He was just about to leap forward through the fiery gap, when suddenly, a voice hissed from the side, "Avada Kedavra!"

The sickening green stream of instant death came hurtling at him. His superior, battle-honed instincts were the only thing that saved him.

He instinctively jumped hard to the side, avoiding the deadly curse by a mere fraction of an inch.

The fiery hole he had just burned into the hedges closed up completely. He caught a final, fleeting glimpse of Harry's and Fleur's horrified faces looking towards where he had been, trying to see if he had survived the killing curse.

"Percy!" he heard Fleur cry out, her voice filled with terror and anguish. But she said nothing more as the magical fauna completely sealed the path, leaving Percy separated from them, alone with his attacker.

The demigod quickly got to his feet and turned around to face the man who had just tried to kill him.

The man was still shrouded in the shadows of the maze, hiding. Percy leveled his wand, his eyes narrowed, his heart pounding with a mixture of fear and rage.

"So," he called out, his voice steady despite the adrenaline, "you are a Death Eater, huh? I 'ave to say, after all the build-up, I kind of expected more."

"Really? Did you expect this then?" the shadowy figure asked, his voice a low, gravelly rasp. He stepped out from the shadows and into the dim pathway, facing Percy directly.

The demigod's eyes went wide with utter shock, recognizing the man immediately. "Pr-Professor Moody?" he stammered, his mind struggling to comprehend what he was seeing.

The man with the swirling, glowing blue magical eye smiled, a cruel, triumphant smile. "Aye, lad. That is me. Did you expect someone else, perhaps?"

Percy quickly pushed his shock and surprise aside. This was a battle. This was war. "Yeah," he said, his voice turning cold, "I 'alf-expected it to be Malfoy's dad."

"Malfoy? Bah!" the man spat. "That boot-licking coward is not even fit to lick the Master's shoes! I am his greatest, most loyal follower! Me! Not anyone else."

"I 'ardly think an ex-Auror, a famous dark wizard catcher, is a Death Eater," Percy scoffed, trying to buy himself some time, to think, to plan. "So, what is it then? Polyjuice Potion?"

The man's smirk widened. "A clever boy, you are. I must say, I am really rethinking my decision not to sign off on your NEWT pass. You really could pass those exams with flying colors."

Percy's eyes went wide again, this time with a different kind of shock. "Y-you mean, all this time... you were our teacher?! You have been teaching us DADA all year?!"

The fake Moody laughed, a harsh, cackling sound. "You have not figured that out yet, boy? Yes! It has always been me! Hah! I cannot say I blame you for not noticing, though. I even managed to completely fool the great Albus Dumbledore himself with my brilliant acting!"

Percy growled, his anger rising. "Yeah... so why show yourself now? I get that you are 'ere to kill me, but why now? Why not earlier?"

The fake Moody snarled, his face contorting with rage. "Because you were going to go and win the damn thing, you idiot!"

Percy blinked, confused. "What? What are you talking about?"

"Why do you think I put Potter's name in the damn Goblet of Fire in the first place?!" the man roared. "It would be the perfect chance to snatch him up! In 'ere, in this maze, no one can see, no one would suspect a single thing! It was the perfect plan!"

"The cup... the cup is a Portkey," Percy replied, the final pieces of the puzzle clicking into place in his mind.

The man grinned, a crazed, triumphant look in his eyes. "Very clever indeed, Jackson. So, you see now, do not you? That is why I could not let you win. You are not the one my Master seeks."

Percy growled, the name like poison on his tongue. "Voldemort."

"Exactly."

And then, the tension broke. Like an unspoken, mutual agreement, the time for talking was over. They both moved at the same time, firing spells at each other with deadly intent.

Percy had to jump and weave from spot to spot, desperately avoiding every single dark curse the imposter sent hurtling at him.

It was like watching a deadly light show on the Fourth of July, except these bright, colorful flashes of light were just as deadly as any firework.

The lights blazed past him, some sizzling as they hit the hedges.

The demigod sent out his own stunners and bludgeoning curses, but he was not used to actual, life-or-death wizardry combat. His spells were clumsy, his aim not as precise as it needed to be.

"You are going to have to do better than that, boy!" the man growled, sending a sickly, orange-colored spell flying at him.

It flew right over Percy's head and hit the shrubbery behind him, turning it instantly to black, crumbling dust on impact.

Percy knew then, with a chilling certainty, that this was not a game. He was in a real fight for his life. He

ran behind a nearby corner for cover and fired off a series of suppressing fire spells, forcing the fake Moody to be held back for a moment.

The Death Eater was forced to send curses that either hit the hedges beside them or flew harmlessly past Percy's hiding spot.

The demigod had a brief moment to breathe, to think. He realized then and there, with a sinking feeling, that he was not much of a fighter when it came to a real, high-stakes wizarding duel.

That much was true. He loved magic, he loved creating new things and new spells, but he had no real experience using all of that creative knowledge in a fast-paced, deadly combat situation.

So, he needed to switch back to what he knew best. He needed to fight on his own terms. Or else he was going to die right here in this stupid maze.

So, he put his wand away, sheathing it safely inside his hidden wrist holster. He reached deep into the pocket of his robes, his fingers searching for something familiar.

And there it was. There it always was, waiting for him.
