Day one started in the townhouse with the blinds down and a body that would not stop reporting.
I sat on the floor because the bed felt like a suggestion. No breath unless I asked for it. Night-Sight turned the dark into print. Blood Sense lit the block: neighbor two walls over, dog downstairs, a jogger who did not know the house had changed categories.
I opened the rewrite on purpose.
Blood-Evolution Engine
Ordinary EXP: errands, copies, living work. Unchanged.
Blood EXP: feeding. Quality and will of the source change the yield.
Evolution nodes: locked until first sanctioned feed. Victor's rule, not the System's.
"Where do I sit. Compared to them. Numbers."
[Petition accepted.]
Fledgling baseline adjusted by pre-Embrace attributes, Refusal Pulse, Trait: Blood That Refused.
Host: STR 95 | AGI 85 | VIT 90 | WIL 125
Result: anomalous fledgling.
The seating chart came with values this time. Estimates. Not names on a gym wall. The System guessing from what it had tasted in rooms.
Local Court — estimated
Rafael — STR 52 / AGI 61 / VIT 48 / WIL 40
Mara — STR 47 / AGI 50 / VIT 51 / WIL 58
Silas — STR 31 / AGI 34 / VIT 38 / WIL 55
Anton — STR 49 / AGI 54 / VIT 46 / WIL 42
Tess — STR 71 / AGI 76 / VIT 68 / WIL 80
Victor — unreadable after last night. Sire bond active. Ceiling moved.
Radu — out of bracket. Do not price him.
I sat with that until it stopped looking like a joke.
Rafael was the knife. I still cleared him on three columns. Anton was close in a woods and not close in a hall. Silas won paper and lost a doorway. Mara could take the room if I let her talk. Tess still sat above me on craft even if the raw math had narrowed. Victor was a blank where a number should be. Laundry was not on the page.
Sun Drag ticked when a sliver hit the blind. Tax. Possible. Not free. I left the sliver alone.
I tagged it.
Day one. Chart says I sit over most of the table and under Tess. Victor unknown. The other one not listed.
Engine wants blood. Victor wants manners. I want two weeks that do not end on a carpet.
I did not feed. First sanctioned night had not been named yet.
Victor called the table before dusk like nothing in the city had shifted except his sleeves.
Same salon. Same missing windows. The six plus me. I stood because sitting felt like pretending I was still the folder.
Victor did not waste a toast.
"Last night I spent blood on the warm asset. That is not a secret. What is a secret, and will not remain one if you are stupid, is what the spending did."
Rafael's smile had an edge.
"He looks expensive. He also looks like he could take a door off. That is my concern."
"Your concern is noted," Victor said. "It is also small."
He let that sit.
"An ordinary Embrace is a courtesy and a risk. You take a clerk, a thief, a pretty pulse. You get a child who must be taught stillness for years. The sire feels a trickle. A warmth in the line. Nothing you would bet a roof on. I have turned two such in a century. I remember the trickle. I do not remember a change in my own ceiling."
Mara's arms folded tighter.
"And this is not a trickle."
"No." Victor's gaze passed over me without kindness and without doubt. "The boy arrived already wrong. Loud blood. A body that had outrun what warmth is supposed to be. A will that did not belong in a fledgling. I took that into the line. The line paid me back."
Silas's voice was cloth.
"Paid how."
"I do not know the limit," Victor said, and the admission cost him. Elders hated that sentence. "I know what I was yesterday. I know that today the room sits different on my skin. Speed I had filed as finished is not finished. A weight I had stopped testing is there again. Turning quality scales. The old books say so and nobody believes the books until the quality is standing in their salon not tearing the door off. He is the quality. I am what came back up the line. I will spend the next nights finding where that ends. You will not help me test it on Cassian. You will not gossip it to Glass. You will treat him as mine and as dangerous, which are the same instruction."
Anton looked at me, then at Victor.
"Packs will smell the change."
"Let them smell a taller roof," Victor said. "That is useful."
Tess had not spoken. When she did, it was light and sharp.
"You fed yourself on a child who said yes because he was afraid of a rumor. Charming. Does he know he made you hungrier."
Victor almost smiled.
"He knows he is no longer the weakest thing in most rooms I own. That is sufficient for day one."
Rafael leaned forward.
"So we point him."
"We teach him not to make a scene," Victor said. "Then we point him. On this table he outmuscles the majority of you. He does not outrank me. He does not outrank a problem that is five centuries bored. Do not confuse those sentences."
I kept my voice flat.
"I'm not here to sit above anybody's chair. I'm here to not end on this carpet."
Victor's eyes flicked. Interest, not warmth.
"Then learn the sun tax. Learn a sanctioned feed. Learn that a new body still dies if you hand it to something that does not care what year you are. The rest of you: the line got richer last night. That richness has a name and a temper. Do not test either without me."
He dismissed them with a look.
Tess passed me at the door, perfume and iron.
"Day one," she murmured. "Try not to enjoy whatever private arithmetic you are doing. Arithmetic lies when the guest is late for a party."
I already knew which guest.
Archive filed Victor's confession next to the chart.
I walked home under a sky that was starting to cost me, counting fourteen days with a mouth that had new rules and a sire who had just admitted he did not know how far he went.
