I didn't want to wake up.
That was the first thing I felt. That heavy, warm, delicious kind of tiredness that sits behind your eyes when you stay up too late and laugh too much. My bed felt too good. The sheets were cool, but the air in my room was already warm even though the sun had barely come up. My fan was turning slowly above me, making that little clicking noise it always made. Outside my window, I could already hear the ocean and a moto passing in the distance.
We had gone to sleep so late.
For some reason last night, no one in the house could fall asleep. It was supposed to be an early night because everyone knew today was my birthday. But after dinner, my Ma and Aunt Carmen suddenly looked at each other and decided they were going to make habichuelas con dulce.
