The room slowly thawed after Minerva's exit. Grandmother Halton picked up her teacup as if nothing had happened, but I noticed her hands trembled slightly. Mr. Halton had retreated into his newspaper, though I doubted he was reading a single word.
My mother, bless her, was already flipping through her notebook. "Now, about those flowers. Alayna, you mentioned you liked peonies?"
I blinked, trying to refocus. "What? Oh. Yes, peonies are beautiful. But aren't they out of season?"
Grandmother Halton waved her hand. "We have connections. Peonies can be arranged."
"Then peonies it is," my mother said, scribbling in her notebook. "Now, colors. Alayna, you said something about soft pink and ivory?"
I nodded, grateful for the distraction. "Yes. Nothing too bright. Soft and romantic."
"Excellent choices," Grandmother Halton approved. "They'll complement the ballroom beautifully. The ivory walls, the gold accents, soft pink will be perfect."
