My mother was already halfway to the door before I could process her enthusiasm. She grabbed her bag, checked her reflection in the hallway mirror, and turned back to me with an expression that brooked no argument.
"Well? What are you waiting for? Go get your shoes on."
I laughed, shaking my head. "Mom, we can't just show up at the Halton's mansion unannounced."
"Why not? He's practically family already."
"Because it's polite to call first?"
She waved her hand dismissively. "Nonsense. Young people these days are too formal. In my day, we just showed up. It showed you cared."
I opened my mouth to argue, then closed it. There was no winning against my mother when she got like this. Besides, part of me loved her enthusiasm. It had been so long since she'd been this excited about anything.
