Michael noticed that Amara had become unusually quiet.
They had planned to attend the book fair together, but she had cancelled twice.
He decided to check on her.
Michael: Good afternoon, Amara. I hope you're doing well. I noticed you have been quiet lately. Is everything okay?
Amara stared at the message.
She appreciated his concern, but she was not ready to discuss her personal life.
Amara: I'm okay. Just dealing with a few things.
Michael: I understand. You don't have to explain anything. Just remember to take care of yourself.
She smiled faintly.
There was something refreshing about speaking to someone who did not demand explanations.
Later that week, Michael invited her for lunch again.
This time, she accepted.
They met at a small restaurant near the office building.
Michael noticed her expression.
"You don't look as cheerful as usual."
Amara smiled politely.
"I'm fine."
"You know, you don't always have to say you're fine."
She looked at him.
"Sometimes it's easier than explaining."
"That's understandable."
He did not ask further questions.
They talked about work, family and their plans for the coming year.
After lunch, Michael walked her towards the entrance.
"Amara, can I ask you something?"
"Sure."
"Are you seeing someone?"
She was surprised.
"Why do you ask?"
"Because I would rather understand your situation than make assumptions."
Amara considered her answer.
"I'm not officially in a relationship. But there's someone from my past."
Michael nodded.
"Someone you're still emotionally connected to?"
"Yes."
He looked at her calmly.
"Thank you for being honest."
Amara felt slightly embarrassed.
"I hope that doesn't make things awkward."
"Not at all. I enjoy talking to you, but I don't want to become part of something complicated."
She appreciated his honesty.
"Thank you for understanding."
They said goodbye.
On her way home, Amara thought about the conversation.
Michael was not pressuring her.
He was simply being honest about his intentions.
And that was something she respected.
Meanwhile, Daniel had noticed the distance between them.
He had sent several messages, but Amara's replies were brief.
He finally called.
"Amara, can we talk?"
"About what?"
"About us."
She sighed.
"Daniel, I don't think there's anything else to discuss right now."
"Please. I know I made another mistake."
"Another mistake?"
He became quiet.
Amara continued.
"You keep calling your decisions mistakes. At what point do you accept that they were choices?"
Daniel had no answer.
"I am tired," she said. "I need space."
"Does this mean you're choosing Michael?"
Amara became annoyed.
"Why does everything have to be about Michael?"
"Because I can see that you're getting close to him."
"Daniel, even if I decide to move on with someone else, that will be my decision. You cannot keep making me feel guilty for having a life."
He sighed.
"I don't want to lose you."
"You should have thought about that before."
The call ended.
Daniel sat on his bed, staring at the ceiling.
He was beginning to realise that apologies could not keep Amara waiting forever.
Two days later, Sophia called him.
She had an important update.
"Daniel, I went for my appointment today."
"How did it go?"
"The doctor says everything is progressing well."
Daniel smiled.
"That's good news."
There was a pause.
Then Sophia asked:
"Have you told Amara the full truth?"
Daniel became uncomfortable.
"Yes."
"And?"
"She's upset."
Sophia sighed.
"She has every reason to be."
Daniel did not respond.
Sophia continued.
"Daniel, I want us to understand something. Whatever happens between you and Amara, our child must not suffer."
"I know."
"I don't want you making promises to her while giving me the impression that we're going to become a family again."
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"You know what I mean. Sometimes you act like you want to be with Amara, and other times you behave as though you're trying to keep me emotionally attached."
Daniel became silent.
Sophia continued.
"I don't want to be anyone's second choice. I want a peaceful environment for my child."
Daniel realised that he had been so focused on his feelings that he had not considered how confusing his behaviour might be for Sophia.
"I understand," he said.
"Good. We need clear boundaries."
The call ended.
That evening, Amara sat by her bedroom window.
Her phone was beside her.
There were two conversations she kept thinking about.
Daniel represented four years of memories, promises and a love she had once believed would last forever.
Michael represented something unfamiliar.
A possibility.
A chance to experience a relationship without constantly questioning her worth.
She did not know whether Michael loved her.
She did not even know whether she was ready to love someone new.
But she knew she could not continue living between two worlds.
Her phone vibrated.
It was a message from Michael.
Michael: I hope tomorrow is kinder to you than today. Have a peaceful night.
She smiled.
A few seconds later, another message arrived.
This time, it was Daniel.
Daniel: Amara, I know I've hurt you. I am not asking you to forgive me tonight. I only hope you haven't completely given up on us.
She read both messages.
Then she switched off her phone.
For once, she wanted to hear her own thoughts without anyone asking her to choose.
But the choice she was avoiding would soon become impossible to escape.
Because Daniel was about to discover something that would change his understanding of the entire situation.
And Michael was about to reveal that his feelings for Amara were deeper than friendship..
