I wiped my tears ferociously as the elevator went down.
I didn't wipe them gently. I dragged the sleeve of my coat across my face, then my palm, then the back of my hand. I was trying to regroup my composure before those doors opened, trying to pull myself back into a person who looked like he had his life together. My face was hot and tight, my eyes were burning from crying, and my nose was running. I kept swallowing, trying to make the lump in my throat go away.
My chest was caving in.
