The truth has a way of finding its way into places where lies have been carefully hidden.
Daniel believed that the worst part of his mistake was already known.
He had admitted that he cheated.
He had accepted that Sophia was pregnant.
He had apologised to Amara.
But there was something he had never fully explained.
And it was about to change everything.
One afternoon, Daniel received a call from Sophia.
"Hello."
"Daniel, are you busy?"
"A little. What's wrong?"
"I need to discuss something with you."
"Can we talk later?"
"No. It's important."
Daniel sighed.
"Okay. What happened?"
Sophia paused.
"I found some old messages."
"What messages?"
"Messages from when we first started talking."
Daniel became uncomfortable.
"Why are you going through old messages?"
"Because I was looking for something. And I found the conversation where you told me you were single."
He closed his eyes.
Sophia continued.
"You told me you had ended your previous relationship months before we met."
Daniel said nothing.
"Daniel, was that true?"
He struggled to answer.
"Sophia, I already told you I made mistakes."
"That isn't what I'm asking."
He lowered his voice.
"I was still with Amara at the time."
Sophia became silent.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then she asked:
"So you lied to both of us?"
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"I didn't plan for things to happen that way."
"That doesn't answer my question."
"I'm sorry."
Sophia's voice became emotional.
"You made me believe I was entering a relationship with a single man. I didn't know there was another woman who had been with you for years."
Daniel remained quiet.
Sophia continued.
"I apologised to Amara because I genuinely felt bad when I discovered the truth. But you allowed me to believe something that wasn't true."
"I know."
"Why didn't you tell me from the beginning?"
"I was afraid you would leave."
Sophia gave a bitter laugh.
"So you protected yourself by deceiving both of us?"
Daniel had no answer.
The call ended shortly afterwards.
He sat in his car for several minutes.
He knew Sophia was right.
That evening, Daniel visited Kelechi.
"I think I've made everything worse."
Kelechi looked at him.
"What happened?"
Daniel explained the conversation.
Kelechi shook his head.
"You still haven't learned."
"I thought telling Amara everything would hurt her more."
"Or you were afraid she would walk away permanently."
Daniel looked down.
Kelechi continued.
"You cannot build a future on selected truths. If you want to be honest, you must be completely honest."
Daniel nodded slowly.
The following day, he called Amara.
"Can we meet?"
"What's wrong?"
"I need to tell you something."
"Can't you tell me over the phone?"
"I would rather speak to you face-to-face."
Amara sensed something serious in his voice.
"Okay. Tomorrow."
They met at the same restaurant where they had previously discussed reconciliation.
Daniel arrived early.
When Amara arrived, she noticed that he looked worried.
"What's happening?"
Daniel took a deep breath.
"There is something I should have told you a long time ago."
Amara sat down.
"Go on."
"When Sophia and I started talking, I told her I was single."
Amara stared at him.
"What?"
"I told her that my previous relationship had ended."
"Daniel, our relationship had not ended."
"I know."
"Then why would you tell her that?"
"I was afraid she wouldn't want anything to do with me if she knew about you."
Amara felt her stomach tighten.
"So you lied to her?"
"Yes."
"And you lied to me too, because you never told me the full story."
Daniel lowered his head.
"I'm sorry."
Amara looked away.
She had thought she already knew the worst of his betrayal.
But apparently, there were more details waiting to hurt her.
"How long were you telling her that you were single?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Daniel!"
"Several weeks."
Amara pushed her chair back slightly.
"Several weeks?"
He nodded.
She stared at him.
"Do you understand what you're telling me?"
"I do."
"No, you don't. You allowed another woman to believe she was building something with an available man while you were still coming back to me and telling me you loved me."
Daniel tried to speak.
"Please, let me explain."
"What explanation can make this better?"
"I was confused."
Amara shook her head.
"You weren't confused. You knew exactly what you were doing."
She stood up.
"Amara, please."
"I need to go."
"Can we finish this conversation?"
"No, Daniel. Not today."
She picked up her handbag.
Daniel watched her leave.
This time, he did not follow her.
He understood that another apology would not erase what she had just discovered.
That night, Amara cried.
Not because she had suddenly stopped loving Daniel.
But because she was beginning to understand that the man she loved had been capable of deceiving her in ways she had never imagined.
She called Teni.
"Hello?"
Teni immediately recognised the sadness in her voice.
"Amara, what's wrong?"
"He lied again."
"What happened?"
Amara explained everything.
Teni listened without interrupting.
When she finished, Teni said quietly:
"Amara, how many times must someone show you who they are before you believe them?"
Amara wiped her face.
"I don't know anymore."
"Please don't let your memories make decisions for your future."
Amara remained silent.
For the first time, she seriously considered walking away from Daniel forever.
