Miss Claire did not answer immediately.
She remained seated against the raised hospital bed, one hand resting lightly atop the blanket as her gaze drifted toward the large window overlooking the private gardens outside.
Morning sunlight spilled across the polished floor, reflecting faintly against the pristine white walls and expensive furnishings that made the room feel more like a luxury suite than a hospital ward.
Only after drawing in a breath did she finally speak.
"It is not wise to jump to conclusions."
Her voice carried the same composed elegance it always did, revealing almost nothing.
"But..." she continued after a brief pause, "...it certainly is a possibility."
She neither denied nor dismissed the idea.
Or perhaps she simply couldn't.
The fact that Don had voiced the suspicion meant he had reached the same conclusion she had quietly been considering ever since the accident.
Don's expression hardly shifted.
