Chapter 149: Senju Dilemma
10 JULY - KONOHA YEAR 46
SENJU RESIDENCE - UZUMAKI MITO
Since the Uzumaki Clan came to Konoha, Danzo had been suppressed by Raiken in ways that Mito could not explain, but had watched with satisfaction.
She did not know exactly how he had managed to do it but eventually it was not just Danzo who fell, even Hiruzen had lost his position as Hokage and now walked around the village as nothing more than the former Third Hokage, a title that was not important like before.
Thinking about the two of them and where they had ended up brought a small smile to her face without her even noticing it.
"Grandma, why are you smiling?" asked Tsunade, looking at her grandmother with a curious expression.
"Oh, Tsuna," said Mito, snapping out of her thoughts. She looked at her granddaughter who was already staring back at her with that familiar expression that made it clear she was not going to let the question go unanswered.
Mito gave a small hmph and let the smile stay comfortably on her face.
"I was thinking about your sensei and Danzo," replied Mito.
"What about them?" asked Tsunade.
"Do you not find it amusing," said Mito, "that both of them spent so long holding onto their positions and quietly weakening everyone around them, only to end up losing everything in the end?"
Tsunade went quiet at that question because she was no longer the same naive girl she had been before. Between her grandmother words over the years and everything Raiken had brought into Konoha simply by enriching their clan, she had see things more clearly than she once had.
"What do you think will happen to the Senju Clan, Tsunade?" asked Mito after a moment.
"Will we become stronger?" Tsunade asked back, turning the question around.
"That is for another time," said Mito evenly. "Right now I want to know what you honestly think will happen to this clan."
Tsunade was quiet for a moment before answering her grandma.
"There is no future for the Senju Clan as a clan," she said finally, "but there is a future for Konoha, that is what Grandpa Hashirama always believed."
Mito smiled at that, genuinely.
"I will tell you something that and I hope this conversation won't leave this room, " said Mito. "The other Senju elders, those old men they have started talking about reclaiming the Senju name."
Tsunade stared at her grandmother with the look of disbelief.
"Why would they want that now?" said Tsunade. "They were the ones who agreed to it in the first place alongside Grandpa Hashirama and Grandpa Tobirama."
"Because now they can see what having a clan name actually gives them," said Mito simply. "Just look at the Uzumaki Clan, they are now the wealthiest clan in Konoha and the Uchiha Clan has grown considerably just from being close to them. Meanwhile the Senju elders and descendant are living mission to mission with no land and no accumulated wealth to fall back on. If a mission does not come in then neither does the income and even when it does the amount is nothing compared to what those two clans bring in without even leaving the village."
"But they agreed to give it up at first place," said Tsunade, still struggling to fully accept what she was hearing.
"They agreed because at the time it did not feel like a loss," said Mito. "The Senju were wealthy and respected and it seemed like a noble gesture rather than a sacrifice but that was then." She paused for a moment before continuing. "They could live with their choice when everyone around them was in a similar position. What they cannot seem to live with is watching the Uchiha Clan grow comfortable and prosperous right in front of them while they are counting their mission pay and hoping it stretches to the end of the month."
Tsunade said nothing for a while, turning it all over in her mind.
"So they want the name back because of money," said Tsunade flatly.
"They want the name back because of what the name can give them," replied Mito. "Which at this point amounts to the same thing."
"What will you do Grandma Mito if they wanted to use Senju Clan name again?" asked Tsunade.
"They can get it but they won't become rich," replied Mito. "Because Uzumaki clan are rich thanks to their invention, while Senju land had separated and given to them. Only small part of land had been lended to merchant."
"Grandma why won't you stop them if they are no longer benefit for using Senju name?" asked Tsunade.
"The answer is simple because they will direct their hatred to me, you and nawaki." smiled Mito. "But when they found out even if they use Senju clan name then they won't have anyone to scold."
Tsunade can only stared at her grandmother with mouth wide open.
OTSUTSUKI CLAN
MOON - ANOTHER BRANCH OF HAMURA
After Hamura and Hagoromo had sealed their mother on the moon, Hamura made the decision to leave the earth behind entirely and make the moon his home just to keep his mother had someone.
From that point forward his descendants had watched over the earth from above, observing the bloodline of Hagoromo from a distance, bearing witness to every war that rose and fell among the people on earth and there had been many wars that they forgot to count.
"The bloodline of Hagoromo has stopped their war again," said Kimura Otsutsuki, his eyes fixed on the image of the earth below them.
"They will start another one," replied Kinshiro Otsutsuki without looking up. "They always do, give them enough time and they will find a reason."
It had been the same pattern for as long as either of them could remember.
Kimura was quiet for a moment.
"It looks like great grandfather was wrong about them," said Kimura Otsutsuki.
Kinshiro did not respond to that immediately. He simply looked at the earth below with the same unreadable expression.
