Madison Barton flinched at the words, her hand trembled, spilling some water from the cup onto the blanket.
She shook her head urgently: "No, please don't tell them, I don't want them to know about this."
"Alright then." The man nodded.
After a moment of contemplation, Madison Barton looked at the kind-faced man and said: "Could I trouble you with something?"
"What is it? Tell me."
"I would like to borrow your phone to make a call."
"Sure, here you go." The man placed the phone beside the hospital bed and tactfully stepped outside.
Her hands, trembling, picked up the phone and then put it down again, unable to muster the courage to dial that familiar number.
She longed to hear his voice; perhaps then her heart wouldn't hurt so much.
Finally, the call was made, and that familiar voice reached her ears.
"Hello, who is this?"
Before she could speak, she hurriedly hung up.
Tears poured down again.
She hated it so much.
