Chapter 17 - CHAPTER SIXTEEN: THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

Amara had always believed that the truth, no matter how painful, was better than living in a beautiful lie.

Unfortunately, she was beginning to discover that some truths could change everything in a single night.

It was a Thursday evening.

She had returned from work tired and hungry. After taking a shower, she changed into a comfortable dress and went downstairs to prepare something to eat.

Her phone was on the dining table when a notification appeared.

It was from Teni.

Teni: Are you home?

Amara: Yes. Why?

Teni: I need to discuss something with you.

Amara: Is everything okay?

Teni took a few minutes before replying.

Teni: Yes, but I think you need to hear something. Can I come over?

Amara frowned.

Teni rarely asked permission to visit. Whenever she had something important to discuss, she usually appeared at the door without warning.

Amara: Of course. I'm home.

About thirty minutes later, Teni arrived.

Amara opened the door.

"What's happening? You sounded serious on the phone."

Teni entered and dropped her handbag on the sofa.

"Can I have some water first?"

Amara looked at her suspiciously.

"Teni, don't start. What happened?"

Teni collected the glass of water and took a sip.

"It's about Daniel."

Amara's expression changed.

"What about him?"

"I don't want you to misunderstand me, but I think you should know something."

Amara sat down.

"Go ahead."

Teni brought out her phone.

"Yesterday, I received a message from someone I know. She works with a woman who knows Sophia."

Amara became uncomfortable.

"What does Sophia have to do with this?"

"Apparently, there was an argument between Sophia and Daniel."

Amara sighed.

"Teni, I don't want to keep hearing about Daniel's problems with Sophia. They need to settle whatever they have between themselves."

"I agree. But what happened concerns you too."

Amara looked at her.

"How?"

Teni hesitated.

"Apparently, Sophia discovered that Daniel had been telling different stories about his relationship with her and his relationship with you."

Amara shook her head.

"That's not new information. I already know he lied."

"There's more."

Teni showed her a screenshot of a conversation.

Amara read it carefully.

The conversation suggested that Daniel had told someone he was trying to reconcile with Amara while keeping Sophia hopeful about a possible future together.

Amara placed the phone down.

"Is this real?"

"I cannot confirm every detail. But I think you should ask Daniel directly."

Amara leaned back.

For a moment, she said nothing.

She had hoped Daniel would finally understand the importance of honesty. Instead, it seemed he was still creating confusion in everyone's life.

"I am tired, Teni."

"I know."

"Why can't he just be honest?"

Teni reached for her hand.

"Because he may be more interested in getting what he wants than accepting the consequences of his actions."

Amara looked away.

She wanted to disagree, but she couldn't find the words.

Her phone suddenly rang.

Daniel.

She stared at the screen.

Teni looked at her.

"Answer him."

Amara picked up.

"Hello."

"Good evening, Amara."

"Good evening."

"How was your day?"

"Fine."

"Are you home?"

"Yes."

Daniel paused.

"Can I come over?"

"Why?"

"I want to see you."

Amara looked at Teni.

"Daniel, I need to ask you something."

"Okay."

"Are you still making promises to Sophia about your future together?"

There was silence.

"What?"

"You heard me."

Daniel cleared his throat.

"Who told you that?"

"Does it matter who told me? I'm asking you a question."

"Amara, things are not what they seem."

She closed her eyes.

"Then explain."

Daniel sighed.

"Can we discuss this in person?"

"No. I want an answer."

"Amara, I have told Sophia that I will take responsibility for my child. That doesn't mean I want to marry her."

"Did you tell her that you still hoped to rebuild a relationship with me?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Yes."

"Did you also tell her that?"

He became quiet.

Amara understood the silence.

"Daniel?"

"Amara, please."

She laughed bitterly.

"Do you know what your problem is? You want everyone to understand you, but you refuse to understand what your actions are doing to other people."

"I am trying to make things right."

"Then why are you still creating confusion?"

"I don't want to lose you."

"Daniel, you cannot keep people around you by giving them different promises."

He sighed.

"Please don't end things because of what someone told you."

Amara became still.

"End what, Daniel? What exactly are we?"

He struggled to answer.

"We are trying to rebuild."

"Are we? Because I am beginning to think I am the only person taking this seriously."

"That's not true."

"Then tell me the truth. What exactly have you promised Sophia?"

Daniel was silent.

Finally, he said, "I told her that I would always be there for her and the baby."

"That's not what I'm asking."

"I told her we would discuss our situation after the baby arrives."

Amara's heart sank.

"So you have left the door open for a relationship with her?"

"Amara, I was only trying to avoid unnecessary arguments."

She shook her head.

"Do you hear yourself?"

"I didn't mean it that way."

"Then what way did you mean it?"

Daniel became frustrated.

"Amara, I am trying to make everyone happy."

"That is not your responsibility. Your responsibility is to be honest with everyone."

She ended the call.

Teni watched her quietly.

"Are you okay?"

Amara shook her head.

"No."

She stood up and walked towards the window.

For several minutes, she watched the cars passing outside.

She remembered Daniel's letter.

His promises beneath the moonlight.

Their conversations.

The evening they kissed.

Had she been too quick to believe that things were changing?

Her phone rang again.

This time, it was Michael.

She hesitated before answering.

"Hello."

"Hi, Amara. I hope I'm not disturbing you."

"No. It's okay."

"You sound tired."

"I am."

"Everything alright?"

Amara considered telling him what had happened.

But she didn't want to bring another person into her complicated situation.

"I'm fine. Just had a long day."

"Okay. I won't keep you long. I wanted to remind you about the event tomorrow."

She had completely forgotten.

"What event?"

"The professional networking event we discussed last week."

"Oh, yes. Thank you for reminding me."

"Would you still like to attend?"

Amara looked at Teni.

"Yes. I would."

"Great. I'll send you the details."

"Thank you, Michael."

"You're welcome. Have a peaceful evening."

After the call, Teni smiled.

"Michael seems thoughtful."

Amara gave her a warning look.

"Please don't start."

"I'm not starting anything. I'm simply observing."

Amara laughed weakly.

Later that night, she received another call.

This time, the caller was Sophia.

Amara stared at the number.

They had exchanged contacts during their earlier conversation, but Sophia had rarely called her.

She answered.

"Hello?"

"Good evening, Amara."

"Good evening, Sophia."

"Please, I hope I'm not disturbing you."

"No. What's wrong?"

Sophia took a deep breath.

"I think we need to talk."

Amara became uncomfortable.

"About what?"

"Daniel."

Amara closed her eyes.

"Okay."

Sophia continued.

"I know you and Daniel have been trying to work things out. I don't want to interfere with whatever decision you make, but I think you deserve to know something."

Amara sat down.

"Go ahead."

"When Daniel and I first started talking, he told me that he was no longer in a relationship. He made me believe he was single."

Amara remained silent.

"I only discovered the truth much later. When I confronted him, he apologised and said he had made a mistake."

Sophia paused.

"But recently, I discovered that he was still making promises to me while trying to get back with you."

Amara felt a familiar heaviness in her chest.

"Why are you telling me this?"

"Because I don't want you to think I am deliberately trying to come between you and Daniel. I am pregnant with his child, and I cannot change that. But I don't want to be part of a situation where everyone is being deceived."

Amara swallowed.

"I appreciate your honesty."

Sophia continued.

"I also want you to understand something. I am not expecting Daniel to marry me simply because I am carrying his child. But I need him to be responsible."

"He should be."

"Exactly."

There was a brief silence.

Then Sophia said something Amara wasn't expecting.

"I think Daniel needs to decide what he really wants, but more importantly, he needs to stop making promises he cannot keep."

Amara looked down.

"You're right."

"I am sorry for everything that has happened."

Amara sighed.

"I know you didn't know about me at first. But I hope we can all find peace."

"I hope so too."

They ended the call.

Amara remained seated for a long time.

She had spent weeks trying to understand Daniel's behaviour.

She had given him room to explain.

She had listened to his apologies.

She had even allowed herself to believe that their relationship might survive.

But that night, she realised that the problem was no longer simply about what Daniel had done in the past.

It was about what he was continuing to do in the present.

At exactly 11:47 p.m., another message arrived.

It was from Daniel.

Daniel: Amara, please don't let tonight destroy everything we've been trying to rebuild.

She read it.

Another message followed.

Daniel: I love you. I know I have made mistakes, but I want a future with you.

Amara stared at the screen.

Then she typed.

Amara: Daniel, I cannot continue building a future with someone who keeps creating confusion in the present. I need space. Please respect that.

She sent the message.

Daniel read it almost immediately.

He called.

Amara declined the call.

He tried again.

She switched off her phone.

Across town, Daniel sat alone in his living room.

For the first time, he understood that Amara's silence might not be temporary.

He had spent so much time trying to convince her that he loved her that he had forgotten the most important part of love.

Respect.

And now, the woman he had once taken for granted was finally learning how to live without him.

But Daniel's troubles were far from over.

The following morning, an unexpected visitor would arrive at his office with information that could change everything.

And this time, the secret would not be about Sophia or Amara.

It would be about Daniel himself.
