The blizzard found us halfway there.
For the first two hours the flight had been smooth, quiet. Just the low, even hum of the jet engines and the flight attendant moving silently in her soft shoes. I had my forehead pressed to the cold oval window the whole time, watching the clouds below us turn from white to grey to a bruised purple. My tracksuit was too warm inside the heated cabin, but I didn't take it off. I curled my legs up under me on the big leather seat and held a bottle of water I hadn't opened.
Then the captain's voice came over the speaker, calm but tight. "Mr. Yuri, we are entering heavy turbulence. Please fasten your seatbelt. We are descending into a snow front. Landing will be rough."
The jet dropped.
My stomach dropped with it. My hand flew automatically to my stomach, to the small swell under the soft grey fabric. The water bottle rolled off the table and onto the carpet. The lights flickered.
