Chapter 42 - Forces of Power

Lucifer and Lilith stood unshaken amid the ruin of the Eternal Springs, two ancient forces locked in silent opposition. Asmodeus watched from a half-step behind his lord, the anticipation of confrontation twisting through him like a blade. Anxiety carved deep lines across his face; every muscle in his body screamed the same warning his mind refused to voice.

Damn it. Even with Lord Lucifer's power, it would have been optimal to never allow Lilith to resurrect. And there's no telling how much power she gained from the springs.

Asmodeus clenched his jaw and forced what little composure remained to hold.

Lilith's lips curved into a cold, triumphant smirk.

"That's game, little Luci. You played well… but you lost. I have resurrected, and your forces are decimated. Grovel now, and I may accept your surrender."

Lucifer's answer was laughter—low, rich, and utterly unafraid.

"True, my forces are decimated. But I, along with Asmodeus, are more than enough to defeat you."

Silence fell like a guillotine. The air itself thickened. Lilith's eyes narrowed, and she unleashed her magic presence without another word. Sinister, ancient energy flooded the clearing in a tidal wave, thick enough to taste—copper and ash and something older than names. Asmodeus's eyes flew wide; his expression cracked. Instinct roared at him to flee, to drop to his knees, to vanish before that power crushed him.

Lucifer answered in kind. His own presence rose to meet hers—great, regal, and sharp as a drawn blade. Yet it was not as potent, not as vast. Their auras collided and wrestled across the broken ground, Lilith's overwhelming force pressing down while Lucifer's held its ground with stubborn, defiant pride.

In that moment a cold realization settled over Lucifer like frost. Even with Asmodeus at his side… victory was no longer certain.

He withdrew his presence. The pressure eased. Lilith paused, curiosity flickering across her features at the sudden shift.

"Lilith." Lucifer's voice was quiet, measured. "Even with Asmodeus on my side, I see no clear victory. I trust you are wise enough to realize this is not only true for our side, but for all sides. This fight may result in the death of one and the crippling of the other. The seven princes have already taken heavy losses, as you are aware. Satan is in critical condition. Abaddon and Mammon are dead. Beelzebub's presence has vanished entirely. Belphegor's magic still lingers, but it is weak and scattered. That means we may already have three dead and two of us injured in the worst case—but even in the best case, the demon hierarchy will be shaken."

Lilith's tone dripped condescension.

"And that concerns me how?"

"Demon families and others in our race with ambition or hate will see the opportunity and capitalize. We both cannot afford such. I propose a truce. You return with us to rule as the interim Demon Queen while the princes rebuild our power and influence."

Lucifer's voice remained cold and calculated, every word deliberate.

"Lord Lucifer—" Asmodeus began, stepping forward.

"Quiet." The single command froze him in place.

Lilith's smirk returned, sharper than before.

"You mean I come rule while you rebuild your power. Luci, you must take me for a fool."

"No." Lucifer shook his head slowly. "I could never. Remember—I gave up my seat beside my father for you. My admiration for you is great. I would never attempt such a simple ruse."

As he spoke, he laid Dark Prince carefully upon the cracked earth at his feet, the gesture open and deliberate.

Lilith studied him for a long moment.

"Okay then, Luci. I agree… on the basis that I get to choose replacements for the princes. I want my influence felt."

She knew precisely what the condition cost him. Lucifer knew it too.

"I agre—"

The springs behind Lilith detonated.

A thunderous explosion of water and raw magic ripped the lakeside apart. Steam and luminous spray billowed outward. And there, standing at the edge of the churning lake, was Elliot—magic power rolling off his body in visible, crackling waves.

Before any of the demons could so much as tense, Elliot exploded forward.

The ground cracked beneath his first step. Air screamed around him as he crossed the distance in a blur of raw, surging power. Lucifer's eyes widened a fraction—too late to fully evade. Elliot's fist crashed toward him. Lucifer threw both arms up in a crossed guard. The impact detonated like a thunderclap. Shockwaves ripped outward in concentric rings, shattering stone, whipping water from the ruined lake into glittering arcs, and forcing Asmodeus a full step backward. Dust and ancient debris bloomed into the air.

For a heartbeat no one moved.

The sheer leap in Elliot's strength hung in the silence like a second explosion. Power rolled off him in visible waves—hot, unrefined, and far greater than anything they had sensed from him before.

Elliot's other fist was already drawing back, muscles coiling for a follow-up blow that promised to split the earth itself.

"Stop."

Lilith's voice cut through the chaos like a blade of ice. Absolute. Unyielding.

Elliot froze mid-motion, fist still raised, chest heaving. Confusion flickered across his face.

"Why?"

Lilith stepped forward, her presence no longer a weapon but a quiet, immovable wall.

"The situation is handled. I will leave with Lucifer… and all the demons."

Elliot's eyes narrowed. The power around him flared in protest.

"No. You can't—"

"My mind is made up."

There was no room for argument in her tone. Only finality.

Something inside Elliot cracked. The fury in his gaze fractured into something rawer, more desperate.

"Without you… I am nothing. I lack a purpose."

Lilith regarded him for a long, measuring moment. Then her voice softened—not with kindness, but with the cold clarity of someone stating an immutable truth.

"You are too weak for me to stay with."

As the words left her lips, the cost of Elliot's earlier charge made itself known. Fresh blood welled from wounds that had only just begun to close, dark lines racing down his arms, his side, the corner of his mouth. He swayed, but did not fall—still staring at her as if she were the only fixed point in a collapsing world.

Lilith continued, each syllable deliberate.

"If you want me to follow you… you must become more than a torch I light. You must become a flame that can guide me."

She moved then—swift, precise, without wasted motion. Her fist struck his face with the sound of final judgment. Elliot's head snapped sideways. The light in his eyes went out. His body crumpled to the fractured ground and did not rise.

Lilith turned away without looking back.

She rose into the air. Lucifer retrieved Dark Prince in silence and followed. Asmodeus ascended with them, the three of them climbing through the smoke and dying light. Below, the battlefield of Tarth still roared—steel on flesh, screams, the crack of magic—but Lilith's voice cut across the distance with absolute authority.

"Call them off."

Lucifer inclined his head. "Asmodeus."

The Sin of Lust closed his eyes. A single, precise pulse of demonic will radiated outward, touching every remaining commander, every lieutenant, every lesser demon still fighting within sight of Tarth's walls.

Withdraw. The Queen commands it. Leave the city. Now.

The order was absolute.

Near the ruined western gate, Adriano stumbled through the wreckage, one hand pressed to a seared shoulder, the other dragging his massive blade. He found Eddard lying in a shallow crater of broken stone and blood, the scarred body still, the wolf pendant gone.

Adriano dropped to one knee, breathing hard, and managed a crooked, exhausted grin.

"Wow… you took out a prince as well. You have so many tricks, Eddard."

A guttural roar answered him.

A fresh wave of demons—dozens of them, blades and claws raised—charged from the smoke, sensing easy prey. Adriano's grin vanished. He forced himself upright, planted his feet, and raised the buster sword with both trembling arms. A raw, defiant scream tore from his throat as he prepared to meet them alone.

Then the charge faltered.

One by one the demons slowed, heads snapping upward as if hearing a voice no human could detect. Confusion flickered across their faces. Blades lowered. The front ranks turned. Within heartbeats the entire wave broke, scrambling backward, then fleeing in full retreat toward the open plains.

Adriano stood frozen, sword still raised, watching the enemy melt away.

Across the battlefield the same invisible command rippled outward.

Jeremiah, blood-slick and lightning still crackling faintly around his fists, watched the demons that had been pressing him suddenly abandon their assault. He staggered, chest heaving, and looked toward the distant springs where an ancient presence had just flared and then withdrawn.

Raymond, barely upright near the shattered gate, felt the pressure on his dual blades ease. The demons pressing him simply… stopped. They turned and ran. He lowered his swords, confusion and relief warring across his exhausted face.

Cranel and Hamza, standing amid the corpses of lesser demons near the princes' former position, felt the shift in the air. Cranel's crimson eyes narrowed. Hamza, one-armed and blood-drenched, gave a single grim nod as the remaining enemy forces began to pull back in disciplined waves.

Lenen, half-conscious in the crater beside his brother, sensed the mental command pass through the horde like a cold wind. He exhaled a shaky breath of something close to relief, then tightened his grip on Ukobathan's scorched hand.

On the walls, Zarim archers and soldiers watched in stunned silence as the vast demonic host that had threatened to swallow their city simply turned and withdrew, melting into the dusk like a tide going out.

Above the ruined springs, Lilith, Lucifer, and Asmodeus vanished into the darkening sky, leaving only the unconscious form of Elliot beside the still-smoking water—and a city that had survived, barely, to count its dead and its living.
