Chapter 228 - In the Shadows of Friendship Ch. 03

Chapter 03:

Two weeks had dragged themselves past since Gokarna. Campus had gone quiet the way it only does during winter break, that particular hush where footsteps on gravel sound louder than they should and the fog sitting low on the lawns feels like it has actual weight pressing down on everything. Most students had gone home. The ones who remained were either chasing project deadlines or simply too restless to sit across from family.

Ankur was the second kind, though he would have said the first if anyone had thought to ask.

Something had shifted between him and Priya since the trip. Nothing was named and nothing had been said out loud, but when they walked together across the empty campus and their hands accidentally brushed, his pulse did something it had absolutely no business doing, and he was fairly certain she felt it too because she didn't pull away. That counted for something, even if he hadn't figured out what.

She still had a boyfriend. The same one as always. The one who called too often and said too little that was actually kind. She kept telling herself things would improve after college ended, after they were living in the same city, after the pressure of final year finally lifted off both of them. She had been telling herself this for long enough that it had stopped sounding like hope and started sounding like a script she'd memorized for a play she no longer wanted to be in. What happened in Gokarna she had called a mistake, a drunken blur she wasn't ready to open up and look at directly. But the memory of Ankur's hands on her, the way he had looked at her that night like she was the only thing in the room, that sat inside her somewhere she couldn't reach to push it back down.

Som and Ritika weren't bothering to pretend anything. They were easy and warm with each other, openly affectionate in the way people are when they've made peace with the fact that something has a natural end point. Both of them seemed to share a quiet understanding that this was a last-semester thing, no strings pulled tight enough to hurt anyone, no promises made about what came after. Just the pleasure of being genuinely close to someone while you still had the time.

In some strange way the trip had pulled all four of them tighter rather than apart. There were things none of them said out loud, glances that stayed a beat too long, a particular kind of charged tension that only exists when everyone has agreed, without ever discussing it, to pretend nothing has fundamentally changed.

It was Christmas week. Ankur was lying on his hostel bed staring at the ceiling with the lamp off and the cold pressing at the window, his head busy with thoughts he hadn't asked it to produce. He didn't know what was happening with Priya. And Ritika. God, Ritika. She had been his Didi for two years, his default reference point when he needed perspective or a push, and now he couldn't think about her without the images from Gokarna surfacing like they had been patiently waiting in line. Som between her thighs, his mouth working her pussy, her moans filling that small room, her back arching off the mattress in a long slow curve. He had tried, genuinely tried, to file those images somewhere they wouldn't affect him. It wasn't working. His cock stirred just lying there in the dark thinking about it.

He picked up his phone and opened WhatsApp. Ritika was online.

He almost put the phone down. Then a message came in before he could talk himself out of it.

Ritika: Bro. Bonfire tonight? The students are organizing one.

Ankur: Sure. Could use the air. It's too cold to do nothing.

Ritika: I asked Priya but she said no. Is she okay? She's seemed off.

Ankur: She'll be fine. She's been quiet. Doesn't share much with me lately.

He stared at the screen for a moment. Then he typed it, all of it. What had happened between him and Priya in Gokarna, the guilt eating her alive since, the silence she had built carefully around the whole thing.

Ritika: See. We do notice things. There was definitely something between you two on the trip. And now she's different.

Ankur: You know why it happened?

Ritika: Obvious. You've always liked her.

He smiled at that. Then typed faster than he'd planned to.

Ankur: Yeah. That's part of it. But also... we saw you and Som. Both nights. You thought we were asleep. We weren't. We saw everything.

He sent it and immediately felt his heart rate spike. A few minutes passed. He watched the ticks turn blue. No reply came. He started wondering if he had just destroyed something important.

Then, Ritika: Damn. I have no words.

Ritika: Were you terrified when you saw us?

Ankur: The second night yes, that's what pushed me and Priya over the edge after you two went for your walk. But the first night, Priya was actually asleep. Only I was awake. And Ritika Didi, I won't lie to you, I didn't look away. I couldn't. And I got turned on watching you. I wanted to be where Som was. I wanted you.

The message sat there on the screen. He read it back and felt slightly insane for having sent it.

She burst out laughing. He could tell from the voice note she sent, she couldn't stop herself, full genuine laughter that made him feel both relieved and ridiculous at the same time.

Ritika: Oh god. Okay. If you and Priya actually become a thing properly, we will plan a threesome. You, me, and Priya.

He knew it was a joke. He was ninety percent sure it was a joke. But the ten percent that wasn't sat in him warm and strange, and he couldn't entirely shake the image that had assembled itself in his head without being invited.

Ankur: Don't say that to Priya. She would actually die.

Ritika: Relax, Romeo.

He put the phone down. The relief of having said all of it out loud, the watching and the wanting and the guilt, was real and immediate. But his mind didn't quiet the way he'd hoped. It went straight back to Gokarna, not to Priya this time, but to Ritika. Her smell, the sounds she made, the slick wet heat of what Som had been doing to her pussy, the way her voice had broken apart when she came. He lay there in the dark and his hand moved before he had fully decided to let it. He thought about Ritika, then about Priya, then about all three of them together in a room the way Ritika had joked about, and it wasn't funny anymore, it was just vivid and relentless. He came hard with his mind still running, guilt and want wound so tightly together he couldn't tell where one ended and the other started. And the thing that stayed with him afterward, lying there in the cooling dark, was that it hadn't been enough. He wanted more. Of what exactly he couldn't have said clearly. He just knew the wanting wasn't finished with him yet.

One foggy evening a few days later, the four of them were cutting through campus when Som noticed that the security was barely functioning. The guards had bunched themselves around a fire at the hostel entrance, hoods pulled up against the cold, not remotely interested in who was coming or going. The fog was doing most of the work for them anyway.

Som looked at Ritika and grinned. "We could sneak you two in. No more freezing out on the lawns. A proper night inside the hostel for once."

Ritika's eyes lit up immediately. "Are you serious?"

"Completely. Last few months of college. Let's at least make them worth something."

The plan went into the group chat within minutes. Meet at the campus café at ten PM, after dinner, guards changing shifts, cold keeping everyone indoors and uninterested.

Priya responded almost immediately.

Priya: Are we really doing this? If we get caught this could go very badly.

Ankur and Som fired back reassurances in quick succession. Ritika added her own.

Ritika: It's our last few months with these idiots. Come on.

Priya: What are we even doing once we're in?

Ritika: Rum. Neat. Whiskey. Cigarettes. I'm thinking of trying one.

Priya: No way. I have an early call tomorrow with family and my boyfriend. Not drinking.

Ankur read that and understood the subtext sitting underneath it. Gokarna. The loss of control. The thing she still hadn't figured out how to carry. She was keeping a tighter grip on herself now, and he understood why even if it made him ache a little.

He suggested a movie. Ritika dismissed it with the particular contempt she reserved for things that weren't ambitious enough. Som offered an alternative.

Som: Here's what we do. Me and Ritika take my room. You and Priya take Ankur's. We drink separately, talk, whatever. Then we meet up later.

The chat went quiet for a moment.

Ankur read it twice. Of course. He had known the moment he saw Som's name on the message that this was where it was going. He had seen what happened behind a closed door in Gokarna and he knew exactly what "me and Ritika take my room" meant in practice.

He looked at Priya's name on the screen and waited. The typing indicator appeared, then disappeared, then appeared again. She knew too. She was working out whether to say it out loud or just go along with it quietly.

Then: Okay. I guess it's fine. Followed by an emoji that wasn't entirely convinced.

She was coming. That meant something. He didn't let himself think too carefully about what.

By ten the campus had gone white with fog. The streetlights made soft blurred halos in it. Ankur was already by the café when he heard quiet footsteps and turned to find Priya and Ritika coming down the path looking like two first-year boys who had borrowed each other's wardrobes. Oversized hoodies, loose jeans, chunky sneakers, woolen caps pulled down over their hair. They had stuffed their bags in front of their chests to kill any visible curves.

Ankur gave them a thumbs-up. "You'd pass in daylight," he whispered.

They moved without lingering. Keep your head down, walk like you belong, don't make eye contact with the guards. A couple of boys headed in just ahead of them providing natural cover. The guards were entirely focused on the fire, rubbing warmth back into their hands, not looking at anything beyond the immediate radius of the flames.

The door clicked shut behind all four of them.

Relief came through the group at once, the kind that makes people want to laugh and also absolutely not make a sound. They split quickly. Som and Ritika slipped toward Room A-222 and Ankur led Priya down the corridor to A-216.

The group chat buzzed. Ritika: Mission successful. A string of laughing emojis followed. Ankur didn't send anything back. He locked the door and leaned against it for a second and let out a long slow breath.

Priya stood in the middle of his room taking it in. The stacked books, the open laptop on sleep mode, the general organised chaos of a boy who didn't hate tidiness but hadn't gotten around to it. The particular smell of a hostel room, deodorant and old paper and something faintly stale around the edges.

"Boys' hostels are genuinely a different ecosystem," she said, running a finger across the desk and looking at it. She dusted it off and sat on the edge of his bed.

"No fairy lights. No cushions. How are you not depressed in here?"

"You adjust," he said. "And we don't fight over the bathroom at seven AM."

She laughed and the room felt smaller and warmer from it.

They settled in and put on a film. Safe Haven. Ankur propped the laptop on the desk at the right angle and they slipped under the blanket side by side, shoulder to shoulder. The room was cold and the blanket was thin and neither of them moved away from the warmth of the other.

Priya was quiet through most of the movie, eyes on the screen but somewhere else entirely. Every so often she glanced at him, watching his face react to whatever was happening on screen, this small private observation she probably didn't realise she was making. When the film ended she let out a long breath.

"That character," she said, turning slightly toward him. "Katie. I feel like her sometimes. Running from a mess, holding onto something broken. And then someone kind turns up and makes you question everything you've been telling yourself."

He didn't say anything. Just listened.

They talked after that, about projects and placements and what came after all of this. But the conversation was moving under the surface too, Priya reaching toward something without quite being able to name it. Where she fit. Where he saw things going. What any of this actually was.

Time did what it does in quiet rooms. By the time they registered it, they were both lying flat on the bed under the blanket, facing each other, close enough that the warmth between them had nothing to do with the blanket anymore.

Priya put her hand gently on his chest.

"Four months," she said softly. "And then this is all done. College, this room, this feeling. All of it."

Her eyes drifted shut, not from sleep but from something more like trying to hold the moment still before it moved on without her.

Ankur looked at her. The faint yellow light caught her face. Her lips were slightly parted and his heart was loud in his own chest, and there was no alcohol to account for any of it. No Som and Ritika in the background creating something he could blame for pushing him over the edge. Just the two of them, completely awake, completely there, completely themselves.

"Priya," he said, voice low. "Kiss karein?"

She didn't open her eyes right away. But a small smile came to her lips and she leaned in and pressed them softly to his cheek.

His chest sank slightly. That wasn't what he'd meant and she probably knew it.

"Nahin, Priya," he said, quieter but clearer. "Kiss karein?"

The air between them changed. She opened her eyes and she was looking at him now in a way that had no performance in it at all, nervous and hungry and uncertain all at once, her chest rising faster than it had been a minute ago.

"I don't know," she whispered. Her voice barely existed.

He moved his face toward hers slowly, his nose brushing hers. She didn't pull back. She moved, just slightly, and then their lips met.

It was soft at first, barely there, two people checking whether this was actually real. For a moment nothing else existed, just the warmth of it, the silence of the room, the feeling of crossing a line they had been circling for months without admitting it.

Then Ankur deepened it, careful and slow, and Priya responded, not just with her mouth but with her body shifting closer, her chest pressing against his. Their noses bumped and they both smiled without breaking contact, and then something loosened in both of them at the same time and let go.

The kissing changed. Mouths open now, tongues meeting, a heat in it that didn't care anymore about being careful. Years of restraint dissolved all at once. Ankur kissed her the way he had imagined doing in the dark on too many nights, and she kissed him back with a desperation that told him she had been holding something like this back too. Her hands went behind his neck and pulled him closer. She sucked on his tongue and bit his lower lip and kissed him harder than before and he groaned into her mouth with a sound he couldn't have stopped if he'd tried.

His hand slid up her side, feeling the curve of her waist through the hoodie, needing more than fabric. Their legs tangled and their bodies pushed against each other. He cupped her face, kissed her jawline, down her chin, back up to her mouth, and she kissed him back like she was afraid of what would happen if she stopped.

Wet and breathless and messy, exactly the way real kisses are. They would break apart for a half second, eyes meeting in the low light, and then fall back into each other before either of them could think about it.

His hands found her boobs over the hoodie. He cupped them both and she gasped into his mouth, sharp and surprised, her fingers closing around his wrist, not pushing him away but gripping, something to hold on to while everything shifted. He kept kissing her slower now and kept his hands where they were, moving in a soft kneading rhythm, and her breathing came in uneven pulls against his lips.

He kissed down her jaw to her neck, open-mouthed, tongue against her skin, and she arched into it. He pressed his lips to the side of her throat and felt her pulse going hard beneath them. He moved lower, toward her collarbone, toward where her top hung open at the neck.

"No, Ankur," she breathed. "Please."

He stopped. Lifted his face. Waited.

She hadn't moved away. She was still right there, body still trembling faintly, eyes closed, chest rising and falling fast.

He went back to her neck. Kissed her ear, the soft hollow just beneath it, breathed slowly against her skin. Her grip on his wrist softened by degrees.

After a while his mouth drifted back down toward her collarbone. He slowed and left it there, not pushing, just present and warm against her skin.

She didn't stop him this time.

He sat up slightly and reached for the hem of her hoodie and lifted it slowly. It rose over her waist, past her stomach, past her chest. She raised her arms just enough to let it happen. Beneath it was a black bra, snug against her warm flushed skin.

He looked at her for a moment before he did anything else.

It wasn't the first time, technically. Gokarna had happened. But Gokarna had been vodka and impulse and everything slightly blurred at the edges, and this was a dim hostel room with the door locked and both of them completely sober and completely present, nothing to blame it on and nowhere to hide behind. That changed it entirely. This was a choice, made slowly and clearly, and it sat differently in him than anything before it.

His fingers grazed the edge of her bra. His eyes moved across her skin slowly. He leaned down and pressed his lips just above the fabric, feeling her heartbeat flutter against his mouth. Kissed her there, soft and unhurried. Then kissed a line down her stomach, over the warmth of her belly, and blew a slow breath across her navel. She shivered involuntarily, her back coming slightly off the mattress, fingers curling into the bedsheet.

He dragged his tongue into the hollow of her belly button.

"Oh god," she breathed.

His hands moved up and cupped her boobs through her bra, thumbs making slow circles. He pressed his mouth to her skin in between, tasting her, taking his time. When he tried to ease her boobs free from the cups without unhooking her bra, his hands fumbling and impatient, she felt everything in that, the want and the not-quite-steadiness, the fact that he was as undone as she was.

"Ankur." Her voice was trembling. "Please. There's no going back from this. I don't know if I can."

He looked up at her. "The moment you want to stop," he said, voice rough, "we stop. I promise you that."

She didn't answer with words. Her arms dropped to her sides and her body went still and open.

He reached behind her for the clasp. It took him a few seconds, fingers not entirely cooperating, the rush in his blood making everything slightly imprecise. The hooks came free. He pulled the straps down her arms.

Priya's arms came up reflexively to cover herself and he took her wrists gently in both hands and moved them away. She let him.

He looked at her. Her boobs bare and full and real in the low light, her nipples already stiffening in the cool air of the room, her chest rising and falling with the kind of breathing that has no pretense left in it.

He lowered his mouth to her left nipple.

"Ahhh. Ankur." The sound came out before she could catch it.
