evolution Engine]

I lay there and let the numbers land because if I stood too fast I was going to put a hole in Victor's floor.

Status

Name: Helio King

Race: Vampire (Fledgling)

Level: 20

Class: Refusal Pulse

Strength: 19 → 95

Agility: 17 → 85

Vitality: 18 → 90

Will: 25 → 125

The ×5 was not a gym. It was a different animal wearing my face. Strength 95 was not a car with the brake on. It was the idea of the car becoming optional. Agility 85 made Pulse Step look like I had been walking through mud on purpose. Vitality 90 sat on top of the Gift's own mend. Will 125 made Reflect's glass look thin. I did not fire it. Not in this room.

New lines wrote themselves.

Fledgling Passives

Night-Sight — dark is information.

Blood Sense — pulses read as direction and quality.

Unbreathing — air is optional. Panic still is not.

Sun Drag — daylight is possible. Daylight is tax.

Kindred Mask — the face still passes for human if you remember to blink.

Fledgling Actives

Gifted Step — short burst; stacks ugly with Pulse Step if I am stupid.

Feeding — not a toy. Not a crate.

Then the engine.

Blood-Evolution Engine

Blood taken converts to Evolution EXP.

Quality and will of the source change the yield.

Copies still pay ordinary EXP.

Living work still pays ordinary EXP.

Blood EXP unlocks Evolution nodes separate from Refusal Pulse.

Warning: feeding is not a dungeon. The city still has to walk around the hole.

I tagged it because paper was still ash.

I'm not warm.

Victor's line. Tess watched. I asked for this.

Numbers jumped a bracket I cannot pretend is human.

System wants blood now. That's the new faucet. Copies are still the clean one.

Two weeks. He still doesn't know my name.

Victor stood over me, already bored in the way elders got when the ceremony ended and the child had not burst into fire.

"Rise. If you cannot rise, I wasted a wrist."

I rose. The floor complained. I pulled it back. London stillness. New weight.

Tess looked at my mouth, then my eyes, then the place my pulse was not.

"Congratulations," she said, and there was no party in it. "You are expensive now. Do not spend yourself on a rumor you cannot prove."

I flexed a hand. Claws were an option. I put them away.

"I'm not here to prove a rumor," I said. My voice had a second register under it. I flattened it. "I'm here because the last version of me kept dying on your carpet."

Victor's gaze sharpened a fraction.

"Explain later. Hunt later. Tonight you learn not to tear the door off when you leave. Fledglings who make scenes get put down by their own table."

I left without tearing the door off.

Outside, the Mark still pulled. Eight-something kilometers. Radu. Laundry. The quest unarmed, waiting on proximity.

Archive filed the rewrite down to the cell and the thought.

I walked the long way home because sunlight would be a tax I had not paid yet, and because I needed the stretch of street to feel the new body without an audience.

Fourteen days.

Different math.

I did not call it hope.

I called it a second set of teeth.
