Chapter 869 - Chapter 870: Yet Another Brace

Chapter 870: Yet Another Brace

Back in the dressing room, José Mourinho gave full credit to the first-half display but stressed that chance conversion still needed sharpening.

At the same time, he noted Bayern Munich's growing impatience.

"This is their home, and even at 1–1 the pressure is on them because we won the first leg," he said. "So keep the first-half approach and stay patient."

Bruno and the team voiced their agreement, clearly aligned with the manager's reading.

The second half began with no changes. Hansi Flick stuck to the original plan but shored up Bayern's left (Pavard's side) to clamp down on Bruno.

Then, in the 51st minute, the match pivoted.

In a fifty–fifty, N'Golo Kanté slid in; Joshua Kimmich arrived late and failed to pull out, stamping into Kanté's inner knee. The Frenchman clutched his leg in pain.

It happened right under the referee's nose—straight red for Kimmich.

Flick was incensed, calling it an unintentional collision and unworthy of red; he argued heatedly with the fourth official, but the decision stood. Kimmich trudged off, gutted—his first career red card.

Flick summoned David Alaba to the touchline and relayed instructions.

...

After the restart, Bruno immediately felt the pressure ease.

Repeated surges from Bruno and Harry Kane, plus Fred's late runs, forced Alaba and Thomas Müller to collapse tighter centrally.

Bruno also noticed assistant coach Miroslav Klose sending Jamal Musiala to warm up—clearly a gamble was coming, though the timing was unclear.

Either way, Kimmich's dismissal changed the tide—and filled Bruno with a jolt of belief: there's a chance!

Bruno's deepest desire was to score—he wanted United to win at the Allianz, a milestone triumph this season.

A hat-trick? Not his focus. It wasn't realistic in his mind; he preferred letting things come rather than chasing the uncontrollable.

...

"United build on the right—Mbappé crosses."

"Kane darts to the near post—low shot trickles wide."

"United still attacking down both flanks, even more proactive since the red card, while Bayern dig in."

"Remember, before tonight, Bayern were unbeaten in 32 straight home matches across all competitions—their last home loss was November 30, 2019, 1–2 to Leverkusen."

"United, a man up, are pushing harder—especially Bruno, who's covering every blade."

...

On 61 minutes, Bayern changed shape: Musiala replaced Alphonso Davies—a bold attacking roll of the dice from Flick.

Mourinho answered quickly, sending on İlkay Gündoğan for the injured Kanté.

Kanté could have carried on, but Mourinho refused to risk it—both to protect his midfielder and to avoid making him a target. With Kanté just past 30 and nursing more knocks lately, prudence prevailed.

...

Time ticked.

Even a man down, Bayern showed structure and pride—backed by that long home unbeaten run.

United's attacks hit a wall repeatedly; the final incision just wasn't there.

Choupo-Moting caught Maguire with an elbow while contesting a high ball; already booked, he escaped with a stern warning.

Soon Bayern wanted parity in leniency—a long ball released Musiala, who slalomed by Luke Shaw and Virgil van Dijk into the box, only to tumble under Maguire's pressure; the referee waved play on. Flick raged on the sideline.

No change to the score, but the intensity stayed high.

Bruno kept weaving and probing, waiting for his opening.

It came in the 69th minute.

Bayern massed at thirty meters; Mbappé's right-side thrust stalled and he recycled to João Cancelo.

The right-back overlapped and glanced up—too crowded to thread a cross.

...

Bruno suddenly checked back centrally and raised a hand.

Cancelo pinged the switch into him.

Bruno chested down and nudged diagonally toward the left.

Pavard pressed tight; Alaba came to help.

They'd doubled up on Bruno and Rashford repeatedly—but this time was different.

Because the ball had come fast from the right, Bayern's block was still shifting; Alaba couldn't close the gap in lockstep with Pavard—a thin seam opened between them.

Bruno had been waiting for precisely that seam. He launched into a diagonal burst.

His first step was electric, angling toward the box; Pavard's stance was slightly left, and Alaba was a stride late. Both reacted—but Bruno slipped through that narrow window with the ball, knifing between them.

The move was so quick Andy Gray barely caught breath.

"Cancelo switches—finds Bruno!"

"Bruno drives… muscles through!"

"Brilliant!"

"He's split the gap—onto the D!"

...

Boateng abandoned Kane and stepped up to block.

As he neared, Bruno slammed on the brakes; a shimmy suggested a cut inside—Boateng bit—then Bruno dragged with his right, and Boateng lunged at air.

"Silky footwork—Bruno sends Boateng the wrong way!"

Bruno hit the box at full tilt.

Neuer had already shifted across to seal the angle, anticipating the thrust from the switch—but Bruno's change of pace was vicious. By the time Neuer set, Bruno was at the six, outside of the keeper's left shoulder, and flicked a right-footed outside-of-the-boot daisy-cutter across him.

Neuer sprang—too late.

Boateng chased to the line and slid, but skidded into the net with the ball.

"GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOALLLLL!"

"It's in!"

"Seventieth minute—United strike again!"

"Bruno—again!"

"A brace! A devastating solo to pierce Bayern a second time!"

...
