Interrogation, questioning, examination, torture, and inquisition are all entirely different approaches.
Most of the time, what ordinary people encounter is merely interrogation, possibly on the street or in a law enforcement agency.
Those officers would stare at you menacingly, asking you some routine questions.
Such as "Where were you at a certain time?", "Who the hell can prove you're not lying?", "How is your relationship with so-and-so" and the like.
They won't hit you, let alone use any truth-inducing measures, just glaring at you with a seemingly fierce expression.
Then comes questioning, where the questions become more detailed. Your uncooperative attitude might drive the interrogators mad, and then they might take inappropriate actions not mentioned in the Federation law enforcement manual.
But this process is still relatively safe, with the biggest threat being minimal physical conflict, and even that isn't too severe.
