The cursed energy around Hakari shifted. It grew thicker, wilder, almost solid in the air. Hakari's signature jagged cursed energy let him deal extra damage with every physical hit he landed.
Ryosuke clocked the change instantly.
Interesting. He's kicking it up a gear.
"Kirara!" Hakari barked without taking his eyes off Ryosuke. "Let's go!"
Kirara nodded, hands raised in front of their face. Star-shaped marks flared to life around them, materializing like invisible constellations weaving an intricate web across the whole clearing.
The space around Ryosuke warped. He felt it—something pressing down on his cursed energy, a constraint. Sparks crackled above his head.
Let's see… Ryosuke glanced at the faint marks flickering across his uniform. If I remember right, their technique's built around the Southern Cross constellation. They tag cursed energy and control distances and trajectories.
Hakari launched forward, speed nearly doubled. His fist shot out like a spear straight at Ryosuke's solar plexus.
Ryosuke blocked with his forearm, but the impact still shoved him back two steps. His heels carved furrows in the soft dirt. A sharp pain shot up his arm.
That cursed energy…
"Ha! You felt that, didn't you?" Hakari's grin widened. "That's my specialty!"
He followed up with a left hook. Ryosuke leaned back to dodge, but Kirara had already read it. The star marks activated.
Suddenly Ryosuke's body jerked left—not from any physical force, but from spatial pressure. The space itself dragged him exactly where they wanted.
Hakari's fist was waiting.
CRACK!
The punch slammed into Ryosuke's side, spinning him across the clearing. He crashed into a tree in a burst of bark and splinters.
"Perfect combo!" Hakari whooped, throwing a triumphant punch into the air. "You see that, Kirara? We're on fire!"
Kirara stayed silent, completely focused on holding the marks. Their star-shaped eyes glowed bright.
Smoke rose from where Ryosuke had hit. Then, slowly, a figure stepped out of the wreckage.
Ryosuke stood up, casually brushing off his uniform. He rolled his shoulder, vertebrae cracking. An amused smile tugged at his lips.
"Not bad." His voice was calm, almost bored. "You two work well together."
Hakari frowned.
Not even a scratch?
"But," Ryosuke continued, taking a step forward, "it's not enough."
He vanished.
No teleportation. No spatial trick. Just raw, brutal speed that Hakari and Kirara couldn't track.
Ryosuke reappeared in front of Hakari, fist already flying. The punch buried into the second-year's gut, lifting him clean off the ground and hurling him across the clearing like a ragdoll.
Kirara reacted instantly, triggering the marks to lock Ryosuke down. But he shattered the spatial bindings with a single burst of cursed energy—so massive, so dense the star marks melted away like ice under a blowtorch.
"Impossible…" Kirara whispered, eyes wide.
Ryosuke turned to them. "Clever technique. You control trajectories, force movement based on the Southern Cross star order." He paused. "But when the raw power gap's this big, constraints don't mean shit."
He stepped toward Kirara. They instinctively backed up, trying to remake the marks, but Ryosuke was already there, hand gently resting on their shoulder.
"Sleep."
A wave of cursed energy rolled through Kirara's body. Not violent—just overwhelming. Like a mountain dropping on them. Their legs buckled and they crumpled, out cold before they hit the ground.
Ryosuke lowered them gently against a tree. "You weren't my real opponent anyway."
"YOU SON OF A—!"
Hakari was back on his feet, blood dripping from his mouth. Cursed energy whipped around him like a visible vortex.
"You're about to see what I'm really made of!"
Ethereal doors started materializing around him—structures of pure cursed energy.
Ryosuke recognized it immediately.
He's deploying his Domain.
"Domain Expansion…"
Cursed energy detonated like a supernova.
"IDLE DEATH GAMBLE!"
The world changed.
The clearing vanished, replaced by a chaotic abstract space full of flashing lights, spinning symbols, and electronic noise. Sliding doors appeared and vanished, pachinko balls rolled along impossible paths.
Ryosuke stood in the center of the organized madness, calmly taking it in.
"Impressive," he admitted. "Complex rules."
Information flooded his mind—pages upon pages of conditions, probabilities, mechanics. The domain forced opponents to drown in complexity.
But Ryosuke absorbed it all in a split second. His memories of the manga let him process the flood instantly; he already knew the core of Hakari's domain.
Exactly like the manga. If he hits the jackpot, he gets unlimited cursed energy for four minutes and eleven seconds. In that state, reverse cursed technique kicks in automatically—he's basically immortal.
Symbols started spinning in front of Hakari. Doors slammed open and shut. Visuals blurred past at insane speed.
"Come on, come on, COME ON!" Hakari screamed, hyped to the max.
DING DING DING!
Three symbols lined up.
JACKPOT.
An explosive song blasted through the domain—"Admiring You"—and Hakari's cursed energy skyrocketed. His aura became blinding.
"HERE WE GOOOOO!"
Hakari charged with renewed fury. His blows came like a storm—fast, heavy, relentless. Every hit amplified by his jagged cursed energy, now limitless.
He nailed Ryosuke in the side. The "wound" healed instantly.
No… Ryosuke realized. He didn't heal. I didn't even scratch him.
The cursed energy flow was too thick, too constant. Like trying to cut a waterfall.
"SEE THAT?!" Hakari roared between punches. "IN THIS STATE, I'M UNKILLABLE!"
Ryosuke caught Hakari's fist mid-swing. The shockwave cracked the illusory ground.
"Unkillable?"
He twisted the arm and slammed Hakari into the floor hard enough to pulverize normal bones. Hakari cratered the ground.
Less than a second later he was back up, fully healed.
"EXACTLY!" His grin was manic. "HIT ME ALL YOU WANT—I'LL JUST GET BACK UP!"
He charged again.
For the next four minutes, Hakari attacked nonstop. Every move in his arsenal—brutal strikes, feints, devastating combos. The domain boosted everything to lethal levels.
Ryosuke handled it all. Sometimes blocking. Sometimes dodging. Sometimes countering just enough to push Hakari back.
And the whole time, his expression stayed neutral. Calm. Almost… bored.
DING!
The music cut out.
The domain collapsed.
Hakari dropped to his knees, gasping. His cursed energy crashed back to normal. Sweat poured down his face, body shaking from exhaustion.
"Fuck…" he panted. "You really are… a monster…"
Ryosuke stood over him—not a scratch, not a drop of sweat. His uniform wasn't even wrinkled.
Even with his domain active, he hasn't hit his full potential yet. Shame…
He crouched to eye level with Hakari, polite smile in place.
Then he started clapping.
Clap. Clap. Clap.
"That was fun," he said genuinely. "Your technique's seriously impressive. Auto-regen, infinite cursed energy in jackpot mode… right now you could probably hang with most Grade 1 sorcerers."
He stood up, hands in his pockets.
"But 'interesting'?" His smile widened a fraction. "Just barely."
Hakari glared up at him.
"Who… the hell are you?"
Ryosuke didn't answer right away. He looked up through the trees, like he was seeing something only he could.
"Someone playing in a completely different league."
He turned to leave, then glanced back over his shoulder.
"You've got real potential, Hakari Kinji. Keep grinding." A cryptic smile. "Maybe one day you'll actually be worth my time."
And with that, Ryosuke vanished into the forest, leaving Hakari and an unconscious Kirara behind.
Hakari stayed on his knees, staring at the spot where Ryosuke had been.
Then, slowly, a grin spread across his face.
"Shit…" He started laughing. "I just found someone I actually want to fight again."
He flopped onto his back, staring at the sky through the leaves.
"Tokyo's losing this goodwill event, huh?"
