Chapter 50 - What if Silo

We were searching for a vehicle and found a family trying to find a safe place. They found us and pointed a gun at our face. I explained that we were going to a safe place. Mom was on the walkie talkie. The old man talked to mom and he tried to confiscate the walkie talkie. I used hypnosis and got it back. Irene and Sonja quietly warned me to turn it off. Since the noise attracts these things. I kept an eye out as I searched for a vehicle. The family decided to tag along. I looked at the gas tank and moved on. The car should be big enough to house us and have enough gas. I found a car and the girls got in and locked the door. It took me a minute to hotwire so I could start it. As the engine roared to life there was a knock on the window. The old man was pointing his gun at me. He ordered us to get out of the car. I grinned as I stepped on the skinny pedal. We drove off. For a second I thought he couldn't fire because it would attract them. He waited till we were a few feet and took a shot. The trunk took the hit but we were fine. I accelerated the car and he couldn't chase after us. I heard screams as we made it out for the garage.

Since the car had a full tank we made it to the prison without a hassle. The guard opened the door to let us in. A doctor was a few feet away. She insisted we got with her to the tent. She checked us for bites and checked our temperature. Then we were hosed before we waited ten minutes. Mom walked out and gave us all hugs. The family of my friends came out and hugged us all too. Then we went to the shower block to get cleaned up. When we got to the cellblock we saw the family had made it. Irene asked him why he open fire on us instead of finding a different car to follow us. Mom and the other adults yelled at him. He had to apologise and he moved away from us. I decided to play explorer and found myself in the basement. A stern faced lady in a lab coat told me to go upstairs. As I went back to the cellblocks I saw zombies were being dragged in. They wore straight jackets and had a muzzle. Shaw had a talk with the doctor and he walked in a different direction. I went straight to the mess hall where we ate our lunch. Mom asked me not to wander off. I explained that I had seen Shaw haul in zombies so I will stay where I won't be harmed. The others stared in horror.

Shaw walked in and gave mom a hug. She gave him the good news. He turned to see me and the first thing he said was, "You should join the army" I retorted, "Hi Sasha. I am glad you're not eaten. You look good. I guess the new meds worked. I missed you and I was worried about you." He stared at me for a moment and I replied, "I am not joining your death cult. So go harass someone else who has no conscience. Besides I have seen the zombies being hauled over and I am not interested in getting bitten." He stared for a moment and asked me to reconsider. I blinked four times and told me that I am interested. He didn't say anything else. Mom told him to leave me alone. He stared as his soldiers gave him the report that their numbers were dwindling. He asked me to sign up. I told him to go lay on egg. The law clearly states will participation. I don't want to end up with PTSD. Mom asked him to go bother someone else. The other parents gave him a piece of their mind. He stared intensely before walking away. He asked me to go the medbay and make sure I am ok. I was about to say something when the alarm went off. I told the girls to get their bags because fun time is over.

Mom and the others got their things too as we quietly got our stuff. We boarded our car and mom joined us. We drove out and the other parents got into their vehicles. They followed us. Mom switched on the military channel and Shaw gave mom directions. I found Batou and stopped the car to let him in. He got and mom checked him for bites as we drove off. Batou was shocked that I can drive without hitting garbage cans. I drove till we reached the edge of the city. There was a convenience store and a gas station. I filled the gas tank and searched the place for anything useful. When I came back mom was hyperventilating. I had walked past a zombie without getting bitten. I casually sat down and explained my condition. She took a few minutes accept reality but Batou had accepted instantly. I gave him a wink and I asked Batou for directions. Left, right or keep going straight. He listened to Shaw's banter and translated. Irene was laughing as she listened to his directions. Finally I found a fenced area. I told mom to take the wheel and she didn't question it. I got in the back and mom happily talked to the soldier. Shaw vouched for us so he hastily let us it.

Once we were in I had to play a game of hide and seek. Shaw was persistent. He kept telling me to join. I made it clear I rather walk out than be a licensed killer. He was not interested what I said. All he wanted was for me to say yes. I didn't give him the satisfaction. He stared intensely before he stormed off. I had the rest of the day to spend surrounded by my friends and a group of strangers. All of them are huddled together. The air smelled like fear. A few were grateful that they were alive. While others were wishing they were home. A few were so traumatised that they kept looking everywhere. They seems to think that the chompers would show up. I made sure to stay as close to my friends as possible. I didn't sleep so I stayed watch like I was a bodyguard. I held on to a baseball bat. It had barb wires wrapped it. I only left their side to use the bathroom. They will come with me to the mess hall. Shaw would watch me from a distance but he didn't do anything. He kept going out for supplies and zombies. The numbers dwindle with each trip but my answer was still no. He would be dejected but still hopeful. I admire his tenacity but like I said. No is no.

I felt everything that happened here. I saw and heard the zombies in cages. I saw and heard what the scientists and soldiers were doing. A scientist was trying to mix chemicals and the blood of zombies. She was frustrated by the harassment of her coworkers. The soldiers were doing a perimeter check, a head count and trying to recruit others. A few said yes but mostly the answer is no all around. I would try to hide since his words like it is my fault. I remind him that he would have more fighters if he didn't go out get fresh specimens. He didn't argue with that. I spent my days in the pitt watching the survivors, soldiers and others. I pretended to sleep so no one will get suspicious. I would turn left and right. Sometimes I pretend to have nightmares. As weeks went by I was getting thirsty. Which is a problem since the blood is kept under lock and key. I only sink my teeth into a blood bag. If I bite my friends then the random body checks would get us all in trouble. I don't know the side effects of my bite. I need to be extra careful. There are cameras everywhere and I don't know how to unlock the doors or how to acquire it.

The place is monitored twenty four seven and I wasn't going to become a pincushion or have more holes than swiss cheese. Occasionally someone would get injured and my inner beast would roar demanding blood. I remind myself that I am not Shaw. Irene realised my problem and she pretended to be sick. She was taken to the medbay where she got a needle and a tube. Somehow she poured her blood into a cup and stopped the bleeding. She gave it to me and I drank it quietly. I quietly viewed all of her life. Once I was done Sonja threw it into the garbage bin in the mess hall. We were playing cards when I heard the first signs of trouble. One of guards had willingly allowed himself to get bitten out pure spite. He had walked over to the holding area and waited for the right moment. He quickly pushed several buttons. He stood over the last one. As though it would unleash them as he fall down. So when he turns he can join them to eat us. The girls quietly got their family. I told mom, "I suspect something fishy is going on so as a cautionary note can we please stay near the exit." Batou asked mom if he could have a word with me. Mom left to have a word with the security.

Batou took me to the bathroom and he asked me to be honest. I checked every stall and locked the door before I told him how I got cured. The side effects and everything. I told him about the bad soldier and how he is trying to override the codes keeping brand new types of chompers in cages. I insist we move out before we are on the menu. I had to prove that I had x-ray vision and also echolocation. I explained what he hid in his pockets. He was grateful that I didn't try to eat anyone. He figured it out after he saw me turn around when someone scrapped their arm. The look of hunger was intense but I kept myself in check till my friend got me a cup full of blood. He explained that he was watching me ever since the zombies left me alone. I told him that I will show him much more but we have to leave this building or we won't be alive. Well he won't be alive. They will ignore me as they keep going but he won't be so lucky. I got on my knees and begged him to save mom. She is all have left. Batou told me to get up and get my friends to be ready to leave. I told him that I am not leaving without him or mom. He grinned, "Don't worry about it"

Batou walked out and I grabbed his wrist. I told him the bad guy had hit the button now those things are coming. He hit the fire alarm and everyone started panicking. Mom found Batou and we dragged her out along with my friends. The soldier refused to let us leave until I hypnotized him. He opened the door and told us where to find a zombie proof vehicles were. I ignored him as we got into regular cars and drove off. Mom was not happy but I didn't care. We drove till we ran out of gas. I apologised to Batou and tried to leave. He didn't let me. He made sure mom wasn't looking and he asked me to change into hybrid mode. I did and I mentally linked with him. We had full on conversations. I sensed around and realised that someone was coming. I changed back and we went to find the newer ones had found us. Mom was doing her best to kill them. I asked for a machete and I used superspeed to kill them all. Then I gave it back before asking if we were heading for the convoy we heard on the radio or the train everyone keeps talking about that takes people to an infection free zone. Mom told me we were heading towards the convoy since she knows it exists. The train could be a myth. We can't lose anymore people. One of the adults asked how the zombies were all killed so swiftly. The other said it could be one of the supernatural ones. Batou found the convoy and we walked there.
